MYTHICAL AND LEGENDARY NARRATIVE IN OVID'S FASTI
Brill. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2005. Hardcover. 9004143203 . Gift inscription to R. E. Fantham from author on ffep includes tipped-in note from author. Dust-soiling to one small area of textblock. ; This book analyses the mythical and legendary narratives in Ovid's Fasti as narrative and concentrates on the neglected literary aspects of these stories. It combines traditional tools of literary criticism with more modern techniques taken especially from narratology and intertextuality. From a narratological viewpoint it covers important features such as aperture closure characterization internal narrators description space time and cinematic technique. On the intertextual level it examines the narratives' complex relationship with Virgil Livy and Ovid's own earlier works. Recent criticism on the Fasti has addressed various elements religious historical political astronomical etc. but detailed narrative study has been wanting. This book fills that gap to provide a more informed and balanced appreciation of this multifaceted poem aimed at classicists and literary critics in general for whom all the Latin is translated. ; Mnemosyne: Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 306 pages; Signed by Author . SPECTACLE AND SOCIETY IN LIVY'S HISTORY
University of California Press. Near Fine. 1998. Paperback. 0520210271 . Gift inscription to R. E. Fantham from author to ffep. Very light shelfwear. ; Public spectacle--from the morning rituals of the Roman noble to triumphs and the shows of the Arena--formed a crucial component of the language of power in ancient Rome. The historian Livy c. 60 B. C. E. -17 C. E. who provides our fullest description of Rome's early history presents his account of the growth of the Roman state itself as something to be seen--a visual monument and public spectacle. Through analysis of several episodes in Livy's History Andrew Feldherr demonstrates the ways in which Livy uses specific visual imagery to make the reader not only an observer of certain key events in Roman history but also a participant in those events. This innovative study incorporates recent literary and cultural theory with detailed historical analysis to put an ancient text into dialogue with contemporary discussions of visual culture. In Spectacle and Society in Livy's History Feldherr shows how Livy uses the literary representation of spectacles from the Roman past to construct a new sense of civic identity among his readers. He offers a new way of understanding how Livy's technique addressed the political and cultural needs of Roman citizens in Livy's day. In addition to renewing our understanding of Livy through modern scholarship Feldherr provides a new assessment of the historian's aims and methods by asking what it means for the historian to make readers spectators of history. ; 250 pages; Signed by Author . COLLECTED PAPERS ON LATIN LITERATURE
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 0198149484 . Scholar's small bookplate to ffep R. E. Fantham with note from publisher affixed below. DJ has large tear to front panel and smaller tears to spine ends and a couple of other places. DJ is creased and worn. ; This book collects twenty-six articles on a wide range of topics in Latin literature by the eminent scholar and former Professor of Latin at Oxford Robin Nisbet. Some papers address the historical bearing of various literary works--Gallus on Caesar Virgil and the Gospels and Ovid in exile--while other papers focus more on issues of style symbolism and the poetic address. In articles on prose Nisbet considers the reader's contribution to the understanding of Cicero's speeches and the use of rhythm to determine the punctuation of Latin sentences. The collection ends with a critique of the current tendency to exaggerate the ambiguities of Roman poetry. Original stimulating and at times provocative these papers represent some of the best in recent Latin scholarship. ; 464 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover

APOLLONIUS' ARGONAUTICA A Callimachean Epic
E. J. Brill. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 9004100172 . Scholars' large bookplate to ffep John H. Betts. Else book is fine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. Small strip of back panel has lightly browned. ; The "Argonautica" was said to have been the source of a quarrel between Apollonius who wrote what looks like an epic poem and Callimachus who denounced the writing of epic poetry. Although the quarrel did not take place in the real world its issue controls the poem. The heroes are determined to take part in a Homeric epic which the Callimachean narrator refuses to write. Drawing on the methods of modern literary theorists but eschewing the jargon DeForest shows how Apollonius uses the literary dispute in Alexandria to give a three-dimensional quality to his poem. The amusing conflict between heroes and narrator turns serious when the levels of narrative split apart and Medea steps into the gap as a free-standing figure the forerunner of powerful women in fiction. ; Mnemosyne Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 160 pages . RHETORIC IN THE REST OF THE WEST
Cambridge Scholars Publishing. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2010. Hardcover. 1443821640 . Book is fine. DJ has very light shelfwear else fine. ; While the study of the history of rhetoric has expanded to include an ever-growing range of rhetorical traditions lesser-known figures and under- and un-studied texts it has continued to exist in the hermetically sealed binary of West and Rest. Rhetorical scholars have begun uncovering the many marginalized rhetorical traditions silenced by the homogenous nature of our histories themselves reading and writing new histories of the rhetorical tradition through frames from gender to geography. Despite these substantial challenges to the traditionally received history of rhetoric many voices are still silenced and many spaces are still excluded - voices speaking within the spaces of the less-than-monolithic West itself. This silencing and excluding continues perhaps because of assumptions that no texts exist from these marginalized voices or that substantial rhetorical activity was not conducted in these marginalized spaces - regardless of already extant evidence of rhetorical activity as diverse as rural civic ethos in Classical Greece and Etruscan influences on Roman rhetoric or long-standing passive knowledge of scholarly activity in Medieval Andalusia and Ireland. 'Rhetoric in the Rest of the West' attempts to expand the conversation in those gaps in the history of rhetoric by examining the traditions that lost the cultural competition and have been shrouded in the shadow of the rhetorical tradition. ; 240 pages . Littlewood, C. A. J.
SELF-REPRESENTATION AND ILLUSION IN SENECAN TRAGEDY
Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2004. Hardcover. 0199267618 . Gift inscription from author to 'Michael' on ffep. Very light shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; A. J. Littlewood approaches Seneca's tragedies as Neronian literature rather than as reworkings of Attic drama and emphasizes their place in the Roman world and in the Latin literary corpus. The Greek tragic myths are for Seneca mediated by non-dramatic Augustan literature. In literary terms Phaedra's desire Hippolytus' innocence and Hercules' ambivalent heroism look back through allusion to Roman elegy pastoral and epic respectively. Ethically the artificiality of Senecan tragedy the consciousness that its own dramatic worlds events and people are literary constructs responds to the contemporary Stoical dismissal of the public world as mere theatre. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 344 pages; Signed by Author . Winnington-Ingram, R. P.
SOPHOCLES An Interpretation
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1980. Softcover. 0521296846 . Spine a little creased. 1 corner lightly creased. Light pencil marginalia to a few pages. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. ; 0.94 x 8.82 x 5.91 Inches; 358 pages; In this interpretation of the seven extant tragedies of Sophocles Professor Winnington-Ingram provides not so much a straightforward account of Sophocles as an exploration of his tragic vision of the world. The Sophoclean hero lies at the centre of this vision. Taking the plays individually but without losing sight of the single consistent mind behind them the author faces the questions of how the hero is to be regarded what we are to make of the fates he suffered and the divine powers who controlled those fates. He proceeds by a detailed study of what Sophocles wrote by close attention to form and recurrent themes and especially by close analysis of a number of choral odes. Students of Greek drama will find that this detailed study provides invaluable insights into the meaning of the tragedies. Greek in the text is translated or paraphrased so that the book will also be of interest to students of the literature and drama of other cultures. . Cambridge University Press paperback
