(RICCARDI PRESS). BIBLE IN ENGLISH - KING JAMES VERSION
THE FIRST BOOK OF MOSES CALLED GENESIS
London: Riccardi Press Philip Lee Warner for the Medici Society 1914. No. 288 OF 500 COPIES ON PAPER and 12 on vellum. 272 x 205 mm. 10 5/8 x 8". xv i 88 pp. 2 leaves.
Original linen-backed pale blue paper boards top edge gilt others untrimmed. In the original blue-gray printed dust-jacket. Woodcut Riccardi Press device on final leaf title vignette and 10 color plates with captioned tissue guards after F. Cayley Robinson. Ransom p. 395; Tomkinson p. 149. ◆Dust jacket a little darkened and with minor chips and tears around edges a couple light stains and a little rubbing to lower edges of binding light browning to part of the pastedowns but a nearly fine copy the often-missing dust jacket generally quite well preserved and the text and plates with only isolated trivial blemishes.

This is an attractive printing of the first book of the Bible in the august language of the Authorized Version and with ethereal color plates by Frederick Cayley Robinson depicting key events from the text. Painter set designer and book illustrator Robinson 1862-1927 studied art in London Paris and Florence and was much influenced by Edward Burne-Jones. Rendered in pale tones the plates here include one of Robinson's finest works "Death of Abel" which captures in DNB's words "the horrific moment after the fratricide—the 'frozen moment' held for eternity." DNB says further that our volume represents Robinson's "finest achievement as a book illustrator." Founded by Herbert Horne the Riccardi Press was adopted as the imprint of the Medici Society in 1909 and issued books until 1933. According to Tomkinson "the books have nearly all been printed at the Chiswick Press under the supervision of Charles T. Jacobi until his retirement in 1922 and published by Philip Lee Warner who was Publisher to the Medici Society until his death in 1925. . . . The aim of the Press has been to produce finely printed books at reasonable prices and for sale through the ordinary channels of trade. . . . All editions are strictly limited and the type is distributed after the edition has been printed.". [Riccardi Press] Philip Lee Warner for the Medici Society unknown

Galbraith Joseph Allen 29 November 1818 20 October 1890 professor of experimental philosophy and proponent of home rule was born November 1818 in Dublin the son of Richard Galbraith a merchant and Scottish presbyterian and his wife Rebecca. His father died in the 1820s after which he largely supported himself. Scientific researches into barometric pressure geology and the mathematics of pendulum-motion with respect of the rotation of the earth published in the RIA Proceedings succeeded his appointment as Erasmus Smith's professor of natural and experimental philosophy in May 1854. Together with his great friend Samuel Haughton qv he had previously initiated a hugely popular series of manuals on aspects of mathematics and physics to intermediate and undergraduate level. These were so concise and well structured as to be recommended as textbooks for English schools and colleges by the privy council. They did not go out of print until the 1900s and helped to end Galbraith's financial insecurity. During the Crimean war 18536 both friends also made a great reputation tutoring numerous students for the difficult army artillery and engineering exams. He became grand chaplain of the grand lodge of freemasons in the 1850s and worked as treasurer on the management committee of the masonic girls school in Donnybrook." - See Dictionary of Irish Biography. "Edgar Galbraith 16 June 1853 16 June 1899 - his son. Was an Irish international rugby union player. A choice example of a Commonwealth era Cambridge-printed King James Bible notorious for its errors from the press of John Field in a finely executed later provincial binding - to a very distinct style - by the Gilmour family Andrew then George of binders and stationers of Salisbury fl.1800 onwards. As was noted by the contemporary pamphleteer William Kilburne in his Dangerous errors in several late printed Bibles London 1659 part of a series railing against the poor-quality Bible printing work of Henry Hills and John Field this edition omits Psalms Ch.143 v.4 in its entirety 'and there are many other faults as I am well informed of very great notoriety'. The first complete Bible to be produced entirely in shorthand engraved throughout by John Sturt and including the metrical psalms of Sternhold and Hopkins translated from the King James Authorised Version by English writing master and stenographer William Addy c.1618-c.1695. Addy's shorthand system was extensively outlined in his Stenographia or The art of short- writing compleated in a far more compendious method than any yet extant London 1684. As he himself acknowledged it owed a great debt to the system of Jeremiah Rich d. c. 1660. Darlow & Moule transcribe a note from the B.M. copy which explains the method of production: 'This Bible in Stenography my Brethren at sight and all others skill'd in ye Art of Sculpture know it's Engraven; but in a Peculiar Manner. It was written by Mr. Addy in ungum'd Ink burnished on the wax and then run through with the Engraver by John Sturt'. The old bookseller's description tipped into this copy refers to the work as the 'Pepys shorthand Bible' referencing J.W. Carlton's 1933 article "Samuel Pepys his Short-hand Books" Transactions of the Bibliographical Society. New Series Vol. XIV p.83 1933; however Pepys copy is described as featuring 'a rapturous dedication to William of Orange' which was not added until the 1689 reissue confusingly with the title continuing to display the 1687 date of this Bible. One of three slight variant editions published in 1687. [BIBLE, KING JAMES VERSION]
The holy Bible conteyning the old testament and the new: newly translated out of the originall tongues
London: Robert Barker 1611. A3 bound backwards. Title page the 2 leaves of the engraved map and the final 2 leaves in excellent facsimile. Additional title page from a later edition bound in behind the facsimile. Gothic and Roman types text double column with 59 lines per column and printed within woodcut rule-border calendar and almanac printed in red and black. General title-page within engraved border by Christian Boel and section title for the New Testament dated 1611 within woodcut border. Full-sheet engraved map of the Holy Land by John Speed after Dr John More 17 leaves of genealogical tables incorporating woodcut illustrations of Adam and Eve Noah’s Ark the Tower of Babel and other Biblical subjects numerous woodcut head- and tail-pieces historiated and ornamental initials. Contemporary calf boards rebacked spine labels; some staining a few leaves with small holes or edges torn away but generally a very good copy. With a notation on the paste-down that the book was “received of William Biggs for the sum of 5 shillings . by me John Lang. Ford Warminster†dated 1747 and with a small but elaborate bookplate of William Thomas Smedley 1858-1920 the noted collector of Elizabethaniana and Bacon; his library was sold in 1924 to Henry Clay Folger and the Folger library collection today includes nearly 1500 volumes formerly owned by Smedley. First edition second issue/state called the “she†Bible because of the reading of Ruth III 15: “she went into the citieâ€. In addition because of the small hole in C6 Matthew 26:36 it is impossible to tell whether the word Judas or Jesus is printed. The King James version of the Holy Bible is arguably the most important book ever published in English. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than 5 years and was laboriously attended to by over 50 translators and researchers. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale Coverdale Geneva and Bishops’ Bibles it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. Engraved title page in red and black General Title in brown Contents in blue. Early pages of Genesis tanned some light foxing throughout small chip to head of spine otherwise a very attractive copy clean and sharp with tight binding. Hills 1161 First issued by subscription in 54 facsicules beginning 1843 the Harper Illuminated Bible was a sensational event in the history of publishing with an astonishing 1600 illustrations previously no American Bible had more than 100. This great expansion in capacity for illustrations was made possible by a nely invented process of Electrolysis brought to Harper by their new printer and engraver Joseph Alexander Adams spearheading the installation of an entirely new printing press and production building. Adams commissioned fresh illustrations of Scriptural scenes by J. G. Chapman whose modernized renderings jump off the page in stark contrast to the 'Old Masters' so often used in illustrated Bibles. 'The Harper & Brothers Illuminated Bible is rightly prominent in American printing history and not just Bible Printing History. The intention was tremendous the execution marvellous.' David Daniell The BIble in English 656-7. Harper unknown
