Dicevamo che è quasi impossibile determinare il contributo specifico della musica, non solo come esperienza estetica emotiva dell'ascoltatore, il che è ben comprensibile, ma anche come teoria musicale, alla formazione di una estetica dell'emozionalismo. Il più importante motivo di questa difficoltà riteniamo di poterlo individuare nel fatto che la fonte della teoria emozionale della musica è la retorica, come è la retorica la principale fonte della teoria emozionale della poesia, fatta eccezione sia per la musica che per la poesia di quella fase antichissima, documentabile in Gorgia, nella quale si assiste invece, come abbiamo già detto, ad una figliazione della retorica dalla poetica e dalla musicologia. La cosiddetta " patologia " musicale è presa pari pari dalla retorica, così come deriva dalla retorica il postulato della finalità emozionale della musica . Se è vero che la musica e la sua teoria esercitarono un sicuro, sebbene indefinibile, influsso sulla genesi dell'estetica dell'emozionale ? (S. 25) ? L'operazione è semplice. Si tratta di agire sulla sfera della emotività presentando all'immaginazione fantasmi senza corpo, ombre senza realtà che compiuta la loro funzione di liberarci da quella inanità, da quel vuoto affettivo, da quella " froideur qui déplaìt si fort " , rientrano nel nulla senza spiacevoli fenomeni secondari. Nulla è infine più facile che provocare questa sollecitazione emotiva nell'animo del lettore o spettatore, dal momento che tutti gli uomini hanno un'inclinazione ad amarsi reciprocamente e ad amare in particolare " ceux, en qui ils rencontrent certaines qualitez aimables, & avec qui ils ont comme une simpathie " . Sfruttando questa " simpatia ", questa capacità dell'uomo di trasferirsi nella condizione emotiva di un altro per riviverla come un'esperienza e una condizione personale , è facile ai poeti creare dei " personaggi " ai quali il lettore s'interessi tanto da identificarsi con essi. In virtù di questa identificazione col personaggio " il ressent avec plaisir toutes les émotions des passions diverses, qu'excitent en lui les differens états, par lesquels le Poéte fait passer ce Heros " . Questo piacere estetico provocato dallo " Erlebnis " simpatetico delle passioni rappresentate è un piacere puro, non essendo queste passioni riflesse, contrariamente a quelle reali, " accompagnées d'aucune fàcheuse circonstance " . ?
