477 9 2 blank pp.Rare and beautifully illustrated edition of 117 Aesop's fables in French each with an extensive discussion of the moral followed by a four-line verse by Jean Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde. He adds French prose translations of further fables without illustrations: 18 numbered fables by the Renaissance Italian humanist poet and scholar Francesco Filelfo or Philelphus 1398-1481 translated from the Latin verse; 37 fables based on Aesop by Gabrias and Avienus translated from the Latin verse; two longer fables: the "Battle of the cats and the rats" and the "Battle of the rats and the frogs"; five Aesop "tales" taken from Plato's dialogue Protagoras; six numbered "poetical fables" with Olympian Gods as protagonists; and finally three more "tales" the first from Herodotus and the last from Gerbellius. Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam first published the present collection of fables in 1708. Bellegarde 1648-1734 a French Jesuit was clearly influenced by the very popular French Aesop translation by Jean Baudoin whose 1649 and 1659 Paris editions also included FilelfoÂ’s fables. Even the frontispiece is based on BaudoinÂ’s except that the king with armillary sphere hunting horn and spear is replaced by Aesop with the same objects.The engravings in the present edition are copies of those in the 1708 edition where each Aesop fable had a separate half-page engraving here combined in pairs except for the last. The engravings are beautifully executed by Georg Paul Busch active 1713 d. 1756 a Berlin copper-plate engraver. The animals and intentions of Aesop's fables are drawn with a firm and certain hand in clear and rather "sec" scenes and movements with the strong contrasts in black and white working as a kind of "colour" for the plates. The book is set primarily in types roman and italic cut by Nicolaus Kis in Amsterdam but they were probably cast in Leipzig and the book may have been printed there.Very slightly browned with an occasional mostly marginal stain and a marginal worm hole in a few leaves but still in very good condition. Besides the life of Aesop and Aesop's fables the book contains several collections of fables and single fables by other authors pp. 232-364: Ignatius von Nicaea Gabriae Graeci fabellae often added to the Aesop canon; Aphthonius Excercitamentis de fabula; Philostratus De fabula; pseudo Homer Batrachomyomachia the battle of frogs and mice a parody of Homer's Iliad; Musaeus De Ero & Leandro Hero and Leander; Agapetus De officio regis; Hippocrates Ius iurandum the Hippocratic oath! and Theodorus Prodromus Galeomnomachia the battle between the cats and the mice the last two in Greek only. The book ends with a 4-page index and the colophon.With a few contemporary manuscript notes in brown ink. With some marginal worm holes mostly in the gutter of quires r and s and some mostly marginal water stains more serious in quire c and a dark stain in the upper outside corner of 2 leaves not approaching the text otherwise in good condition. The binding is wrinkled with a 1½ x 2 cm gap in the backstrip some small tears and the 2 pair of ties lost. XVI 98 112 pp."Seventh" edition of PhaedrusÂ’s Latin verse translation and adaptation of 94 Aesop fables without the commentaries by Gude Rittershausen and others in the redaction by Pieter Burman 1668-1741 professor of eloquence and history at the Utrecht University which he first published in 1698. It includes the 34 fables added in the appendix of J.F. NilantÂ’s 1709 edition. Phaedrus wrote in the first century CE and went through dozens of editions but the present edition calls itself the seventh perhaps counting only editions of BurmanÂ’s redaction of the five books. The first edition of the five books appeared at Troyes in 1596.With several contemporary owner's inscriptions and annotations and drawings throughout; modern stamps on the pastedown. 16 200 6 pp. pp. 193-194 and last blank missing.Rare first Amsterdam edition based on François Foppens’s 1682 Brussels edition of a famous choice collection of fables rendered in elegant Latin verse by the Italian scholar and Latin poet Gabriel Faerno ca. 1510-1561 best known for this collection of fables first published posthumously at Rome in 1563. Documentary evidence indicates that Pirro Ligorio drew the anonymous illustrations for the etchings of the first edition. Plantin published an Antwerp edition in 1566 apparently using the same woodblocks as his 1573 and 1585 editions. Pieter van der Borch redrew Ligorio’s illustrations as models for Plantin’s woodcutters: Arnold Nicolai and Gerard van Kampen who signed their blocks “A” and “G” respectively. The woodcuts in the present Amsterdam edition are so close to Plantin’s copying every line and even the block cutters’ initials in the same style that they are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. While often described as Aesop’s fables Faerno used other sources as well so mixed in with Aesop’s animal fables he includes stories of people and Greek gods including some from Brabrius and others.With the owner's inscription of Petrus Mounier 1788 on the first flyleaf. It contains more than 500 fables collected by the humanist classical scholar Joachim Camerarius Bamberg 1500 - Leipzig 1574 who played a decisive role in the German Reformation helped Philip Melanchthon with the composition of the famous Augsburg Confession and published editions of many classical authors. The preface and printer’s note originally copied the 1564 date from the 1564 edition but in the latter a correction slip changed the date to 1570. One can see in the present copy that the slip was present but it has fallen off. Many copies lack the last printed leaf present here containing only the colophon.Lacking the final blank leaf. Very good with gift inscription in ink on the front free endaper "Fanny Faithorne by her Father and Mother 1848". § First edition not a rare book but a very attractive copy of with lovely illustrations. "This book was the first illustrated entirely by John Tenniel 1820-1914 and marked a turning point in his career. Tenniel had been introduced to John Murray by Leopold Martin and Murray asked him to provide all the drawings for a revised edition of Aesop. Tenniel based his drawings on his early sketches of animals in London's Zoo. 'The book sold well and only when a new edition was compiled in 1851 did Tenniel make the necessary corrections to the anatomy to his animal drawings to harmonize with the twenty new cuts added by the accomplished bird and animal painter Joseph Wolf'. One particular design of flying beasts from hawks to bats see p. 133 caught the eye of Lewis Carroll and convinced him Tenniel would be suitable for his Alice illustrations. It was translated by Pierre de Boissat who was probably also responsible for the moral reflections attributed to Jean Baudoin. Amsterdam: Johannem Janssonium & Viduam Elizei Wyerstraet 1667. 8vo engraved title trimmed at foot touching the imprint 62 1-462 blank leaf index 204pp. With 103 engraved plates in the text most 1/4 or 1/3 page. 18th-century polished calf panelled covers red morocco label and shelf mark on backstrip subtly rebacked. Large armorial bookplate of Washington Sewallis Earl Ferrers probably bound for him. § First illustrated edition of Phaedrus to be published in the Netherlands and the first edition edited by Laurentius. It contains the text of 92 Phaedrus fables with extensive annotations the first edition of 1596 had only 64 fables. In this copy the plates to pages 133 194 and 205 are not the cancellanda i.e. have not been cancelled. Also Landwehr records that the 'brothel scene' on page 276 has often been defaced or removed but is untouched in this copy. Landwehr F143. Phaedrus 15 BC - AD 50 Italy was a "Roman fabulist the first writer to Latinize whole books of fables producing free versions in iambic metre of Greek prose fables then circulating under the name of Aesop." Berkshire: Golden Cockerel Press 1926. Small quarto. v i 94 1pp. A collection of Aesop's much-celebrated and much-cited fables some illustrated with bold wood engravings by Celia M. Fiennes. In keeping with the Golden Cockerel Press's tradition of creating limited editions of classic masterworks this representation was reprinted from Sir Roger L'Estrange's 1692 publication reinvigorating his translation with sharp typography and modern illustrations. Bound quarter cloth with brown paper over boards and gilt-stamped title on spine with dust wrapper. Adhesive residue on front paste-down. Minor bumps to spine and corners and wrapper shows some foxing and toning else fine. This particular copy belonged to Alma Ruth Lavenson whose bookplate is laid in. Lavenson was a prolific and influential 20th-century photographer fostering friendships with the likes of Ansel Adams Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston. Her unabashed and personal photography has since inspired generations of female photographers. Golden Cockerel Press unknown
