‎The birth and flowering of canonical jurisprudence in the twelfth century is one of the most striking and fruitful developments of the age, marking an important turn in the history of the Church and in framing the essential elements of the rule of law in political and social life. Raymond of Penyafort was an important participant in these developments. Born near Barcelona in 1175, he became a teacher of canon law at Bologna, the greatest centre of legal studies. He joined the newly founded Order of Preachers (Dominicans), and championed multilingual education of the friars for a more effective evangelization of Muslims and Jews. He became Master General of the Order in 1238, and died in 1275. He was canonized in 1601 and has been declared the patron saint of canon lawyers. Pope Gregory IX appointed Raymond to produce a comprehensive compilation of papal legal decisions. The result, the Decretals of Gregory IX (1234), would remain normative in the Catholic Church until 1917. Raymond drew on it to compose his Summa on Marriage, a summary of learned reflection on the law of marriage, to aid his Dominican brothers in hearing confessions, where numerous problems touching on marriage would have been encountered. The definition of marriage and of its ends, stages and impediments, arrangements and consequences are the subject of the work. This translation of it offers students and scholars alike a comprehensive presentation of the medieval teaching on marriage - learned in content, practical in orientation. It consists of forty-eight Distinctions, the bulk of which deal with God in his transcendence and with the mystery of the Trinity. The person of God the Father is the topic in Distinction iv, that of God the Son in v-ix, that of God the Holy Spirit in x-xviii. Distinctions xix-xxxiv are deeply concerned with the language that can be used in describing the Trinity and the relations among the divine persons. The remaining distinctions deal with the divine attributes as they become manifest in God's action towards creatures. An important concern is the preservation of God's sovereign freedom and the avoidance of any confusion regarding the absolute transcendence of God, despite his graceful self-disclosure in creation and revelation. These sacraments are the main subject of Book 4, taking up forty-two of its fifty Distinctions: Baptism is treated in Distinctions 2-6, confirmation in 7, the Eucharist in 8-13, penance in 14-22, extreme unction in 23, sacred orders in 24 and 25, and marriage in 26-42. The Book concludes with eight Distinctions on the last things ' the resurrection of the body, purgation, hell, the last judgement, and eternity.‎

For Henry, the gift represented a literary and political coup. With all the rhetorical skill of a learned poet, Nagonius presented the King as a classical hero on an epic scale in the latest Italian style. The work thus acknowledged Henry's international significance. Other recipients of Nagonius's panegyric verse include Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Vladislav II of Bohemia, Louis XII of France, Doge Leonardo Loredan, the condottieri Niccolo Orsini and Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, Giovanni Bentivoglio, lord of Bologna, and Duke Ercole d'Este of Ferrara. The presentation of a deluxe manuscript to Julius II, celebrating the pontiff 's campaign in the Romagna, marked the climax of the poet's career. ‎The importance of the Legenda aurea for the Late Middle Ages can hardly be overestimated, as witness the impressive manuscript tradition of the original Latin text as well the different vernacular versions. This huge hagiographic collection, organised per circulum anni, can be considered as a compendium of the medieval religious worldview: it offers insights into the (deuterocanonic) tradition of the New Testament, the lives and deaths of the most important saints, the history of the church of Rome, and it can be read as a catechism in narrative form. But the Legenda aurea is also a treasure-trove of stories, motifs and themes splendidly reflecting medieval mentality in its entirety. The influence of the Legenda aurea on literature and iconography is so far-reaching, that the book is an indispensable aid for the 'reading' of countless medieval texts, paintings and sculptures. The text was translated several times into Middle Dutch and of the first southern Dutch translation (ca. 1357), made by Petrus Naghel (? 1395) in the Charterhouse of Herne, a modern edition is now available. This edition of the Gulden legende - the second volume of a set of two - contains the legends of Pope Urban to the Feast of Church Dedication, and carries a concise introduction. The first volume of the set will appear in print in 2013; it contains the remaining legends and an expansive introduction comprising an introduction of text and translator, a description of the manuscript used for the edition, a statement of editorial policy and indices of names. ‎Translations medievales : cinq siecles de traductions en francais (xie-xve siecle) a ete elabore par trois laboratoires francais : Centre d'Etudes Superieures de Civilisation Medievale (CNRS - Universite de Poitiers) ; Etudes et editions de textes du Moyen Age (CNRS - Universite de la Sorbonne) ; Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes (CNRS Paris) - associes sous la direction du CESCM dans un projet qui a ete officiellement reconnu par l'Agence National de la Recherche (ANR). Les clercs medievaux ont sauvegarde tout un pan des savoirs du passe, en les copiant dans les premiers siecles, puis en les translatant en latin, et dans les langues vernaculaires a partir du XIe siecle. Mais on ne connaissait pas jusqu'ici la veritable penetration de ces textes, leur diffusion, leur influence sur la langue et la culture francaises. On connaissait moins encore l'impact des autres langues vernaculaires sur les langues gallo-romanes et sur la langue d'oil en particulier ; on savait tres peu de l'interpenetration entre langue d'oc et langue d'oil. On ne possedait pas une vue d'ensemble sur les traductions concernant les sciences. C'est de ce constat d'insuffisance, de cette conscience que par-dela ce qui a ete sans doute definitivement perdu, le premier obstacle a la comprehension de la genese de la culture et de la sciences francaises, et dans une certaine mesure de l'Europe occidentale, venait de la segmentation des informations dont dispose la communaute scientifique, qu'est ne le projet de mettre en reseau les connaissances individuelles et disciplinaires. Transmedie est un corpus bibliographique et analytique des traductions dans les langues gallo-romanes qui propose a travers son repertoire, se trois annexes et son volume d'eclairages critiques une histoire pratiques et des theories de la traduction. Le corpus bibliographique recense, ordonne et etudie les informations philologiques sur les oeuvres traduites en francais entre le XIe et le XVe siecle. Tous les domaines de la civilisation antique et medievale sont concernes par le corpus : droit, grammaire, hagiographie, histoire, litterature, philosophie, science, theologie. Plus de 1 200 oeuvres-sources, relevant d'une dizaine de langues de l'Atlantique et du Haut et du Bas Moyen Age, environ 2 800 traductions, une dizaine de milliers de references bibliographique concernant les manuscrits, plus de 600 incunables medievaux, ont ainsi ete etudies et classes par des specialistes francais et internationaux. L'histoire de ces translations ainsi que celle non moins interessante de la traduction empechee, que le repertoire dessine en creux, permet egalement de mieux eclairer par-dela les frontieres des langues les caracteristiques des autres idiomes et cultures medievales. Car, comme le rappelle Derrida, ? Traduire, au Moyen Age comme aujourd'hui, signifie avant tout ecrire, et ecrire au seuil de deux monolinguismes ? . Sans l'expliciter vraiment, les ecrivains medievaux reflechissent deja a la question que posera quelques siecles plus tard Walter Benjamin : ? une traduction peut-elle etre faite pour les lecteurs qui ne comprennent pas l'original ? Ceux qui s'etaient imagines en nains juches sur les epaules de ces geants de l'Atlantique qu'ils translataient n'ont certes pas pousse si loin la provocation, mails ils se sont interroges sur le sens et la portee de la translatio, sur sa necessite et sa gratuite, sur ses beneficiaires directes et indirectes, sur la difficulte d'un ars qui est deja un opus. La logique dont s'inspire Transmedie est la meme, mais l'ordre du processus est inverse : le trois volets du projet (volume d'etudes, corpus et base en ligne) constitueront le socle sur lequel pourra s'edifier d'une maniere plus ample la connaissance progressive de la translatio studii. ‎This volume examines the various forms of contact between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe from 800 to 1350. It consists of twenty-five papers from international scholars specialising in archaeology, onomastics, literature, art history, epigraphy, religious history and linguistics. The volume is innovative in three respects: (i) in transcending conventional historical boundaries, by bringing together work on both the viking and medieval periods; (ii) by examining the ways in which mainland Europe influenced Scandinavia (e.g. kingship, law and social organisation; and classical and continental literary traditions); and (iii) by synthesising all the material for an English-language readership for the first time. The broader timespan of investigation illustrates the changing nature of contact and the gradual integration of Scandinavia into European society: by 1350 Scandinavia was no longer a heathen outpost on the periphery of the known world, but an integral part of Western Christendom. The cultural impact of mainland Europe on Scandinavia, frequently mediated through religious channels, although less dramatic, is shown to have had a more significant long-term impact than the earlier viking raids.
