The Devil upon Two Sticks. Translated from the Diable Boiteux of M. Le Sage. To which are prefixed Asmodeus's Crutches a Critical Letter upon the Work; and Dialogues between Two Chimneys of Madrid
London: Harrison of Paternoster-Row 1780. Octavo pp.xvii; 18-145; 1 blank. Two volumes in one text printed in two columns illustrated with four superb hand-coloured plates by Stothard. Bound in full laticed calf later respine with red morocco title label gilt ruling to board edges. This edition with Sothard's engravings after designs by Walker is scarce. In excellent condition; faint rubbing to endcaps a little edgeworn with a loss of gilt detailing in places corners bumped colour plates remain vivid. 'The Devil upon Two Sticks' or 'Le Diable Boiteaux' is a satirical fantasy set in Madrid on the follies and vices of mankind written by the French comic writer A.R. Le Sage. The story which deals with the weakness and gullibility of men follows Asmodeus' journey after being liberated from a bottle in which he was imprisoned by an astrologer. The character of Asmodeus became the model for numerous narratives - including Dickens' Jacob Marley - in which demons provide humans with a magical tour of contemporary life and vice. M. Le Sage
Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane
ont> J F C Rivington et al : Londres 1795 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A lovely four volume set of Rene Le Sage's famous picaresque novel Gil Blas. Adorned with numerous detailed engravings. A new edition which has been revised. Bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes William Leitch. It is probably that this bookplate is that of the 19th century Scottish astronomer natural scientist and Minister of the Church of Scotland. Leitch emigrated to Canada to become the Principal of Queens University. Le Sage was a French novelist and playwright. His first literary efforts were his plays and translations of other works. His first prose work was the first two parts of this novel. The third part of Blas was published in 1724 and the fourth in 1735. An uncommon London imprint. In the original French. With eight plates to each volume thirty two plates across all volumes. Gil Blas is a picaresque novel which follows the tale of the novel's namesake a man born to a stablehand and chambermaid. He is educated by his uncle and has the opportunity to brighten his future with attending the University of Salamanca. However he is forced to help robbers and is faced with jail. Blas then becomes a valet and typical to the form of picaresque novels uses his wit and adaptability to resolve many situations with the disreputable characters he meets. The illustrations to this work are unsigned. Stylistically they are very similar to those in the French edition of the same year which contained 100 plates by Hubert after Charpentier and others. Condition: In uniform calf bindings. Externally generally smart. A little loss to the head and tail of spines and several light marks to boards. Small crack to the head of front joint to volume IV. Bookplate to front pastedown William Leitch. Front free endpaper is loosening to the second volume. Front free endpapers to volumes III and IV have slight loss. Internaly all volumes are firmly bound. Pages and plates are particularly bright with just the occasional spot or handling mark. Overall Condition: Very Good. ont> J F C Rivington et al : Londres hardcover
