We see his life in a series of flashbacks as it is told to the police by his secretary and fellow con artist Yvonne DeCarlo. Chevallier spent many of his holiday in the village of Vaux-en-Beaujolais the cozy little vineyard town he used as inspiration for the novel. There are museums in Vaux-en-Beaujolais featuring Chevallier's personal archives theatrical rides with characters from the novel and even a urinal with fantastic panoramic views.
