Défié en raison de ses positions antisémites radicales Drumont adresse à un abbé une lettre singulière sur la question du duel : « Je comprends tout ce qu'un prêtre doit penser du duel et je suis de votre avis mais c'est une nécessité dans certains cas » Loin de renier ses opinions « Tous les Juifs du monde entier m'adressent des cartels » l'auteur se défend en adoptant une position sarcastique par rapport au duel : « La meilleure façon de les éviter est de se déclarer prêts à les accepter ». L'humour qui clôt la lettre notamment par l'insertion d'un dialogue fictif montre toute la dérision avec laquelle Drumont considère sa situation : « « ah vous ne vous battez pas C'est bien sûr - bien sûr. - Eh bien ! moi je veux me battre jusqu'à ce que mort s'en suive ! » Rions un peu !
