‎Master Humphrey's Clock‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1840 and 1841. First Editions. This complete set of three volumes are all in very good conditions and bound in their original ribbed brown cloth blind stamped bindings with gilt text and elaborate gilt designs on the spine and with a gilt decorations on each of the front boards in the form of clocks with the hands on each volume pointing to the appropriate volume number. Each volume is a small quarto of 10 1/8 by 6 1/2 inches with light rubbing to the cloth and the heads and heels of the spines and with the cloth worn through on the tips of the boards. Volume II has a small 1/8 by a 1 inch long chip to the cloth at the rear edge of the spine in the title block which barely impacts on the gilt title. The title pages for each volume show a small oval 1.5 inch wide auctioneer's stamp to the right of the author's name. Save for a few printer's ink stains in the margins and minor foxing to the preliminaries the contents are quite clean and free of much tanning or foxing. The hinges and joints remain tight and storng. None of the three volumes are in dust jackets and presumably as issued. Volume I contains 306 pages of text and is illustrated with a frontispiece and vignettes throughout from wood engravings by George Cattermiole and Hablot Browne "Phiz". Volume II is dated 1841 as called for and contains 306 pages and is illustrated as above. Volume III is also dated 1841 and contains 426 pages and is illustrated as above. ‎Vie et aventures de Nicolas Nickleby‎

‎Paris: Chez L. Hachette et Cie 1857. Fine. Chez L. Hachette et Cie Paris 1857 S.d 10.50 x 17.50 cm 2 volumes reliés First French edition translated by P. Lorrain with the authorization and approval of the author contained in Charles Dickens's bilingual preface dated January 17 1857. Contemporary half red shagreen binding. Spine with false flat raised bands decorated with gilt and blind fillets. Gilt titles and volume numbers. Boards rubbed. 4 signatures slightly proud in volume 1. Signature 251 with 2 loose pages in the second volume. Corners bumped. Some foxing. It was in 1856 that Louis Hachette acquired the rights to Charles Dickens's works with P. Lorrain as collection director and translator he would greatly develop the offering of foreign literature in France and notably English literature with Lorrain's help. Many of Dickens's works had indeed not yet been translated into French while they had achieved success in Germany for example. Thus Nicholas Nickleby had not yet received a complete translation although the work dates from 1839. Chez L. Hachette et Cie hardcover‎

‎London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. Fine. Bradbury and Evans London 1848 14 x 22 cm relié First edition rare first issue with the 8 lines of errata on one leaf. The illustration executed according to the author's very precise instructions comprises a frontispiece an engraved title with a vignette and 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne including one in mezzotint: On the dark road. Text on tinted laid paper. Contemporary half red shagreen binding. Raised bands spine decorated. Author and title in gilt. Top edge gilt. Margins of the frontispiece engraved title and engravings browned as is usually the case in English editions of Dickens. Clean text free from foxing. Light rubbing. Handsome copy. A novel written in a distinctly darker vein featuring the excessive pride of a tyrannical father driven by ambition against the unwavering love of his daughter whom he completely ignores. As always with Dickens we find a keen perception of the social tensions of the period. Bradbury and Evans hardcover‎

‎London: John Macrone 1837. Fine. John Macrone London 1837 12 x 19.30 cm 2 volumes reliés Illustrated edition of the first series which had previously appeared in 1836. Rare. Very fine printing on tinted laid paper of great modernity when compared to French printings of the same period. Third edition statement on title page. Preface to the first and second edition. 2 frontispieces and 7 plates on heavy laid paper in each volume by George Cruikshank. John Ruskin declared that after Rembrandt no one had engraved scenes so fine. Although it is noted in manuscript on the endpaper ""First illustrated edition"" this is doubtless an error since the first series in first edition and the second were equally illustrated by Cruikshank. Late 19th-century English bindings in full blonde calf signed July File. Spines with raised bands decorated with gilt compartments. Red morocco title labels red morocco volume labels. Complex shaped frames on boards. Top edge gilt. Brown marbled paper slipcase with tan morocco borders. A few small brown spots on spines otherwise exceptional copy with immaculate paper of perfect freshness which is of very great rarity for Dickens's works notably the engravings. The paper used is different from those habitually used for Dickens's works and resembles a deluxe paper printing thicker. Dickens's first published book most of the sketches appeared previously in different newspapers under the pseudonym Boz. John Macrone hardcover‎

‎CHARLES DICKENS - FIRST EDITION WITH UNIQUE EXTRA SPINE‎

‎Edwin Drood‎

‎Chapman & Hall London 1870 First edition of Dickens' final novel. Octavo contemporary quarter bound calf with hand marbled boards. Five raised bands gilt titles and tooling to the spine with a slight loss to the base. Interesting hinged extra calf flap to the top of the text block to allow the book to be shelved end on. This is titled in gilt too and the author's name mis-spelled 'DICKINS'. Spine title is correctly spelled! It is double gilt ruled raised gilt bands. Brilliant engraved frontispiece portrait of Dickens with tissue guard a superb clean first printing. 12 engraved plates by Luke Fildes also clean first prints. In collectable condition with light rubbing and some toning to the pages. Charles Dickens' novels regularly revolved around masks dual identities and other secrets. The Mystery of Edwin Drood however "enlarged and strengthened such matters in the pursuit of a larger vision a vision which depicts the 'lanes of light' between the dark pillars of a crypt and which reflects upon 'that mysterious fire which lurks in everything" Ackroyd 1056. Unfortunately at the time of his death on June 9 1870 Dickens had written only six parts of the book three of which had been published. The remaining three were published posthumously. Dickens had so closely guarded the plot's outlines even from his closest friends that to this day the identity of Drood's killer remains a topic for speculation discussion and debate. "There are few of Dickens' stories which are superior in the matter of composition. one of the best unfinished mystery stories in literature" - This is a fascinating copy with the hinged extra flap to the text block as a possibly unique detail. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Chapman & Hall London hardcover‎

‎Sketches By Boz.‎

‎1869. Volume 1. New York / Cambridge Hurd and Houghton / Riverside Press 1869. 12 cm x 17 cm. VIII 338 pages. Original hardcover. Very good condition with some clear signs of wear. Contains inscription and plate by pre-owner. Includes for example the following essays: The Beadle. The Parish Engine. The Schoolmaster / The Curate. The Old Lady. The Half-pay Captain / The Election for Beadles / The Ladies' Societies / The Streets - Night / Scotland Yard / Seven Dials / Monmouth Street / Doctors' Commons / London Recreations / Astleys / Vauxhall Gardens by Day / Public Dinners / Brokers' and Marine-Store Shops / Gin Ships / The Pawnbroker's Shop / Criminal Courts / A Visit to Newgate etc. "Published under the pen-name 'Boz' Charles Dickens's first book Sketches by Boz 1836 heralded an exciting new voice in English literature. This richly varied collection of observation fancy and fiction shows the London he knew so intimately at its best and worst - its streets theatres inns pawnshops law courts prisons omnibuses and the river Thames - in honest and visionary descriptions of everyday life and people. Through pen portraits that often anticipate characters from his great novels we see the condemned man in his prison cell garrulous matrons vulgar young clerks and Scrooge-like bachelors while Dickens's powers for social critique are never far from the surface in unflinching depictions of the vast metropolis's forgotten citizens from child workers to prostitutes. A startling mixture of humour and pathos these Sketches reveal London as wonderful terrain for an extraordinary young writer." Amazon hardcover‎

‎OUR MUTUAL FRIEND‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1864-1865. 20 original parts bound in 19 as issued. First Edition. Decorated throughout with illustrations by Marcus Stone and with the great bevy of advertisements as issued and bound into the front and rear of each volume. 8vo publisher's original blue printed wrappers now housed in a fold-over case of brown cloth with black morocco lettering label gilt decorated. A very handsome set the sheets uncut and the text and plates all preserved very well and present. The great number of ads are also in excellent condition and include many not often encountered such as the 'Foreign Bank Notes' ad in Part 19/20; page "13" misprinted "31" in No. 10 and noted by Hatton and Cleaver as appearing in a few copies with the yellow announcement slip for "All the Year Round" in No. 8 with the rare yellow slip "At the Bar" "In Number 335" in No. 18 as well as the yellow Mappin & Webb advertisement the volumes are in original condition and with some expert and essentially invisible refurbishment at the spine panels some very light wear at some edges as is to be expected but a truly fine and lovely set in beautifully preserved condition. FIRST EDITION IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS. With the Mutual Friend advertiser and related matter at the beginning and end of each part and slip explaining the title in Part 1. A great bevy of the advertisements called for by Hatton and Cleaver are present. A fine survival of the original parts issues.
This was the second to last book that Dickens would write and the last one that he would actually finish. The years shortly before the publication of OUR MUTUAL FRIEND were fraught with domestic sorrow that would lead to his eventual decline. He separated from his wife Catherine in 1858 after his admiration for the young actress Ellen Ternan strained his already deteriorating marriage. He further had to defend himself against scandal and protest his innocence when wagging tongues of gossip linked his name to his sister-in-law Georgina’s who had served as his housekeeper for many years. He threw his restless energy into increased productivity and public readings of his work both of which were physically and emotionally exhausting. He suffered from recurrent illnesses during the creation of OUR MUTUAL FRIEND but nonetheless managed to maintain the level of genius in his prose that had pervaded his previous works. He died unexpectedly only five years later while he was writing THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD.
Like most of Dickens’ work OUR MUTUAL FRIEND was published in monthly serial parts the first in May of 1864 and the last in November of 1865 as here.
