The first book form edition of Charles Dickens's 'Master Humphrey's Clock' complete in three volumes. From the time of the first issue until the end of 'Barnaby Rudge' this was published in four different forms: in eighty-eight weekly parts; in twenty monthly parts; in three volumes; and the issue in separately bound volumes of two stories. This is the first edition in three volumes. No half titles as called for. With illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne frontispieces and further vignette illustrations in text. Of the four issues the weekly one is rarest while the three-volume edition such as the present and the single volumes are fairly common.Collated bound without dedication to Samuel Rogers Esq. Otherwise complete. Issue points from Eckel's bibliography of Charles Dickens.Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from 1840 to 1841. It begins with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories are included followed by the novels 'The Old Curiosity Shop' and 'Barnaby Rudge' that were later published as separate works. Bound in uniform half calf over marbled boards with marbled endpapers and edges diced calf to spine titles in gilt to morocco spine label. Externally smart with light shelf wear bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities boards lightly rubbed. Internally firmly bound. In it he satirises society with the plot following a young man who recently came into a fortune after his father dies who's body is then found in the Thames. A mixed issue copy of this work as is common but with a significant number of first issue points.Including the scarce two suppressed Buss plates facing pages 69 and 74.Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and forty-one plates by Buss Phiz - who is known for illustrating many of Dickens' works - and Robert Seymour who died whilst illustrating the work. Binding a touch faded otherwise externally exceptionally clean and bright. Inscription to verso of a front blank. Internally firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned with spotting to perimeters and with significant spotting and discolouration to plates as is common. Trimmed a little close to fore edge but without any loss to text. The first edition first issue of this work being bound from the parts with puncture marks present to the gutter. With 'William' for 'Frederick on page 317 line 27 B2 instead of BB2 on page 371 and 'Rigaud' for 'Blandois' on pages 469-73. Issue points as stated by John C. Eckel in his 1913 publication 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens'.Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and thirty-eight plates. Collated all plates are present including the dark plates.Bound without half-title.'Little Dorrit' follows Amy Dorrit who was born and raised in the Marshalsea debtors prison. It was originally published in monthly instalments over nineteen months and this is the first edition published in a complete book.Charles Dickens is possibly the most well-known Victorian author with his fifteen novels still being widely read and performed as well as being studied in school and enjoyed by people of all ages.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne most often known by his penname 'Phiz'. As Phiz he illustrated many of Dickens' novels including 'David Copperfield' 'Dombey and Son' and 'Bleak House' as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life.
