Original flyer for the 1929 play "Journey's End" which premiered at Henry Miller's Theatre on Broadway on March 22 1929 and closed on May 17 1930 for a total of 485 performances. <br/><br/>The first US production of the play after its smash hit at at the Apollo Theatre in London which starred a young Laurence Olivier and was directed by then-unknown director James Whale. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest plays ever written about World War I following the plight of a British Army infantry company in 1918. <br/><br/>Whale accompanied the play to America for the production advertised here which by late 1929 was being performed by 14 companies in English and 17 in other languages and he would go on to direct the 1930 film adaptation starring Colin Clive David Manners and Ian Maclaren. His film would be the first of numerous adaptations including: "The Other Side" 1931 "Aces High" 1976 and "Journey's End" 2017. <br/><br/>Whale would go on to even greater Hollywood fame later directing "Frankenstein" "The Invisible Man" "The Bride of Frankenstein" and more and was one of the first openly gay directors.<br/><br/>Two-color single leaf folded once 10 x 8 inches. In 1919 soldiers of the short-lived Hungarian Red Army are now on the run from relentless secret policemen and patrol units of the nationalist Royal Gendarme. If caught they are executed without mercy or proper trial. Ex-soldier Istvan Cserzi has fled to the Great Hungarian Plains and has taken refuge on a farm run by two sympathetic women. With the help of the women and a former childhood friend now a commandant of the local Royal Gendarme outfit Istvan is safely hidden from the prying eyes of the secret police. Budapest: Mafilm 1967. Vintage Hungarian program for the 1967 film. Photo-illustrated with scenes from the film including one large image on the entirety of the verso. Text in Hungarian. One of the masterpieces of Hungarian cinema. A Russian-Hungarian co-production "The Red and the White" was originally commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia in which the Bolsheviks seized power. However Jancso chose to set the action two years later in 1919 and showed Hungarian irregulars supporting the Communist "Reds" in fighting the Tsarist "Whites" as the two sides battled for control in the hills overlooking the Volga river. As well as deviating on the required setting Jancso also chose to use a radically different approach to the film than that expected. Rather than shooting a hagiographic account of the birth of Soviet communism Jancso produced a profoundly anti-heroic film that depicts the senseless brutality of the Russian Civil War specifically and all armed combat in general. 7.75 x 3.5 folded 15.25 x 10.75 unfolded. Director Jim Jarmusch's first effort "Permanent Vacation" 1980 was his final thesis at New York University's film school. As with the earliest films of Jean-Pierre Melville and David Lynch he then spent four years making "Stranger than Paradise" shooting as money allowed.
