Leatherbound volume with gilt detailing to the boards and spine gilt foredge marble paper pastedownsand illustrated throughout. George Cruikshank September 27 1792February 1 1878 was an English caricaturist and book illustrator. Born in London he was a member of the Cruikshank family of caricaturists and artists the son of Scottish painter and caricaturist Isaac Cruikshank. Cruikshanks 60-year career began with political prints that attacked the royal family and leading politicians in 1820 he received a royal bribe of 100 for a pledge not to caricature His Majesty George III of the United Kingdom in any immoral situation. His work included a personification of England named John Bull who was developed from about 1790 in conjunction with other British satirical artists such as James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson. Cruikshank replaced one of his major influences James Gillray as England's most popular satirist. For a generation he delineated Tories Whigs and Radicals impartially. The book is illustrated throughout by John Leech with 10 hand-colored plates and in-text black & white illustrations. Custom leather binding gilt decorations and raised bands on the spine gilt page edges at the top and intricate gilt edges on the inside covers.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Small stain spot at the top edge of the front cover; stain near the lettering on the spine that continues to the right edge of the back cover; the leather has worn at various places on the covers; worn corners; 1/2" area along the top edge of the back cover where the board has worn. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The front contemporary end paper has been removed. The pages are in very good condition with only an occasional light stain or ink smudge; 1/2" tear at the lower-inner corner of the frontispiece and a 1" tear at the outer edge. Railroad-themed bookplate of Robert Heysham Sayre affixed to the front pastedown; Sayre was VP and chief engineer of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and VP and general manager of the Bethlehem Iron Company precursor to Bethlehem Steel.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Clean covers and spine with no stains and bright gilt lettering and illustrations on the front cover and spine; cloth tears at the corners. Bright gilt on all page edges. Fraying to the top and bottom edges of the spine. Cloth tear at the hinge between the right edge of the spine and the front cover half-way down from the top. Tight binding. Hinge cracks between the frontispiece and title page and at the back of the book between the pastedown and end paper. The pages are in very good condition - clean and white with no writing stains tears or foxing found. The frontispiece and end paper preceding it have pulled from the spine 2" down from the top though both pages are still firmly attached. Bookplate affixed to front pastedown. In addition to contributions to various periodicals and newspapers including Punch The Illustrated London News The Times and Morning Herald he produced over fifty plays many of which attained great popularity and he also helped to dramatize some of Dickens' works. He is perhaps best known as the author of Comic History of England Comic History of Rome Comic Blackstone etc. He was also distinguished in his profession acted as a commissioner on various important matters and was appointed a metropolitan police magistrate.
