Sir Arnold Wesker (1932-2016), playwright and author [Aubrey Hodes, Israeli author; Centre 42; New Wave; Kitchen Sink Drama; Ang
Sir Arnold Wesker playwright. Two Typed Letters Signed both 'Arnold Wesker' to Israeli author Aubrey Hodes regarding his touring festival Centre 42 the English attitude to 'culture outside the commercial framework' and Israeli arts funding.
20 Fitzroy Square London N1. 17 October 1962. Both 1p 4to and in good condition lightly aged and folded once. Both letters addressed to Hodes at Beit Rosenberg Keron Heyesod Street Herzlia-on-Sea Israel. The subject of the letters is Centre 42 the touring arts group Wesker formed to bring culture to the masses on his release from prison following a sentence for civil disobedience with the Committee of 100 in opposition to nuclear weapons. The group moved to the Roundhouse in London in 1964. The first letter begins: 'Emersed as I have been in the festivals I have only just got around to answering your letter and I find in it that you ask me to send some material to a friend in Ramat Chem. I am afraid it is too late to send him material now as he has probably returned. I am sorry about this but I hope that the enclosed material will give some indication of the scope of the festivals.' The first three festivals have been 'mounted with varying success but the project as a whole has gained a great deal of public attention though not always sympathy. There is something inherent in the English personality that considers culture outside the commercial framework to be an enfringement of a basic democratic principle.' He concludes: 'Plenty of Israeli theatres appear to have wanted my plays – none of them have yet done so. sic God knows why.' The second letter is on Centre 42's stylish letterhead in grey and red and begins with reference to a meeting between the two men in Israel and 'Megged's book' a copy of which he has received from the publisher Gollancz. 'Concerning Centre 42 I have sent all the information about us to Dov Vardi and I understand he is going to write about us'. Wesker is sending 'a set of literature' to Hodes adding: 'However it strikes me as very strange that anyone in Israel should be interested in this sort of movement since as far as I understand the Histadruth spends over a million pounds on the Arts and cultural activity in Israel and this is what we dream of happening here in England. … We even quote Israel as an example of the situation we should like to see.' 20 Fitzroy Square, London, N1. 17 October 1962. unknown

Sir Arnold Wesker (1932-2016), playwright and author [Bernard Kops (b1923), playwright; New Wave; Kitchen Sink Drama; Angry Youn
Sir Arnold Wesker playwright. Typed Letter Signed 'Arnold' to playwright Bernard Kops appealing for copies of his plays to send to Cuba which he has visited finding that they have 'very bad theatre' due to 'their intolerable isolation'.
27 Bishop's Road London N6. 24 November 1964. 1p 4to. In fair condition aged and lightly creased. Folded twice. The letter begins: 'Dear Bernard You probably know that I have just returned from Cuba and it was an exciting trip. Unfortunately one of the most depressing things was their very bad theatre; this is particularly because it is new and has no tradition but also to a great extent due to their intolerable isolation.' Although there is little that they can do Wesker promised to 'send as many plays and books' as he can. 'They really don't have hard currency to purchase more than a handful of international works' so Wesker has promised 'to write to a few writers and publishers asking whether they would contribute copies of their work which I would send together with the Leyland buses on a ship to Cuba'. Kops cannot imagine 'how hungry they are to be in contact'. He asks for copies of Kops's plays and of his book 'The Whole World is a Wedding'. He would buy the books but this 'would work out very expensive' so he is 'asking lots of writers to share the burden'. He ends with best wishes to 'Erica and the children'. 27 Bishop's Road, London, N6. 24 November 1964. unknown

Sklar, George and Albert Maltz
Peace on Earth: An Anti-war Play in 3 Acts

New York: Samuel French 1934. First Edition.

Small Octavo 7 1/2 x 5 inches; 191 x 127 mm vi 2 120 pages in gray cloth titles in black to spine in the rare unclipped illustrated dust jacket.

Longshoremen go on strike refusing to load munitions on ships bound for Europe. Why If there's going to be a war they're the ones who will have to fight it. The strike engulfs the local college community and a psychology professor is sentenced to death for a murder he didn't commit.

The influential theatre critic Brooks Atkinson of The New York Times referred to "Peace on Earth" as a "propaganda play" a description that the authors George Sklar and Albert Maltz would probably not disagree with. "During the course of a lively and disorderly evening 'Peace on Earth' manages to denounce scab labor capital endowed universities the detachment of college teachers the jingoism of the alumni of the class of 1917 and the indifference of the police to free speech" Atkinson wrote. The New York Times November 30 1933 page 39.

The play was first produced by the Theatre Union Inc. on November 29 1933 at the Civic Repertory Theatre in New York. Robert Keith played the hapless professor in a performance that Atkinson praised in an otherwise hostile review. ".Robert Keith plays with a grave serenity and a decent sincerity that command respect and sympathy" Atkinson wrote.

Copies of "Peace on Earth" are scarce in the antiquarian book market and those with dust jackets are even more elusive especially with jackets as nice as this one. Unfortunately the artist of this beautiful jacket is uncredited. This copy was previously owned by John K. Martin founder of Black Sparrow Press with his discreet book label to the rear pastedown.

CONDITION: Near Fine with marginalia on one page a bit of foxing to the fore edge and a small book label of John K. Martin to the rear pastedown. The unclipped dust jacket is also Near Fine with only light edge wear. A beautiful copy.

Samuel French hardcover

ROMAN THEATER AND SOCIETY E. Togo Salmon Papers I
A couple of corners are lightly bumped. Former owner's bookplate to ffep (name has been deleted). Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing with chipping to one corner. ; Roman Theater & Society; 9.75 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 200 pages; William Slater's new volume Roman Theater and Society brings an important perspective to the much-maligned status of the Roman theater, which has only recently been reappraised and appreciated as uniquely Roman rather than criticized for not being Greek. From this point of embarkation, William Slater and the nine contributors discuss theater in Rome and the Greek east with a definition of performance incorporating not only stage performances but also dinnertime entertainment, sporting events, and political events. Contributors are T. D. Barnes, K. M. Coleman, J. C. Edmonson, E. R. Gebhard, J. R. Green, E. J. Jory, W. D. Lebek, and D. S. Potter. Individual chapters combine literary evidence with archaeological, thereby engendering a deeper appreciation for the social and political roles of Roman theater. It becomes clear that these roles were of great influence in giving voice to the popular demands of the average Roman. In examining the roles of theater the contributors turn to the players and audience themselves for deeper understanding.
