Set in Chicago and shot there on location. <br/><br/>Largely low-budget and geared towards a young urban audience blaxploitation films often depicted African-Americans overcoming hostile authorities through cunning and violence as well as conflicts internal to the culture. Though some of the first mainstream films to feature predominantly black casts and introduce previously non-represented elements of black culture including the notable use of funk and soul music in soundtracks they were also panned for furthering stereotypes about black people. From the archive of the PIX Agency a photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers as well as those still living in Europe and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.<br/><br/>Miller's play premiered on Broadway at the ANTA Washington Square Theatre on January 23 1964 and ran for a successful 208 performances although not without facing a fair amount of criticism for its thinly veiled cynical portrayal of Marilyn Monroe from whom Miller had recently been divorced. Featuring images of Warren Beatty and Alexandra Stewart. <br/><br/>Some say that the New Hollywood era began with "Bonnie and Clyde" in 1967 others say "Mickey One" in 1965. Either way you look at it the director was Arthur Penn. Beatty was not only the muse for Penn's avant-garde tale of a comic who runs afoul of the mob but also the crazed youngster who would get Penn assigned to Bonnie and Clyde and initiate the second golden age of cinema. Screenwriters Robert Benton and David Newman shopped their script about the notorious 1920s gangsters to every major American studio then to Francois Truffaut and then to Jean-Luc Godard all to absolutely no avail. A young and reckless Warren Beatty already an established Hollywood bad boy took an interest and brought on director Arthur Penn and for a rewrite screenwriter Robert Towne. According to legend Beatty begged Jack Warner on bended knee to green light the production after which the film barely got an initial release. Eventually due more to studio politics than interest in the film it received a general release due mostly to huge political upheavals at Warner Brothers whereupon it became a box office smash. <br/><br/>9.5 x 14 inches.
