Page 179 in volume II with a closed tear in text but with no loss. Overall a very good copy with clean text.<br> <br> "Master Humphrey's Clock was originally published in 88 weekly numbers beginning with No. 1 on April 4 1840 and ending with Nos. 87 and 88 separately on November 27 1841. Every fourth or fifth week the textual portion of the weekly numbers was collected into a single monthly part and distributed in that form. There are 20 monthly parts April 1840-November 1841 8 of which consist of 5 weekly numbers each and 12 of 4 weekly numbers each. After the monthly parts Master Humphrey's Clock were issued in three volumes. The first volume of Master Humphrey's Clock was published on October 15 1840; the second April 12/15 1841 and the third December 15 1841." Engraved frontispiece portrait in volume I and twelve engraved plates by George Cruikshank. The frontispiece to each volume hand-colored volume I. "Joseph Grimaldi" & Volume II. "Grimaldi's kindness to the Giant". Extra illustrated by the insertion of forty-eight engraved plates eighteen of which are hand colored. Six of the hand colored plates are by F.W. Pailthorpe; six by Isaac Cruikshank and two by George Cruikshank--all three of these artists are famous Dickens illustrators. Bound ca. 1920 by Bayntun stamp-signed in gilt "Bayntun. Binder. Bath. Eng." on rear silk endleaves. Bound in full forest green crushed levant morocco covers triple-ruled in gilt surrounding a thin inlaid border of black morocco. Spines with five raised bands decoratively bordered in black and gilt in compartments gilt lettering gilt board edges and decorative gilt turn-ins. Front and back doublures of each volume with a superb figure and background inlaid in various colored morocco's. The four inlaid designs include "Gaby Grin The Eccentric Clown" and three other characters from the book. Green watered silk endleaves all edges gilt. Spines very slightly darkened otherwise very fine. Housed in the original fleece-lined green cloth slipcase. A spectacular example of a pair of early Bayntun bindings typical of the firm's first-rate work and use of the best materials. <br /> <br /> Joseph Grimaldi 1779-1837 was considered "the most celebrated of English clowns" famous for his pantomime skills Britannica. Purportedly an autobiography edited by Dickens scholars have debated the extent of his authorial role: Forster claims he wrote the introductory chapter Eckel says the last and Bentley argues a significant portion of the book. It is for a discerning reader to parse Grimaldi from Dickens nevertheless it makes for an entertaining read.<br /> <br /> George Bayntun 1873-1940 was the founder of Bayntun Bindery. Trained by apprenticeship with the Taylor family Bayntun opened his own book bindery in 1894 dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. The Bath-based firm acquired the Rivière Bindery also based in Bath in 1939 transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery" which is still in existence and family owned. <br /> <br /> <br /> Gimbel B64. First edition in book form first issue following all points in Smith including vignette on title-page with amount on sign post transposed to read "100£" and seven studs in the trunk. Plates facing pp. 387 and 386 transposed as per Michael Sadleir's copy at UCLA and all of the other thirty-four first issue points. According to Smith "An earlier 13-line errata leaf exists with the same data that is found on the 14-line leaf; the setting was changed to 14-lines for a better balance." Octavo 8 11/16 x 5 7/16 inches; 220 x 139 mm. xiv errata with 14 lines verso blank 624 pp. Forty etched plates including frontispiece and title-page vignette by Hablot K. Browne aka "Phiz." The text-block has been expertly re-cased using the original yellow-coated end-papers. The plates have light to moderate foxing which is mainly confined to the blank margins. There is a 3/8 inch diameter stain on the margin of the plate facing page 160 and a light marginal stain on the facing leaves. Closed tear on margin of O2 pp. 195/6 corner 3/8 x 1/2 inch torn away from FF4. Light foxing to end-papers and first and last leaves only. The text block remarkably clean and fresh. Publisher's primary binding of moderate blue diagonally-ribbed cloth. Covers stamped in blind spine stamped in blind and lettered in gilt with "London 1844" at foot. Original pale yellow coated endpapers. Armorial book-plate of "Sherwin" on front paste-down and ink signature of "J.Sherwin Sherwin" on half-title. The original cloth is near fine with no fading and just the bare minimum of strengthening at the spine ends and slight wear to the lower corners. The gilt lettering is bright and fresh. Housed in an early fleece-lined green cloth clamshell case. <br /> <br /> Charles Dickens's sixth book considered his last picaresque novel The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit is a study in man's financial greed. Although Dickens wrote of his fondness for the project it was the least commercial successful of his published works resulting in a story alteration that sent his title character to America in an attempt to boost sales. It first appeared serially in 19th monthly parts released between January 1843 - July 1844 with the book version being published upon its conclusion. Martin Chuzzlewit is listed as number five in Michael Sadleir's list of Charles Dickens comparative scarcities. Chapman and Hall unknown

First issue with the 'eight-line errata' following all but a very few of the points in Smith in book form of Dickens' seventh novel bound from the original monthly parts with stab-holes present in the inner margins of gatherings. Octavo 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 138 mm. xvi 1 errata 1 blank 624 pp. Engraved frontispiece titlepage and thirty-eight plates after Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" including the 'dark' plate "On the Dark Road" facing p. 547. Some of the plates with light foxing mainly marginal otherwise a very clean and partially uncut example. Publisher's 'primary' binding of moderate olive-green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three-line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. The frame contains an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design that runs along its inner edge; each segment of the chain encloses a four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple. The spine is lettered in gilt and stamped in blind with a thick band at its top and bottom and four rectangular panels. Original pale orange-yellow coated endpapers. With nearly all of the 'internal flaws' mentioned by Smith uncorrected. Front joint head and tail of spine and inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired spine slightly faded. An excellent example far better than is usually seen of this now hard to find Dickens novel in the original cloth. <br /> <br /> Dombey and Son tackles a number of key themes that appear throughout Dickens' authorial career-concerns about family duty class position child welfare and the dangers of arranged marriages in particular. As the titular Dombey builds his shipping company he fantasizes that his son will someday take over the business and continue his legacy. But England is changing rapidly due to the effects of industrialization and its effects ripple throughout Victorian culture. One symbol of industrialization's promise and its perils is the railroad. In chapter six Dickens calls the railroad's impact a "great earthquake." Dombey and Son grapples with the effects of industrialization and the railroad is one of the novel's symbols for this momentous era. The book first "appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts the last forming a double number from October 1846 - April 1848. It was published in book form on April 12 1848. at 21s. Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called dark plate which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road" p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process" Smith.<br /> <br /> Smith I:8. Covers triple-ruled in gilt front cover with an elaborate central gilt floral and thistle design surrounding a fine hand-painted portrait miniature 2 3/4 x 2 inches; 70 x 51 mm. of a young Charles Dickens set under glass. Spine with five raised bands elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Decorative gilt board-edges wide elaborate gilt turn-ins marbled liners and endleaves all edges gilt. Housed in the original felt-lined red cloth slipcase spine with two black morocco labels lettered in gilt.<br /> <br /> "This collection of short pieces contains the earliest of Dickens's work. It is undoubtedly the most valuable from the antiquarian's point of view containing references and descriptions of life in the 30's to be found nowhere else" Hayward. Sketches by Boz contains stories and vignettes about daily life in London that Dickens first published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836. The book is divided into four sections: "Our Parish" "Scenes" "Characters" and "Tales." A classic example of Dickensian observation. A total of forty plates were drawn and etched by George Cruikshank for this octavo edition of which twenty-seven are the original designs as they appeared in the First and Second Series of the Sketches published in volume form 1836-37; these however were enlarged in size to match an additional thirteen etchings. "When Chapman and Hall obtained the copyright of Sketches in 1837 they published all of them in twenty monthly parts from November 1837 through June 1839. Cruikshank designed a cover enlarged the plates except 'The Free and Easy' which was discarded and created 13 new illustrations for these monthly parts. In may 1839 Chapman and Hall published these parts complete in one volume with all 40 of Cruikshank's illustrations" Smith.<br /> <br /> George Bayntun 1873-1940 was the founder of Bayntun Bindery 1894 dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" Princeton. Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939 transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery" which is still in existence and family owned. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway 1742-1821 the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie 1849-1940. Gilt ruled board edges decorative turn-ins marbled end-papers top edge gilt. Joints a little rubbed but quite sound. A very attractive example housed together in a felt-lined fitted marbled board slipcase.<br /> <br /> The Mystery of Edwin Drood was Dickens's final work left unfinished at the time of his death. "When Dickens died on June 9 1870 he had completed only enough of his manuscript to make up six instalments leaving unfinished a work which had commanded the widest attention for its opening numbers and which promised to be one of his most effective and popular books. Although only three parts had been issued prior to his death publication of the work continued and on completion with Part 6 of all available material the vast army of readers was left high and dry as to 'The Mystery.' The Author during the writing of the story never disclosed the ultimate development of his plot" Hatton and Cleaver. The plates and text quite clean and relatively free from the usual foxing. An excellent set of the scarce first issue from the library of the celebrated collector and bibliographer Eric Quayle. Housed in an early twentieth century olive green morocco over green cloth board slipcase with central divider. A unique copy. <br /> <br /> With Amy Dorrit as his case study Dickens reveals how a parents' financial shortcomings can detrimentally affect their daughters' lives -- forcing women into unsafe or unsavory employment and preventing them from finding husbands or forming families of their own. And he suggests that only through goodness and self sacrifice can women rise up from these conditions. "On any other terms than those of allegory angelic Amy Dorrit would be squirmingly hard to swallow. As it is her goodness is indispensable to the story. Born in the Marshals debtor's prison she is the only character whose wishes are wholly unselfish and whose unbreakable will to love and be loved frees her metaphorically from every prison literal and social. All the other major characters are imprisoned by discontent by poverty by ignorance by personal ambition even by ill-judged kindness; but most conspicuously by an insatiable desire for money power and status" Stevenson. It was published in book form on May 30 1857" Smith.<br /> <br /> Helen Riviere Haywood 1908-1995 was an English painter children's book illustrator and writer best known for her foredge paintings. She came from a book-binding family: Haywood was the granddaughter Robert Riviere founder of the great bindery which executed this lovely binding and her uncle who also worked for the firm introduced her to foredge and double foredge painting. Between the 1930s-1970s she completed multiple commissions for Inman's Books a New York City based antiquarian book dealer. From her intertest in science anthropology and naturalism Haywood developed a keen attention to the world's natural elements; this talent for observation and specificity found its way into her artwork. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" Princeton.
