‎WONDERFUL TYPED LETTER SIGNED by the American playwright and film director NORMAN KRASNA to Jean Dalrymple regarding an unidentified play he is writing.‎

‎<p>Switzerland July 5th 1976. 1976. Fine. - Over 275 words typed on his personal 11-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide stationery with his Swiss address centered at the top. Norman Krasna writes to Jean Dalrymple about his latest play "Hold the presses." he says having rethought the ending. "I had a long searching session with the muse and also a critique from a friend and the three of us have come to the conclusion that the ending is not right." Feeling that his original ending seemed to imply that the girl settled for marriage "as she hasn't got the ability to be a star". "People don't go to the theatre to accept resignation. I prefer the girl on her way to be a star and have the marriage too." Signed "Norman". An apparent phone number is penned at top left of the letter and another spelled out in French at top right. The letter is further briefly annotated on the verso. The top edge of the page is slightly creased and the letter is folded for mailing. Near fine.</p><p>The American screenwriter playwirth producer and film director Norman Krasna 1909-1984 was known for his screwball comedies based on a case of mistaken identity. He wrote several successful Broadway plays including "Dear Ruth" and "John Loves Mary" and directed 3 films "The Ambassador's Daughter" "The Big Hangover" and "Princess O'Rourke" all of which he also wrote and was nominated 4 times for screenwriting Academy Awards winning once for "Princess O'Rourke".</p><p>The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. Covers and leaves curling edges toned and worn some separation along binding.The film opens with a title card that reads: "It is the stated position of the U.S. Air Force that their safeguards would prevent the occurence sic of such events as are depicted in this film. Furthermore it should be noted that none of the characters portrayed in this film are meant to represent any real persons living or dead.". According to articles in the 9 Feb 1964 LAT and 21 Apr 1963 NYT filmmaker Stanley Kubrick heeded a “pre-conceived interest†in the subject of the atomic bomb and had amassed a large collection of books magazines and newspaper clippings over several years. Although he felt the topic would be well suited for a motion picture Kubrick had no clear ambitions to develop a project until Alastair Buchan the director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in the U.K. recommended the 1958 novel Two Hours of Doom written by former Royal Air Force RAF lieutenant Peter George. The book was published under George’s pen name Peter Bryant and released a year later in the U.S. under the title Red Alert. After purchasing the rights for $3000 Kubrick began adapting the novel with George at his Central Park West apartment in New York City. While the source material provided a serious depiction of what would happen if the U.S. accidentally instigated a nuclear war the director envisioned the scenario as what many contemporary sources referred to as a “nightmare comedy.â€. By 6 May 1962 NYT claimed that the duo had already spent two years working on the script. A 16 Jan 1966 NYT article reported that near the start of production renowned satirist Terry Southern was assigned to write an Esquire magazine article on the film when Kubrick asked him to make some last-minute additions to the finished screenplay. Southern worked with the director from 16 Nov—28 Dec 1962. Although Southern shares a co-screenwriting credit Kubrick maintained that the comedic tone had already been well established before Southern’s involvement and that significant changes were later made by Kubrick George and the actors during filming. A 7 May 1962 DV item revealed the film’s title as Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. The project was intended as the second collaboration between Kubrick; his producing partner James B. Harris; and Seven Arts Productions who worked together on Lolita 1962 see entry. However neither Harris nor Seven Arts receive further mention in contemporary sources beyond 1962 and the 16 Jan 1966 NYT indicated the relationship between Harris and Kubrick “dissolved†as Harris went on to pursue a directing career. Kubrick told the 6 May 1962 NYT that he hoped to bring in the picture for a “reasonable†budget comparable to that of Lolita which cost roughly $1.7 million. Actor Peter Sellers who played “Clare Quilty†in Lolita had agreed to reteam with the director for Dr. Strangelove. According to a 23 Jun 1963 NYT article Kubrick hoped to take advantage of Sellers’s comedic talents and signed him to play four roles including the titular scientist insisting he “wanted all the parts to be played straight and still be funny.†A 10 Oct 1962 DV brief included Mickey Rooney among the cast but he does not appear in the final film. Despite earlier claims that filming was to take place in New York City production was moved to England where Kubrick previously worked on Lolita. According to the 21 Apr 1963 NYT the change was made to accommodate Sellers who was prohibited from leaving the country for “domestic reasons†which a 29 Mar 1964 LAT article identified as the divorce from his first wife Anne Howe. A 29 Jan 1963 DV item stated shooting began that day at Shepperton Studios. The Pentagon “War Room†set was constructed on Stage A and comprised of 13000 feet of black Laconite and a twenty-two-foot table covered in green baize cloth. Scenes featuring the 7090 data processor were shot at International Business Machines IBM headquarters in London. The 20 Mar 1964 LAT stated that aerial footage of the B-52 bomber plane was filmed over the Arctic region including Greenland and Iceland Northwest Canada and the Rocky Mountains using a specially equipped World War II B-17. On 22 Mar 1963 DV reported that production had been temporarily shut down when Sellers and co-star George C. Scott both contracted the flu. A month later the 29 Apr 1963 issue announced that Sellers was forced to relinquish his fourth and final role in the picture—“Major T. J. ‘King’ Kongâ€â€”due to a broken ankle at which point he was replaced by Slim Pickens. A 6 Aug 1963 DV brief indicated that principal photography was nearing completion. According to a 2 May 1963 LAT article Kubrick ordered 3000 custard pies for the production which were used in an alternate end sequence depicting a pie fight between the Russians and Americans. In a 1969 interview published in Joseph Gelmis’s The Film Director as Superstar 1970 Kubrick explained that he removed the ending after a preview screening because the sudden farce was inconsistent with the rest of the movie. Early in the production Kubrick learned that Columbia Pictures had agreed to release Fail Safe 1964 see entry a suspense drama about the inadvertent launching of the atomic bomb. The rival project directed by Sidney Lumet was based on Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler’s 1962 novel Fail-Safe and contained enough similarities to Red Alert that Peter George together with Kubrick’s Hawk Films Ltd. Polaris Productions and Columbia filed a plagiarism lawsuit against Burdick Wheeler and the Fail Safe producers at Entertainment Corporation of America ECA. According to the 12 Feb 1963 DV the comparisons created “unfair competition†and would likely cause “irreparable damages†to the artistic and commercial value of Dr. Strangelove. On 6 Apr 1963 NYT reported that the case was settled but the legal complications led to the collapse of ECA. Fail Safe continued production under Columbia and was released in the fall of 1964—eight months after Dr. Strangelove. According to a 25 Nov 1963 DV item Columbia canceled a 22 Nov 1963 preview screening in New York City following the news of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas TX earlier that day. Due to the tone and subject of the film a 29 Nov 1963 NYT news item announced that Columbia chose to cancel the world premiere in London which was scheduled for the following month. However the 25 Dec 1963 Var and 30 Jan 1964 DV stated that the U.S. debut would not be deferred with simultaneous openings in New York City London and Toronto Canada on 29 Jan 1964 followed by a Los Angeles CA engagement at the Beverly Theatre beginning 19 Feb 1964. Various sources reported that the film broke several house records in London and New York City during its first two weeks of release. Dr. Strangelove was a monumental critical success earning four Academy Award nominations for Best Actor Peter Sellers Writing Screenplay—based on material from another medium Directing and Best Picture; as well as seven British Academy of Film and Television Arts BAFTA Awards of which it won three. It placed third on AFI’s list of the 100 Funniest American Movies of All Time and was ranked 39th on the 2007 100 Years.100 Movies--10th Anniversary Edition list of the greatest American films moving down from the 26th position it held on the 1997 list. Despite some concerns that the cynicism of Kubrick’s satire would damage the image of the U.S. overseas the picture also garnered great international acclaim. The 4 May 1964 DV published a report from the 30 Apr 1964 NYT declaring that Europeans responded well to the “self-criticism†conveyed by the American filmmakers and the political discussions raised by the story which attracted large audiences in Scandinavia Italy and France. Additional songs not included in the onscreen music credits include "Try A Little Tenderness" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." The 23 Oct 1963 Var claimed that Kubrick had hired silent film pianist Arthur Dulay to play an arrangement for the soundtrack but his participation could not be confirmed. Either independently or through his company Kuban produced and directed a number of films. Kuran worked in visual effects for a number of high-budget films including Addams Family Men in Black Robo Cop and Beetle Juice. In 2002 Kuran earned an Academy Award in the area of science and engineering. A neutron bomb officially defined as a type of enhanced radiation weapon ERW is a low-yield thermonuclear weapon designed to maximize lethal neutron radiation in the immediate vicinity of the blast while minimizing the physical power of the blast itself. The conception of neutron bombs is generally credited to Samuel T. Cohen of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory who developed the concept in 1958. Initial development was carried out as part of projects Dove and Starling and an early device was tested underground in early 1962. Designs for a "weaponized" version were developed in 1963. The neutron release generated by a nuclear fusion reaction is intentionally allowed to escape the weapon rather than being absorbed by its other components. The neutron burst which is used as the primary destructive action of the warhead is able to penetrate enemy armor more effectively than a conventional warhead thus making it more lethal as a tactical weapon. ERWs were first operationally deployed for anti-ballistic missiles ABMs. In this role the burst of neutrons would cause nearby warheads to undergo partial fission preventing them from exploding properly. For this to work the ABM would have to explode within approximately 300 feet of its target. The first example of such a system was the W66 used on the Sprint missile used in the US Nike-X system. Samuel Theodore Cohen January 25 1921 – November 28 2010 was an American physicist who is generally credited as the father of the neutron bomb. He was born on January 25 1921 in Brooklyn and raised in New York City. He studied mathematics and physics at University of California Los Angeles before joining the United States Army after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1944 he worked on the Manhattan Project in the efficiency group at Los Alamos and calculated how neutrons behaved in Fat Man the atomic bomb that was later detonated over Nagasaki Japan. After the war he studied for his Ph.D. at Berkeley before dropping out to join the RAND Corporation. At RAND Corporation in 1950 his work on the intensity of fallout radiation first became public when his calculations were included as a special appendix in Samuel Glasstone's book The Effects of Atomic Weapons. Cohen was personally responsible for recruiting the famous strategist Herman Kahn into the RAND Corporation. During the Vietnam War Cohen argued that using small neutron bombs would end the war quickly and save many American lives but politicians were not amenable to his ideas and other scientists ignored the neutron bomb in reviewing the role of nuclear weapons. He was a member of the Los Alamos Tactical Nuclear Weapons Panel in the early 1970s. President Carter delayed development of the neutron bomb in 1978 but during Ronald Reagan's presidency Cohen claims to have convinced Reagan to make 700 neutron bombs 350 shells to go into the 8 inch howitzer and 350 W70 Mod. 3 warheads for the Lance missile. Cohen's neutron bomb is not mentioned in the unclassified manual by Glasstone and Dolan The Effects of Nuclear Weapons 1957–1977 but is included as an "enhanced neutron weapon" in chapter 5 of the declassified formerly secret manual edited by Philip J. Dolan Capabilities of Nuclear Weapons U.S. Department of Defense effects manual DNA-EM-1 updated 1981 U. S. Freedom of Information Act. Copy No. 38 notated in holograph ink on the title page.<br/><br/>An open homage to Homer's "Odyssey" wherein a big game hunter returns home after eight years away only to discover he has been declared legally dead his wife has two suitors and his twelve year-old son is the only one who believes he will return. A little-seen production virtually unrecorded which ran for 47 performances and was followed by an Off-Broadway reopening at the Edison Theatre on December 22 1970. <br/><br/>Vonnegut first wrote "Happy Birthday Wanda June" under the title "Penelope" in the spring of 1952 the same year the author would publish his first novel making it essentially his first work to see the light of day. "Penelope" had an unremarkable debut at the Orleans Arena Theatre in Cape Cod where it closed after one week. In a letter to literary agent Knox Burger just prior to the run Vonnegut described the short stories he was working on as "cruel little bastards . I hate them" and went on to say "I sure do like plays. If 'Penelope' goes over I will have taken the giant step that will free me to write plays for the rest of my life." <br/><br/>Dark purple titled Studio Duplicating Service wrappers with credits for playwright Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Title page present dated 7/17/70 with credits for playwright Kurt Vonnegut Jr. 116 leaves with last page of text numbered 2-5-38. ‎10 May 1958. On letterhead of Dromore Old Frensham Road Farnham Surrey. 2pp 12mo. On aged and creased paper with two torn spike holes resulting in loss of a few letters of text. Date stamp on reverse. The recipient is not named but is presumably the BBC producer Terence Dudley 1919-1988. Writing three months before his death Strong begins the letter: 'My dear Terence How very kind of you! I don't have any dignity in such matters! and I'd love to have a go whether live or recorded. One advantage of the lecture would be that if any line were ineffective I could plug ahead till an adequate version appeared.' In response to an invitation he states that he would 'much like to meet John Bridges'. He explains that he is 'doing a recording on Tuesday at two for R. D. Smith' and that he could 'come in earlier'. Alternatively he has 'a programme on Friday the rehearsal times of which I don't yet know. I'll also be in Town on Thursday: free most of the day.'
