Thin 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 71 & 1 pages; Publisher's red cloth gilt lettering on spine and front cover with gilt-stamped floral decorations and rules stamped in blind. Pale grey-green floral patterned endpapers top edges gilt. The plain glassine dust jacket shows only minor toning and while it is impossible to prove that it is original it has clearly been wrapped around this copy for a very long time and is consistent with the nature of this small "gift book." Four full page colour tinted illustrations by Arthur Hogg. The title page does not specify a date; the date of 1908 is determined by a brief review and notice in the November 1908 issue of Bertram Waldron Matz's 'The Dickensian: A Magazine for Dickens Lovers and Monthly Record of the Dickens Fellowship". OCLC: 34981349 with a single copy located only -- Schultz Library Sonoma State University California. Inexplicably the University's Library Catalogue suggests a publishing date of "1850-1870." While the printing firm of William Brendon and Son Ltd. in Plymouth England whose tiny slug appears at the bottom of the final page was in business during that time the style and technical nature of Arthur Hogg's tinted plates are all consistent with the issuing date of 1908 suggested in the 'Dickensian." There Matz's brief review p. 287 cites the London co-publisher Sisley Ltd. and his description certainly remains true after a century -- "daintily produced in a miniature size suitable for slipping into an envelope and consequently a good substitute for sending as a Christmas card to Dickensian friends. The illustrations by Arthur Hogg are very pleasing one has a portrait of Dickens drinking the toast 'On earth peace goodwill towards men.' " The plate appears in our book on page 21. Confirmation of the 1908 date of publication appears on page 307 in this same November issue of 'The Dickensian' -- as the first book on the list of "Dickensiana Month by Month." The British Library is the only location of the British issue in OCLC see OCLC Number: 558209404 which also confirms the 1908 date. The "Seven Poor Travellers" text originally appeared in 1854 in the fifth of the nine Christmas numbers of 'Household Words' the weekly periodical Dickens had founded in 1850. This small 1908 volume contains only the parts actually written by Charles Dickens arranged here as three chapers -- Ch. I. In the old city of Rochester -- ch. II. This work is the second issue of the text with the half-title the corrected "W" in Weller on the vignette title "loud knocking" on page 18 is slightly mutilated signature "E" present on pages 25 and 27 and pagination present for page 26. Solid text block light wear to edges of some leaves faint foxing. Complete with vignette title page frontispiece portrait and 41 illustrated plates by Robert Seymour and H.K. Brown "Phiz". Smith I 3 Hatton & Cleaver 3-88pp A beautiful Cosway-Style binding. The Cosway-style binding originated in London in the early 20th Century created by bookseller and Dickens scholar John Harrison Stonehouse. The style was named after Richard Cosway 1742-1821 the celebrated English miniaturist painter known for his delicate portrait work. Stonehouse commissioned Sangorski & Sutcliffe to create bindings that incorporated miniature watercolor portraits set into the covers under glass. These miniatures-painted on ivory by artists such as Miss C.B. Currie-were often portraits of the book's author a key character or a historical figure related to the text. Each was framed within the leather cover usually of richly gilt morocco and accompanied by elaborate tooling and jeweled ornamentation. The style became a hallmark of Edwardian luxury bookbinding. After the deaths of Sangorski 1912 and later Currie the tradition continued under Sutcliffe and later firms and "Cosway-style" came to denote any binding featuring such inset miniatures even when produced elsewhere. The first envelope is addressed to his brother-in-law Henry Austin at the General Board of Health on Parliament Street. The second is addressed to H. Cholmondeley-Pennell a British naturalist and poet at the Conservative Club in London. Henry Austin was the brother-in-law of Charles Dickens and a close friend. Dickens was a lifelong advocate for the health of nations so he worked closely with Austin to understand the sanitary conditions of major cities of England. Text: engl."Die Bibliotheksausgabe entstand vor allem auf Anregung von Forster der feststellte dass Dickens' Werke zwar in Bänden in der Cheap Edition und in Nachdrucken der Serienteile erhältlich waren es aber keine hochwertige Ausgabe gab die den Wohlhabenden gefallen würde. Dickens kam schließlich auf die Idee dass eine elegante Ausgabe das Ansehen seiner Werke erhöhen könnte. Eine Schwierigkeit bestand darin dass die Rechte an den Werken zwischen Chapman and Hall und Bradbury and Evans aufgeteilt waren. Folglich enthielten die Bände die Aufdrucke beider Verlage. Mit einer Widmung an Forster erschien die Library Edition 1858/9 in 22 Bänden zu 7s 6d pro Band. Zu den Titeln gehörten Pickwick Nickleby Chuzzlewit Old Curiosity Shop Reprinted Pieces Barnaby Rudge Hard Times Sketches by Boz Oliver Twist Dombey Copperfield Pictures from Italy Bleak House Little Dorrit und Christmas Books. Die einzigen Illustrationen waren die Frontispizbilder. Zwischen 1861 und 1874 wurde diese Ausgabe in 30 Bänden neu aufgelegt wobei Tale of Two Cities Great Expectations Our Mutual Friend The Uncommercial Traveller A Child's History of England Christmas Stories und Drood hinzugefügt wurden. Die Neuauflage enthielt die Titelbilder sowie zusätzliche Illustrationen von Künstlern wie Marcus Stone John Leech und Clarkson Stanfield und wurde als Illustrierte Bibliotheksausgabe bekannt. Chapman and Hall erkannten das anhaltende Verkaufspotenzial von Dickens' Werken und veröffentlichten 1873 einen Prospekt für die zweite illustrierte Bibliotheksausgabe die wie sie behaupteten alle Werke enthielt die der Schriftsteller erhalten wollte. Charles Dickens 1812-1870 was an English novelist perhaps most famous for his story A Christmas Carol. This is the second book in his series of five Christmas novellas all with strong moral and social messages often involving the disparity between the poor and rich classes. First published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1845. There was a reading of this new story by Dickens to a select audience of friends on December 2 1844. London: Richard Bentley 1838. First edition first issue. With the 24 engraved plates by George Cruikshank all a little spotted as usual. 3 volumes. Large 12mo and 8vo. with the terminal 2 leaves of advertisements in Vol. I and the initial advertisement leaf in vol. 3 half-titles present in vols 1 and 2 not called for in volume 3 original reddish-brown publisher’s cloth vol. 1 skilfully recased variant state binding with “London/ Bentley†at the foot of the spines according to Smith not a point of any significance spines lettered in gilt arabesque blind-stamps to sides. Spines faded slight chipping to spine ends a little marking to sides but generally a very good copy and unusually in the original cloth.The first issue with the “Boz†title-pages and the final “fireside†plate. After publication Dickens objected to both and the second edition has his name author on the titles and the final plate was substituted by the “Church†plate. The printing was shared between two or maybe three printers hence volumes 1 & 3 are in large 12mo format and volume 2 in 8vo.<br>Oliver Twist first appeared in Bentley’s “Miscellany†from February 1837 to April 1839.<br>In book form it constitutes Dickens’s first novel to be published in the standard three-decker format of the day.<br>Provenance: Vols 2 & 3 have the understated “Sudeley†provenance at the head of the titles.Smith 4; Eckel pp. 51-56 First edition first issue with “Boz†titles and the fireside plate; in original cloth Richard Bentley hardcover

Original prospectus inserted loose.<br>A classic of travel literature Dickens wrote 'Pictures from Italy' at the age of only 32 when he was already famous for some of his greatest work such as Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol.
