The hero of this political thriller is a deserter from the conflict in Algeria who is living in Geneva where he becomes involved with French agents. He has no deep commitments however and is much more interested in a young woman he meets. But the real story is the film itself. Godard became fascinated with his starring actress and a romance began on the set which led to marriage a year later. Her chose her for a number of films to follow most notably "Pierrot le fou" in 1965. Also the film was controversial at the time because the hero is tortured onscreen. The French Government refused to release it. Eventually the war in Algeria came to an end and the political situation changed whereupon it was finally seen in France.
