Questo libro presenta una chiara e articolata ricostruzione del percorso di riflessione che da Aristotele fino alle attuali ricerche nel campo delle scienze umane si interroga sulla struttura delle categorie. La revisione del tradizionale approccio alle categorie, proposta negli anni '70 da psicolinguisti e antropologi quali E. Rosch e P. Kay, ha inaugurato un nuovo filone di studi sul problema, non più centrato sulla distinzione fra proprietà necessarie e sufficienti bensì sulla nozione di esemplare caratteristico o "prototipo", intorno al quale i membri di una categoria si dispongono sulla base di "affinità familiari" (Wittgenstein). Traduzione italiana della prefazione di Samuel Johnson al suo dizionario di inglese pubblicato nel 1755 dopo otto anni di lavoro, con lo scopo di 'raffinare la nostra lingua grammaticalmente, e ripulirla da ogni barbarismo, licenze idiomatiche e combinazioni irregolari'. Questo era stato gia' fatto, in Italia, dall'Accademia della Crusca nel 1612 e dall'Acade'mie in Francia nel 1694. Johnson concepi' l'idea di costruire il suo dizionario su principi simili, pensando che la lingua inglese avesse ormai raggiunto tale perfezione lessicale da non aver bisogno di alcun miglioramento: l'essenziale era dunque salvarla fissandone i limiti con una nuova autorita'.
