Green, Richard & Eric Handley
IMAGES OF THE GREEK THEATRE
British Museum Publications. Very Good. 1995. Softcover. 0714122076 . Gift inscription from Eric Handley to G. P. Goold and Philippa Goold on ffep. Light foxing to top of textblock. ; Classical Bookshelf; 127 pages; Classical Greek theatre survives not only in plays that we still read and perform but also in artistic images. Depictions of performances actors and their masks were frequent in classical times and continued to appear even beyond the fifth and sixth centuries A. D. long after the plays had ceased to be staged. These artifacts together with the remains of actual theatres and the texts of surviving plays give us an idea of how Greek drama must have appeared in its heyday. In this book Richard Green and Eric Handley outline the history of the Greek theatre drawing on the evidence supplied by the theatres themselves the surviving plays and artistic artifacts. They show and discuss painted pottery notably from fifth-century Athens and fourth-century southern Italy that records scenes from plays. Terra-cotta figures mosaics paintings metalware and gems also help them build a picture of Greek theatre. All these artifacts tell the story of Greek drama as seen through the eyes of those admirers who kept its classic moments and traditions alive and who found a place for it in the society of their own times. They help the modern playgoer and reader to imagine what a visit to the theatre in classical Greece might have been like. ; Signed by One Author . British Museum Publications paperback

Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1970. Hardcover. 0521077001 . Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Foxing to top of textblock. Very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 12; 256 pages; The surviving text of the fragmentary Phaethon of Euripides depends chiefly on two sources: two pages from a Euripidean manuscript written about A.D. 500 and a papyrus of the third century B.C. which contains a substantial part of the parodos. These sources are supplemented by a number of citations in classical authors and by a recently published fragmentary hypothesis. Professor Diggle has examined all the manuscript evidence and offers many decipherments. He gives a text of the play and of the hypothesis an exegetical commentary prolegomena and appendices in which he discusses the treatment of the Phaethon myth in classical literature and attempts a reconstruction of the plot of the play. . HOMER AND THE ORAL TRADITION
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1976. Hardcover. 0521213096 . Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Light Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Dustjacket rubbed. DJ spine sunned. ; 231 pages; The Songs of Homer Cambridge University Press 1962 was a major contribution to Homeric studies establishing important theories about the composition structure and transmission of the monumental poems. In this 1976 volume Geoffrey Kirk returns to Homer but the themes are largely different. He considers in particular the nature of oral and epic poetry and the meaning of an oral tradition. There are problems here of interest not only to classicists and Homeric specialists but also to students of English and comparative literature and to anthropologists concerned with the literature of traditional societies. Those pieces that were previously published were revised and unified for the volume. The longest section on 'the oral and the literary epic' is derived from the J. H. Gray Lectures which Professor Kirk delivered in Cambridge in 1974 and which had not been previously published in any form. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Jocelyn, H. D.
THE TRAGEDIES OF ENNIUS The Fragments. Edited with an Introduction and Commentary
Cambridge University Press. Good with no dust jacket. 1967. Hardcover. 0521069114 . Notes in ink and pencil by G. P. Goold to some pages. Light bumping to a couple of corners. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries; 482 pages; The Tragedies of Ennius were theatrical adaptations of Attic originals. None has survived; but fragments of twenty-two of them can be found in the work of other writers. Dr Jocelyn prints all the identifiable fragments substantial extracts from the works which quote them and where necessary a critical apparatus. The long introduction discusses the early history of Roman public spectacles; the physical conditions of the theatre in the third and second centuries; the effect these had on the poets who had to adapt the scripts of Attic tragedies; the general character of the Latin plays thus produced; and the fate of these scripts particularly those of Ennius in later antiquity. The commentary is both detailed and discursive. Besides glossing and interpreting in the usual way it considers the problems of restoring individual fragments and of using these fragments to reconstruct both the plays from which they came and the Attic originals. It also elucidates the methods used by Ennius to reproduce the effects of language and style of the classical Athenian dramatists. . Cambridge University Press hardcover
