The Criterion Collection 1966. DVD Movie. Fine copy/fine. Three disc set two of which include various documentary features. The original film has been brilliantly restored. 121 minutes. Black & white. In French and Arabic with English subtitles. This remarkable film is of interest in so many ways. It concerns the uprising in the Algiers Casbah led by a small group of inspired rebels. Their antagonist a French colonel is just as inspired but in a different way. The main protagonist is Yacef Saadi one of the rebel leaders. It was he who conceived the idea of having young European-looking women place bombs in public cafés. Eventually he was captured and condemned to death but later pardoned and freed after Algeria achieved its independence from France. The real Yacef Saadi plays himself in this film after becoming its producer in 1966. However the story in the movie has been bowdlerised and is only partly true. The character of the sardonic Colonel Mathieu is fictional. It was based on Colonel Bigeard one of the Para commanders who won the Battle of Algiers twice but who helped lose the war. A more serious flaw though is that it was Yacef Saadi himself not a tortured informant who revealed the hiding place of Ali-la-Pointe. Still this film has been incredibly influential and retains its impact. The Criterion Collection

The hoods are brought into line by the well-meaning Sargeant Holmes Jack Carr who educates them about the glories of the U.S. Army by showing them a film on military heroism. The film also involves a murder-mystery sub-plot involving 2 members of the gang one of which is unjustly incarcerated for a murder he did not commit. Original one-sheet poster lithographed in colors on white stock measuring 41" x 27". Hollywood: RKO Radio Pictures 1947. Final Script for the 1947 film. Based on the 1937 Finnish play "Juurakon Hulda" by Hella Wuolijoki under the pen name Juhani Tervapaa. A feelgood rags-to-riches story in which Loretta Young plays a farm girl who is robbed on her way to the big city and who after working as a maid in the household of a US Representative finds herself elected a US Representative herself as well. While originally intended as a vehicle for actress Ingrid Bergman Young was given the leading role after rumors circulated that Joseph Cotten was having an affair with Bergman. Young won an Academy Award for Best Actress for the part exclaiming "at long last!" as she received it. "The Farmer's Daughter" was nominated for one other Academy Award as well. Pink titled wrappers noted as Final Script on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 24 dated April 15 1947 with credits for screenwriters Rivkin and Kerr. Based on the short story "Private Pettigrew's Girl" by Dana Burnet and published in "The Saturday Evening Post" on September 14 1918. Copy belonging to an unknown crew member with holograph pencil annotations throughout. Jimmy Stewart plays an idealistic soldier who convinces a Broadway star Margaret Sullavan to pretend they're dating in order to impress his other soldier friends. Meanwhile Sullivan's manager Walter Pidgeon has always been in love with her and objects to the pair's closeness even as they decide to get married before Stewart is shipped out to France. Stewart and Sullivan pull off surprisingly believable roles for a plot of such sickly sweetness in this their second on-screen pairing. The third film based on Burnet's "Saturday Evening Post" story the first two being the 1919 George Melford silent film "Pettigrew's Girl" and Richard Wallace's part-talkie "The Shopworn Angel" 1928 starring Gary Cooper. Set in New York. Goldenrod titled wrappers rubber-stamped copy No. 2268 and production No. 25077 dated 3/16/38 with credits for producer Joseph L. Mankiewicz and screenwriter Waldo Salt.
