Based on the 1914 Russian play by Leonid Andreyev first published in English in 1922. The first film put into production under the newly formed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and the first to feature Leo the Lion although it was not the first film released by the studio. The second film directed by Sjostrom known as "the father of Swedish cinema" after his move to Hollywood at the behest of Louis B. Shot on location along the North Devon coastline specifically Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows. Producer Jeremy Thomas later noted: "Because I had a great director and a quality piece of literature I managed to get a wonderful cast such as John Hurt and Alan Bates. Skolimowski had a sense of shooting style then this was the second director who I had worked closely with and it was fascinating watching him work. He came from a Polish tradition the Wajda Film School he had a different background to other directors I had been working with in the cutting rooms or elsewhere. And it made the film much more creative to me. I saw it more as an artistic endeavour by him." Beige titled die-cut wrappers in the British style. Since the establishment of Indian and other federal reservations two separate systems of water rights have emerged in the water-scarce West. These two systems one federal and the other state have resulted in water rights disputes leading to lengthy and expensive litigation. This manual the result of a comprehensive study by the Conference of Western Attorneys General attempts to make it easier to achieve negotiated settlements as an alternative to litigation. The Reserved Water Rights Settlement Manual begins by outlining the history of these two systems. The federal system of reserved water rights was created by the courts to protect water rights on federal reservations. Conflicts develop because federal reserved water rights do not depend on continuous use and it is not clear how much water is reserved for each reservation until the courts clarify the scope of the right. Under the state system however water is quantified based on continuous use; state rights can be affected if all federal reserved rights are put to actual use. The study compiles recent experience in settlement efforts between tribal state and federal governments. It provides each party with the information they should have in an effort to assist the settlement process. Los Angeles: Eagle Associates / Orion Pictures 1983. Third Draft script and Final Shooting script for the 1983 film "Gorky Park" based on the 1981 novel by Martin Cruz Smith. Actor Lee Marvin's leather-bound presentation copy from director Michael Apted and producer Howard W. Koch Jr. bound in maroon leather with Marvin's name in gilt at the bottom right corner of the front board and with two notable pieces of associated ephemera: a a Typed Letter Signed from Apted Koch and producer Gene Kirkwood on production stationery for the film reading "Dear Lee / Please accept this gift as a momento sic of the time we all spent together on GORKY PARK" and b an attractive greeting card from Apted and Koch with a note in holograph ink referring to the shooting location for the film which reads "Welcome to Moscow! We're glad you're here! / Best / Howard and Michael." On the rear of the envelope is a holograph pencil notation in Marvin's hand reading "From Howard Koch upon arrival in Finland." And accordingly the shooting location for the film was Finland not Moscow as "Glasnost" had not yet taken effect. In the film a very faithful rendering of Cruz-Smith's Cold War novel Marvin plays a Armand Hammer-style American businessman who is playing hell with Soviet police inspector William Hurt in a mystery that is not so much a "whodunit" as a "whydunit." An underrated and appropriately bleak entry in the Cold War cinema genre by the versatile director Apted. Maroon leather with gilt titles and rule with matching glossy endpapers. Title page present with credits for screenwriter Potter and novelist Cruz-Smith. 133 leaves Xerographically duplicated. Pages and binding about Fine. From the estate of Lee Marvin.
