‎Premier ouvrage littéraire illustré par la lithographie.Premier tirage des illustrations par le peintre Eugène Delacroix pour accompagner la première traduction française du Faust de Goethe établie par Albert Stapfer.Portrait de Goethe tiré sur chine et 17 lithographies originales hors texte sur vélin de Hollande publiées par l'éditeur Charles Motte avec son nom inscrit au bas des planches. Couverture illustrée par Achille Devéria.Combinaison encore inédite en 1828, le « Faust de Delacroix » est aujourd'hui considéré comme le premier livre d'artiste, dont le modèle quoique peu repris au XIXe siècle, fera florès au siècle suivant.« Entre 1826 et 1827, Delacroix réalise à la demande de l’éditeur parisien Charles Motte, une suite de dix-sept lithographies pour illustrer le Faust de Goethe qui venait d’être traduit en français par Albert Stapfer. (La première planche) montre que son personnage clef est bien Méphistophélès, figure démoniaque, héros romantique par excellence, et situe l’action dans une atmosphère fantastique. Connue de toute l’Europe depuis la fin du XVIe siècle, l’histoire légendaire de Faust -l’homme qui vendit son âme au diable-, acquit un regain de popularité avec la pièce de Goethe, publiée à Tübingen en 1806. En 1823, le jeune Albert Stapfer (1802-1892) en donne la première traduction en français. Deux ans plus tard, Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855) propose une nouvelle traduction plus poétique. Dès 1824, Delacroix confie dans les pages de son Journal son désir de traiter le sujet. Lors de son séjour en Angleterre (mai-août 1825), le peintre est profondément marqué, lors d’une représentation théâtrale sur ce thème, le 24 juin à Londres au théâtre royal de Drury Lane, par l’interprétation tragi-comique du personnage de Méphistophélès donnée par le comédien Daniel Terry. Aussi, est-ce sans doute avec grand intérêt qu’il accepte la proposition de Charles Motte. Paru en 1828, le livre ne remporta malheureusement pas un franc succès. Goethe cependant en loua la qualité de l’imagination : « M. Delacroix a surpassé ma propre vision, combien à plus forte raison, les lecteurs trouveront tout cela vivant et supérieur à ce qu’ils se figurait » (Conversations de Goethe avec Eckermann) » (Arlette Sérullaz pour le Musée Eugène-Delacroix).Très bel exemplaire, grand de marges sur Hollande complet de la couverture illustrée dans une reliure signée. This work is present with half-titles 602 pagesand with bibliographic information to the rear. Henri Delacroix was a French psychologist who found fame in the early twentieth century. He was one of the most famous and prolific psychologists of his time. Delacroix wrote several books and essays on psychology of art and language. Condition: In a quarter morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally excellent with minor shelfwear to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Small hole to the tail of the rear joint. Binder's stamp to the recto of rear endpaper A Schuytjens. Internally firmly bound. Prior owner's inscriptions to the verso of front endpaper and to the contents to the rear.
