Starring actors Meyer Seigner Marie Sabouret and Micheline Boudet figure prominently in the images in lavish period costumes. A few have cropping annotations either on the glassine sleeve or on an affixed glassine slip. Laid in is a signed typescript letter from "Y. Guillot" addressed to Gay Lussac at Cinedis the film's distribution company and dated 1960. Guillot was "Le Chef du Service des Editions" and he thanks Lussac for sending him "ektachromes" from the film promising to include images in upcoming issues of his publication. Housed in an original French Crumiere paper photo box with annotations in holograph ink and pencil on the lid. <br/><br/>Based on Moliere's 1670 five-act play "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme" about social climbing and the bourgeois personality. Seigner plays Jourdain middle-aged and aspiring to aristocracy. He learns fencing dancing music and philosophy constantly making a fool of himself. The second adaptation of Moliere's play after Humberto Gómez Landero's "El gran Makakikus 1944 and preceding Roger Coggio's "Le bourgeois gentilhomme" 1982. <br/><br/>18 transparencies 3.25 x 4.5 inches 1 two-frame transparency 2.25 x 4.75 inches. Copy belonging to legendary screenwriter Dudley Nichols inscribed by Nichols to Los Angeles Times film critic Phil Scheuer on the title page: "By Dudley Nichols / Confidential! / For Phil Scheuer from D. Nichols-with admiration." Nichols' ownership name is also in holograph pencil at the top right corner.<br/><br/>Renoir's second American feature an antifascist propaganda film following a meek schoolteacher in a German-occupied European country who is falsely accused of murder and forced to take a stand against the Nazis and their collaborators. <br/><br/>At the peak of his career Nichols worked with many key Golden Age directors including John Ford George Cukor Howard Hawks Fritz Lang and of course Jean Renoir. He was a founding member of the Screen Writers Guild and is best remembered for "The Informer" 1935 for which Nichols won an Academy Award "Bringing Up Baby" 1938 "Stagecoach" 1939 "For Whom the Bell Tolls" 1943 "Scarlet Street" 1945 "And Then There Were None" 1945 "The Bells of St. Mary's" 1945 and "The Tin Star" 1957. He continued to write prolifically for film up until the time of his death in 1960. <br/><br/>Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. <br/><br/>Pink titled wrappers noted as FINAL on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 104 dated OCTOBER 2 1942 with credits for director Jean Renoir and screenwriter Dudley Nichols. A rare program from Jean Renoir's brief and fascinating exploration of historical drama. <br/><br/>An interestingly designed program with a lovely illustration of "Elena" Ingrid Bergman with her "men" hanging from the ties of her bodice. Two-color informational leaves are interspersed with pairs of bound-in full-color matte stills from the film with a clear Mylar protector as issued on the front panel and a gold comb binding. Laid in are three two-color French foldouts all specifically advertising the film. <br/><br/>5 leaves with 8 smaller photo-llustrated leaves interspersed throughout all bound in. 16 pages. 12 x 9.5 inches. A homemade set that is possibly unique and if not certainly issued in very small quantities for internal use.<br/><br/>Numerical annotation "800" on the verso of each photo in red holograph ink.
