In 1496 the poet laureate Nagonius presented Henry VII with a manuscript of Latin panegyric poetry. This elaborate diplomatic gift from Pope Alexander VI solicited the King's support against Charles VIII of France. The verse emphasized the mutual benefit of an alliance: if Henry supported him the Pope would acknowledge disputed Tudor claims to England's throne. For Henry, the gift represented a literary and political coup. With all the rhetorical skill of a learned poet, Nagonius presented the King as a classical hero on an epic scale in the latest Italian style. The work thus acknowledged Henry's international significance. Other recipients of Nagonius's panegyric verse include Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Vladislav II of Bohemia, Louis XII of France, Doge Leonardo Loredan, the condottieri Niccolo Orsini and Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, Giovanni Bentivoglio, lord of Bologna, and Duke Ercole d'Este of Ferrara. The presentation of a deluxe manuscript to Julius II, celebrating the pontiff 's campaign in the Romagna, marked the climax of the poet's career. This analysis of the life and works of Nagonius thus provides a fascinating insight into the world of late medieval and early Renaissance court cultures. It contributes to the growing field of neo-Latin scholarship, examining the manuscripts and para-texts, studying the relationship between volume and dedicatee, placing these manuscripts within the wider literary and artistic cultures of the courts where they were presented, and investigating the role of neo-Latin verse within court cultures. ‎The importance of the Legenda aurea for the Late Middle Ages can hardly be overestimated, as witness the impressive manuscript tradition of the original Latin text as well the different vernacular versions. This huge hagiographic collection, organised per circulum anni, can be considered as a compendium of the medieval religious worldview: it offers insights into the (deuterocanonic) tradition of the New Testament, the lives and deaths of the most important saints, the history of the church of Rome, and it can be read as a catechism in narrative form. But the Legenda aurea is also a treasure-trove of stories, motifs and themes splendidly reflecting medieval mentality in its entirety. The influence of the Legenda aurea on literature and iconography is so far-reaching, that the book is an indispensable aid for the 'reading' of countless medieval texts, paintings and sculptures. The text was translated several times into Middle Dutch and of the first southern Dutch translation (ca. 1357), made by Petrus Naghel (? 1395) in the Charterhouse of Herne, a modern edition is now available. This edition of the Gulden legende - the second volume of a set of two - contains the legends of Pope Urban to the Feast of Church Dedication, and carries a concise introduction. The first volume of the set will appear in print in 2013; it contains the remaining legends and an expansive introduction comprising an introduction of text and translator, a description of the manuscript used for the edition, a statement of editorial policy and indices of names. ‎Translations medievales : cinq siecles de traductions en francais (xie-xve siecle) a ete elabore par trois laboratoires francais : Centre d'Etudes Superieures de Civilisation Medievale (CNRS - Universite de Poitiers) ; Etudes et editions de textes du Moyen Age (CNRS - Universite de la Sorbonne) ; Institut de recherche et d'histoire des textes (CNRS Paris) - associes sous la direction du CESCM dans un projet qui a ete officiellement reconnu par l'Agence National de la Recherche (ANR). Les clercs medievaux ont sauvegarde tout un pan des savoirs du passe, en les copiant dans les premiers siecles, puis en les translatant en latin, et dans les langues vernaculaires a partir du XIe siecle. Mais on ne connaissait pas jusqu'ici la veritable penetration de ces textes, leur diffusion, leur influence sur la langue et la culture francaises. On connaissait moins encore l'impact des autres langues vernaculaires sur les langues gallo-romanes et sur la langue d'oil en particulier ; on savait tres peu de l'interpenetration entre langue d'oc et langue d'oil. On ne possedait pas une vue d'ensemble sur les traductions concernant les sciences. C'est de ce constat d'insuffisance, de cette conscience que par-dela ce qui a ete sans doute definitivement perdu, le premier obstacle a la comprehension de la genese de la culture et de la sciences francaises, et dans une certaine mesure de l'Europe occidentale, venait de la segmentation des informations dont dispose la communaute scientifique, qu'est ne le projet de mettre en reseau les connaissances individuelles et disciplinaires. Transmedie est un corpus bibliographique et analytique des traductions dans les langues gallo-romanes qui propose a travers son repertoire, se trois annexes et son volume d'eclairages critiques une histoire pratiques et des theories de la traduction. Le corpus bibliographique recense, ordonne et etudie les informations philologiques sur les oeuvres traduites en francais entre le XIe et le XVe siecle. Tous les domaines de la civilisation antique et medievale sont concernes par le corpus : droit, grammaire, hagiographie, histoire, litterature, philosophie, science, theologie. Plus de 1 200 oeuvres-sources, relevant d'une dizaine de langues de l'Atlantique et du Haut et du Bas Moyen Age, environ 2 800 traductions, une dizaine de milliers de references bibliographique concernant les manuscrits, plus de 600 incunables medievaux, ont ainsi ete etudies et classes par des specialistes francais et internationaux. L'histoire de ces translations ainsi que celle non moins interessante de la traduction empechee, que le repertoire dessine en creux, permet egalement de mieux eclairer par-dela les frontieres des langues les caracteristiques des autres idiomes et cultures medievales. Ceux qui s'etaient imagines en nains juches sur les epaules de ces geants de l'Atlantique qu'ils translataient n'ont certes pas pousse si loin la provocation, mails ils se sont interroges sur le sens et la portee de la translatio, sur sa necessite et sa gratuite, sur ses beneficiaires directes et indirectes, sur la difficulte d'un ars qui est deja un opus. ‎This book is concerned with the social and gendered meanings of love in medieval Norway and Iceland. In the Viking Age, to love would most often imply a submissive social position, while being loved by a woman could elevate a man above the status of her family. Women were supposed to love upwards in the social hierarchy, but could also use their desire to negotiate the social position of men. A close reading of the skaldic poetry shows the dilemma men faced when longing for women's love and approval. These ideas of love relations shaped Norse interpretations of courtly love and marriage formation by consent in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. However, new ideas of sexuality, gender and aristocratic culture changed several aspects of love and marital affection in the later middle ages. Men became the loving subject, but in a way that did not challenge the social order. For women, ideal love was attached to humility and submission to parents and husband. But even though the new ideology of love and marriage to some extent neutralized the tensions between consent and parental control, the sources show that both men and women could use the new conceptions of love to serve their own marital and social strategies. ‎This is a significant new study of the festival culture of northern Europe in the later Middle Ages: more specifically of the German-speaking communities of the great cities of the eastern Baltic littoral in what was then called Livonia, corresponding roughly to the territories of present-day Estonia and Latvia. While subject to a degree of Scandinavian influence, the festival culture of Livonian cities such as Riga, Reval (Tallinn), and Dorpat (Tartu), which were members of the Hanseatic League, substantially overlapped with that of other German-speaking areas, not least the Hanseatic cities of northern Germany. The major part of the book is devoted to the main annual festivals of the merchants' guilds: Christmas, Carnival, the popinjay shoot, and the May Count celebrations. There follows an analysis of specific aspects of the festivals: spatial contexts, finances, food and drink, entertainments (dances, jousts, games), customs and rituals. There is also a concluding glance at changes in festival culture after the Reformation. The study combines close scrutiny of local customs (made possible by the almost miraculous survival of uniquely detailed documentation), contextualization within the wider comparative context of festival culture in late-medieval Europe, and an alterness to significant recent scholarship in both English and German. ‎This collection of essays by international scholars focuses on the vernacular urban culture of the Chambers of Rhetoric in the Low Countries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Reflecting social, religious, and economic realities at a time of fundamental change, the Rhetoricians' plays also reveal a range of poetic and theatrical conventions that make them an important source of information both on practical stagecraft and on the role of theatre in the urban community, as seen in their involvement in civic processions or the organization of drama competitions. The volume sets the Rhetoricians' drama in the cultural life of the provinces of the Low Countries during a period dominated by ruling foreign dynasties: the Burgundian dukes and then the Habsburg dynasty, most prominently the Emperor Charles V and his son King Philip II of Spain. It was a time of intense religious controversy which gave rise to debates both on and off stage. These debates, far from damaging Rhetorician culture, actually stimulated its activities and development to such an extent that Rhetoricians became representative voices for their time. The admixture of entertainment and education offered by the Chambers to their own members - and to a wider public - was one which, though originating in a medieval context, soon became linked with humanist and Renaissance thinking. ‎Fundamental to all translation work, the concept of 'displacement' allows one to take into account the multiple successive states inhering in a single text, and to interpret these variations. Translation is, in effect, a form of transfer; more specifically, it involves a movement from one context to another, be it national, social, political, historical, linguistic or religious. The texts examined here illustrate, each in their unique way, the relationship between contextual change and audience. They are also the product of subtle interactions between a variety of elements, the result of which is a 'reinvention' of their respective roles and uses over time. For example, a text intending to entertain may also have educational outcomes; a book of local miracles may attract pilgrims and contribute to the economic life of a monastery; a text and its translations may at some point be appropriated for polemical purposes, while a library of translated texts founded on humanist principals may also serve political ends. Furthermore, each successive adaptation and its accompanying annotations impacts upon the tonality of a text. While this diversity of meanings may inspire some (such as the medieval poet Marie de France), it moreover raises a number of important and difficult questions for the modern translator. How, for example, does one translate the 'harmonics' underlying a series of mystical puns? The 'solution' usually involves a compromise that both enhances and undermines the translated text. This volume presents a selection of twenty-eight papers delivered at the Seventh International Conference dedicated to The Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages, which took place at the University of Paris III - Nouvelle Sorbonne in July 2004. The period covered by the texts and their translations extends from antiquity to the present day. The literary and critical breadth of these papers, as well as the rigorous interrogation of the modern translation theory, illustrates the remarkable vitality and diversity of current scholarship in this field. ‎The contributions to this volume are organised in a way that bear out the vitality of translation activity in the medieval period and the resourcefulness of modern scholarship in addressing the phenomenon of translation at large. No other period relies so heavily on this literary process to construct its cultural identity. Translations from Latin into the vernacular, or from one vernacular into another, or even from a vernacular into the Latin language, are just a few of the many forms medieval translation can take. The codification of the translation process as appropriation, transformation, or accommodation does not sufficiently emphasize the overarching curiosity and interest that motivates any translation activity. Rather, preceding the stages of appropriation and re-interpretation, it is positive inquisitiveness and openness towards linguistic and cultural difference that generate the production of a new text and the transference of culture from one sphere to another. Translation practice creates a dialogic exchange between cultures, it recognises difference and diversity, both linguistic and cultural, yet it also shapes its new product for the use of an audience or readership that is concurrently aware of the reciprocal need to participate in that exchange, in order to improve its own culture. It is that positive inquisitiveness which this volume emphasizes. The volume initially addresses the way in which translators dealt with texts from the early medieval period. It then considers the phenomenon of bilingualism and the privileged relationship that England held with the continent, especially the Italian and French literary traditions. The third part of this volume tackles the problem of fifteenth-century religious translation in England and, to a lesser extent, France, and complicates it by showing its inevitable political implications. Understood more particularly as an act of cultural transfer, translation activity can also be considered beyond the linguistic process. The fourth part of the volume deals with several instances of translations from one genre into another, and from one media into another. The contributions to this volume provide some answers to conundrums in the theory and practice of translation encountered during the medieval period. They also point to new ways of considering this literary process, and by praising diversity and difference, they suggest a less traumatic way of reading Babel than is usually implied. Was there a women's movement in the thirteenth century and is such a question meaningful in its medieval context? Far from being resolved, the issue of whether women had a thirteenth-century renaissance has still decisively to unsettle the periodization of Western European history in twelfth and sixteenth-century humanist renaissances. Herbert Grundmann long ago demonstrated the participation of women in the eremitically-inspired reforming movements of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and in the production of vernacular literature. Yet it is upon his work that this volume builds, for the diocese of Liege is the key area in this development. It was from Liege that Jacques de Vitry approached the papacy to secure permission for the women of this bishopric of Liege, France and Germany to live together and to promote holiness in each other by mutual example. The seventeen contributors to this volume examine not only the beguine religious life in the southern Low Countries, but also the impact of this movement on later medieval Sweden, England and France, the new modes of influence exerted by women in their religious lives, and the revivals of feminine spirituality in the late medieval West through to contemporary North America.
