Here with 27 plates as called for. All the copies at sold at auction in the last 40 years have been seriously incomplete being no more than 22 plates. Illustrated with a frontispiece twenty-seven full page plates and one-hundred and two in-text engravings Collated as being bound without leaves H3 H4 N1 P4 Y3 and Dd1. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the Cardiff University Libraries. The register runs as a-k4 l2 A-G4 H2 I-M4 N2-4 O4 P3 Q-X4 Y3 Z-Cc4 Dd3 Ee4. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Page 121 is incorrectly numbered 221. 'Aesop's Fables' are an influential collection of fables that are credited to Aesop who was a slave and storyteller. Aesop is believed to have lived in Ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BCE. The fables were originally of the oral tradition and weren't collected into a manuscript until about three centuries after Aesop's death. The fables were originally addressed to adults covering religious political and social themes. However during the Renaissance they begun to be used for the moral education of children. Aesop's fables have survived the test of time as they provide insight into the morals and values of people during ancient history values that are still prominent in modern history. The most popular fables include 'The Tortoise and the Hare' 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' 'The Crow and the Pitcher' 'Hercules and the Wagoner' and 'The Lion the bear and the Fox'. Aesop's existence is unclear especially as there are no surviving writings by him. However his tales are often characterised by animals and inanimate objects that are able to speak. Edited by Roger L'Estrange. L'Estrange was an English pamphleteer and defender of the Royals during the English Civil War. He was greatly involved in political controversy in his life and is best known for his ruthless attack on the parliamentarians 'An Account of the Growth of Knavery'. Illustrated by Francis Barlow an English etcher who was one of the most prolific printmakers and book illustrators of the seventeenth century. Barlow originally did his Aesop woodcuts for John Ogilby's 1665 translation. Bookplate to the front pastedown 'Steadfast John Gretton Stapleford'. Gretton was a British businessman and Conservative politician of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He won two gold medals in the 1900 Olympic Games for sailing. Condition: in the original calf binding. Externally sound. Cracks to the joints. Rubbing to the boards and spine. Some loss of leather to the joints and extremities. Small amount of loss to the spine. Light surface cracks to the spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Tear to the front endpaper with the plain endpaper and marbled endpaper detaching from each other to the tail. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd mark and the odd spot. Small repairs to leaves e3 k4 S1 affecting only four words of text to leaf S1. Tidemark to the front endpaper and to multiple pages. Prior owner's ink annotation to the head of the title page. The present selection includes no fewer than 196 fables each illustrated by a charming and well-executed woodcut several of which were later used as models by Bewick. The frontispiece of Aesop orating is after Vandergucht. Phaedrus; Aesop
Phaedri Augusti Caesaris Liberti Fabularum Aesopicarum Libri Quinque Accessere Publii Syri Et Aliorum Sententiae ex Recensione cl Bentleii Editio Altera Castigata et Prioribus Correctior
ont> Excudebat E Williams : Etonae 1820 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A very smart Latin edition of Phaedrus' collection of Aesop's Fables. Phaedrus was the first versifier of a collection of Aesop's fables. Rebound in a very smart full calf binding. Phaedrus' manuscripts were not discovered until the Renaissance and his importance therefore emerged as an author and as a translator of the fables. He retells Aesop's fables in 'Senarii' which is a loose iambic metre. Phaedrus' 'Fabularum Aesopiarum' was first published in 1507 by Pierre Pithou. To the preliminary leaves in English there is a list of proverbial mottos used in Phaedrus' fables in Latin and English. These include 'Honor becomes not a fool' 'the weakest goes to the wall' and 'slander always leaves a sore behind. ' This particular edition of the fables was issued by Eton school. This was quite common for Phaedrus' works which quickly became school editions in both prose and poetry. A lovely pocket sized example of this important translation of these fables. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with very minor shelfwear. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright. Title page is rubbed to the second two lines affecting the first word of each. Just the occasional light spot to pages. Overall Condition: Near Fine. ont> Excudebat E Williams : Etonae hardcover
