Martial; Craig A Williams (Ed )
MARTIAL: EPIGRAMS BOOK TWO; Edited with Introduction Translation and Commentary
Oxford University Press. 2004. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Light bumping to upper corners. DJ has minor shelfwear.; This edition provides an English translation of and detailed commentary on the second book of epigrams published by the Latin poet Marcus Valerius Martialis. The past ten years have seen a resurgence of interest in Martial's writings. But contemporary readers are in particular need of assistance when approaching these epigrams and until now there has been no modern commentary dedicated to Book II. This new commentary carefully illuminates the allusions to people places things and cultural practices of late first-century Rome that pervade Martial's poetry. It analyzes the epigrammatist's poems as literary creations treating such topics as the structure of the individual poems and of the book as a whole and the influence of earlier texts on Martial's language and themes.; 320 pages . 0195155319 . Jocelyn, H D
THE TRAGEDIES OF ENNIUS; The Fragments. Edited with an Introduction and Commentary
Cambridge University Press. 1967. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Scholar's name to ffep Robert Palmer. DJ is price-clipped. Minor chipping to DJ.; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries; 482 pages; The Tragedies of Ennius were theatrical adaptations of Attic originals. None has survived; but fragments of twenty-two of them can be found in the work of other writers. Dr Jocelyn prints all the identifiable fragments substantial extracts from the works which quote them and where necessary a critical apparatus. The long introduction discusses the early history of Roman public spectacles; the physical conditions of the theatre in the third and second centuries; the effect these had on the poets who had to adapt the scripts of Attic tragedies; the general character of the Latin plays thus produced; and the fate of these scripts particularly those of Ennius in later antiquity. The commentary is both detailed and discursive. Besides glossing and interpreting in the usual way it considers the problems of restoring individual fragments and of using these fragments to reconstruct both the plays from which they came and the Attic originals. It also elucidates the methods used by Ennius to reproduce the effects of language and style of the classical Athenian dramatists. . 0521069114 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Ovid; Peter E Knox (Ed )
OXFORD READINGS IN OVID
Oxford University Press. 2006. Softcover. Near Fine. Very light shelfwear; No other ancient poet has had such a hold on the imagination of readers as Ovid. Through the centuries artists writers and poets have found in his work inspiration for new creative endeavors. This anthology of twenty of the most influential papers published in the last thirty years represents the broad range of critical and scholarly approaches to Ovid's work. The entire range of his poetry from the Amores to the Epistles from the Black Sea is discussed by some of the leading scholars of Latin poetry employing critical methods ranging from philology to contemporary literary theory. In an introductory essay Peter Knox surveys Ovidian scholarship over this period and locates the assembled papers within recent critical trends. Taken together the articles in this collection offer the interested reader whether experienced scholar or novice an entrée into the current critical discourse on Ovid who is at once one of the most accessible authors of classical antiquity and one of the least understood.; Oxford Readings in Classical Studies; 541 pages . 0199281165 . Dyck, Andrew R
A COMMENTARY ON CICERO DE OFFICIIS
University of Michigan Press. 1996. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Very faint bump to head of spine else fine.; Toward the end of the last century Cicero's work came under attack from several angles. His political stance was sharply criticized for inconsistency by Theodor Mommsen and others his philosophical works for lack of originality. Since then scholars have come to a better understanding of the political conditions that informed the views of Mommsen and his contemporaries about Caesar and Cicero and as a result Cicero's writings have been restored to a more appropriate position in the literature and history of the Roman Republic. At the same time recent years have seen an intensive study of Hellenistic philosophy and this has shown more clearly than before that even while following Greek models Cicero nonetheless pursued his own political and in the ethical works moralistic agenda. Composed in haste shortly before Cicero's death de Officiis has exercised enormous influence over the centuries. It is all the more surprising that Andrew R. Dyck's volume is the first detailed English commentary on the work written in this century. It deals with the problems of the Latin text taking account of Michael Winterbottom's new edition it delineates the work's structure and sometimes elusive train of thought clarifies the underlying Greek and Latin concepts and provides starting points for approaching the philosophical and historical problems that de Officiis raises. A work of major importance for classicists philosophers and ancient historians this Commentary will be an invaluable companion to all readers of Cicero's last philosophical work.; 760 pages . 0472107194 .
