Jean-Baptiste Poquelin known by his stage name Molire1622- 1673 was a French playwright and actor who is considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. Among Molire's best-known works are Le Misanthrope L'cole des femmes Tartuffe ou L'ImposteurL'Avare Le Malade imaginaire and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Born into a prosperous family and having studied at the Collge de Clermont now Lyce Louis-le-Grand Molire was well suited to begin a life in the theatre. Thirteen years as an itinerant actor helped him polish his comic abilities while he began writing combining Commedia dell'arte elements with the more refined French comedy. Edmond Geffroy 1804 - 1895was an French actor as well as a painter of history religious subjects and portraits. He divided his time between painting and theatre. He studied painting in the workshop of Amaury-Duval. Between1851 to 1863 he painted portraits of his fellow actors in as themselves or in the costume of their favourite roles. Condition: In a quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally sound but with slight wear to extremities and staining to rear board of volume one slight rubbing and marks to boards.
