The printed title-page is the original Bradbury and Evans 1850 first edition title-page as are the sheets and plates. The only distinguishing factor is the inserted engraved title-page. All internal flaws of the first edition per Smith show in this copy with the exception of replacement "screwed" on page 132 but this first issue point is only present in the very earliest copies. Octavo 8 5/8 x 5 5/8 inches; 218 x 140 mm. xiv 1 errata 1 blank 624 pp. Complete with forty etched plates by Phiz including the frontispiece the vignette title-page and the dark plate "The River."<br> <br> Original publisher's variant binding of green fine-diaper with the blind stamping on the boards matching that of the primary binding of Dombey and Sons. Newer peach endpapers. Edges uncut. Spine lettered in gilt. Spine slightly sunned. Small professional repairs to joints and top and bottom of the spine. Corners lightly bumped. A few spots to cloth. Previous owner's bookplate and small bookseller sticker on front pastedown. Some minor foxing and toning. This is an exceptional example of one of the significant Dickens octavo novels in original publisher's cloth. Housed in a quarter brown cloth over orange paper clamshell.<br> <br> The binding on this copy has different blindstamping on the covers and spine: a wider ornamental frame is present on the covers around a blank center without the globe-shaped design; the spine has no ornaments just simple panels. Royal octavo 3 volumes bound in full calf by Worsfold gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands all edges gilt marbled endpapers gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles illustrated with wood-engravings after George Cattermole & Hablot K. Browne. In near fine condition bookplates to the front pastedown. Master Humphrey's Clock originally appeared in the form of a weekly periodical published between April of 1840 and December of 1841. Entirely written and edited by Dickens the magazine included both short stories and two novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Many of the short stories acted as frame stories to the novels and although Dickens' original artistic intent was to keep the short stories and the novels together he himself cancelled Master Humphrey's Clock before 1848 and described in a preface to The Old Curiosity Shop that he wished the story to not be tied down to the miscellany it began within. Most later anthologies published the short stories and the novels separately. However the short stories and the novels were published in 1840 in three bound volumes under the title Master Humphrey's Clock which retains the full and correct ordering of texts as they originally appeared. In very good condition bookplates to the front pastedown. The three-volume anthology originated by Dickens to benefit the widow and children of 28-year-old publisher John Macrone. In 1838 Dickens began soliciting submissions and wrote the Introduction rewrote his un-acted farce The Lamplighter altering the name to The Lamplighter's Story and edited the first two volumes. DIckens raised 450 pounds from this charitable publication for Macrone's widow. Other contributors included William Harrison Ainsworth Thomas Moore Leitch Ritchie and Agnes Strickland. In very good condition with splitting to the hinge of the spine on the front panel toning throughout. Bookseller's tickets to the front and rear pastedown. The last of Dickens’ picaresque novels The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit was originally serialized between 1843 and 1844. Dickens thought it to be his best work and William Boyd proclaimed it "Dickens' funniest novel." Like nearly all of Dickens's novels Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were lower than those of previous works so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to the United States. He satirized the country as a place filled with self-promoting hucksters eager to sell land sight unseen.
