They move up to London where they meet their only relative the antagonist Ralph Nickleby and Nicholas finds a job with the horrific Wackford Squeers who runs the Dotheboys Hall in Yorkshire. Like much of Dickens' work the novel has a tone of ironic social satire. It was originally published in monthly parts. The cruelty of the character Wackford Squeers was inspired by a real schoolmaster names William Shaw who worked in Yorkshire.'Nicholas Nickleby' was Dickens' third published novel after 'The Pickwick Papers' and 'Oliver Twist' and cemented his reputation as one of the greatest writers of the Victorian age. In a lovely example of the publisher's full purple morocco deluxe binding. All edges gilt yellow-coated end papers. In Near Fine unrestored condition with just light to moderate foxing throughout but generally an exceptional survivor. <br /> <br /> One of Dickens' finest novels the action in Bleak House revolves around a never-ending set of related Chancery Court cases to resolve the inheritance of a considerable estate. Dickens turns his pen to a biting condemnation of the system and the need for reform which shouldn't surprise the Dickens scholar. A complex novel and filled with subplots it engages and titillates the reader from start to finish. Noted by some for Inspector Bucket's prominent role in investigating a murder which earned it a spot on the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list of detective fiction the novel is also memorable for its complex representation of femininity: "There's more to Esther than simple good nature. An excellent and very attractive set Near Fine.<br /> <br /> For this novel Dickens's first in the standard three-volume form Bentley divided the printing task between two firms: Volume I was printed in a twelvemo format by Samuel Bentley; Volume II in octavo format by Whiting; and Volume III preliminaries and signatures A-F and probably G by Whiting with the remaining text by Samuel Bentley again in twelvemo format. The three-decker publication date was 9 November 1839 and within a week at Dickens's insistence the title-pages were changed to include his name and the "Church" version of the final plate was substituted for the "Fireside" version.<br /> <br /> Oliver Twist Dickens' second novel is a dark and biting work but one that is balanced with Oliver's indefatigable innocence and charm. Often cited as the first Victorian novel to feature a child protagonist it was developed as a social commentary and a call for improving the conditions of London's destitute and orphan children. In recent scholarship critics have noted that Dickens also sought to find balance as many of his contemporaries did between Darwin's theories about human nature and those from the Christian tradition; as the characters make their way through a seemingly uncaring world they are ultimately drawn back to reward or retribution based on their individual level of goodness. The story was immensely successful both as a novel filled with memorable characters and also as a work prompting much needed reform. The third edition of this charming ballad collaboration between Charles Dickens and George Cruikshank complete with the latter's amusing cartoons. The third edition. Illustrated with eleven plates. In other copies one of the plates is bound as the frontispiece however in this copy the plates are bound throughout the text. Collated complete. A charming poem by Charles Dickens the last of his collaborations with George Cruikshank. This poem began life when Cruikshank overheard a cockney version of the traditional ballad outside a public house subsequently repeating it to Dickens who revamped it into this version here. The authorship of this poem has seen a lot of debate with people believing that William Makepeace Thackeray was the author and that Dickens provided the notes and preface however it seems that Cruikshank told people that Dickens wrote the ballad for him.Illustrations by George Cruikshank the well known caricaturist. Bound the publisher's original cloth boards rebacked on full green morocco. Externally very good with rubbing to the joints and extremities. 'Lot 97' label to front board.
