‎The Three Theban Plays : King Oedipus,Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone.‎

‎Contains : Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone. Robert Fagles' translation conveys all of Sophocles' lucidity and power: the cut and thrust of his dialogue, his ironic edge, the surge and majesty of his choruses and, above all, the agonies and triumphs of his characters. Newberry. Fine English text edition issued by the Bibliophile Society The owner of this set Truman H. Newberry was a Secretary of the Navy under Theodore Roosevelt. He was elected to the Senate in 1918. On Mar ch 20, 1920, Newberry was convicted on charges of spending $3,750 to secure his Senate election (quite amazing, considering modern ideas about expenditures to secure political office). The U.S. Supreme Court overturned this decision (May 2, 1921) on the grounds that the U.S. Senate exceeded its powers in attempting to regulate primary elections. By a vote of 46 to 41 (January 12, 1922), the Senate declared Newberry to have been duly elected in 1918. On November 18, two days before the start of the 3rd session of the 67th Congress, Newberry resigned as certain members resumed their efforts to unseat him. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W118‎

‎OEDIPUS REX A Verse Translation with Introduction and Notes‎

‎As new. ; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 154 pages; Oedipus Rex is the greatest of the Greek tragedies, a profound meditation on the human condition. The story of the mythological king, who is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother, has resonated in world culture for almost 2,500 years. But Sophocles' drama as originally performed was much more than a great story—it was a superb poetic script and exciting theatrical experience. The actors spoke in pulsing rhythms with hypnotic forward momentum, making it hard for audiences to look away. Interspersed among the verbal rants and duels were energetic songs performed by the chorus. David Mulroy's brilliant verse translation of Oedipus Rex recaptures the aesthetic power of Sophocles' masterpiece while also achieving a highly accurate translation in clear, contemporary English. Speeches are rendered with the same kind of regular iambic rhythm that gave the Sophoclean originals their drive. The choral parts are translated as fluid rhymed songs. Mulroy also supplies an introduction, notes, and appendixes to provide helpful context for general readers and students.‎

‎SOPHOCLES: OEDIPUS REX‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 282 pages; 'Sophocles, in a play that won only second prize, created a masterpiece that in the eyes of posterity has overshadowed every other achievement in the field of ancient drama. In it he played on certain latent terrors that are part of man's nature in all kinds of societies and at all epochs; terrors whose influence may pervade our lives in ways we scarcely guess ...' These words come from the introduction to Dr Dawe's edition of Oedipus Rex. In an attempt to analyse why this play '...has exercised such a powerful and long-lasting fascination on the human mind' Dr Dawe devotes his introduction to an examination of the content of the story and to the technique displayed by Sophocles in the unfolding of the plot. The commentary deals authoritatively with problems of language and expression. This is an edition for classical scholars, undergraduates, and students in the upper forms of schools. The Introduction requires no knowledge of Greek and may be read by anyone interested in Greek literature and drama.‎
