‎GREEK PERSONAL NAMES; Their Value as Evidence‎

‎The British Academy & Oxford University Press. 2000. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. Dustjacket has 1 tear to head of spine and 1 tear to bottom rear corner. Top edge of front board very lightly bumped else fine. Signed by Elaine Matthews to ffep.; Proceedings of the British Academy 104; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages; Within the great diversity of their world the assertion of origin was essential to the ancient Greeks in defining their sense of who they were and how they distinguished themselves from neighbours and strangers. Each person's name might carry both identity and origin - 'I am' . . . inseparable from 'I come from' . . . Names have surfaced in many guises and locations - on coins and artefacts embedded within inscriptions and manuscripts - carrying with them evidence even from prehistoric and preliterate times. The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names has already identified more than 200000 individuals. The contributors to this volume draw on this resource to demonstrate the breadth of scholarly uses to which name evidence can be put. These essays narrate the stories of political and social change revealed by the incidence of personal names and cast a fascinating light upon both the natural and supernatural phenomena which inspired them. This volume offers dramatic illumination of the ways in which the ancient Greeks both created and interpreted their world through the specific language of personal names.; Signed by One Author . 0197262163 . ‎ELECTRA ANCIENT AND MODERN: ASPECTS OF THE RECEPTION OF THE TRAGIC HEROINE‎

‎Institute of Classical Studies. 2012. Softcover. Near Fine. Very light chip to edge of front wrap else fine.; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 113; 250 pages; Electra is a unique complex and fascinating Greek tragic heroine who became a source of inspiration for countless playwrights artists musicians and filmmakers. The daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra she famously supported her brother’s quest to avenge their father’s murder even at the cost of matricide. Her passion for justice and her desire for vengeance have echoed down the centuries to the modern era. Enshrined as the mourner of Greek tragedy par excellence Electra has enjoyed a long and rich reception history. Electra ancient and modern examines the treatment of Electra by all three ancient tragedians Aeschylus Sophocles and Euripides and their dialogue with the mythical tradition that preceded them. The focus then shifts forward in time to case studies of her reception in the eighteenth nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Gradually Electra’s dark desires re-emerge over the course of these three centuries until her passionate cries for vengeance are heard once again. Through its detailed analysis of Electra this book also provides a helpful introduction to the study of Classical Reception its ambitions and methods. . 1905670370 . ‎FROM GOOD GODDESS TO VESTAL VIRGINS; Sex and Category in Roman Religion‎

‎Routledge. 1998. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham. Else book is fine. 1 small closed tear to DJ 1 cm. Else Very light shelfwear to DJ.; 0.79 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 207 pages; The role of women in Roman culture and society was a paradoxical one. They enjoyed social material and financial independence yet they were denied basic constitutional rights. Although Roman history is not short of powerful female figures such as Agrippina and Livia their power stemmed from their associations with great men and was not officially recognized. Ariadne Staples' book examines how women in Rome were perceived both by themselves and by men through women's participation in Roman religion as Roman religious ritual provided the single public arena where women played a significant formal role. From Good Goddess to Vestal Virgins argues that the ritual roles played out by women were vital in defining them sexually and that these sexually defined categories spilled over into other aspects of Roman culture including political activity. Staples provides an arresting and original analysis of the role of women in Roman society which challenges traditionally held views and provokes further questions. . 0415132339 . ‎VITA VIGILIA EST; Essays in Honour of Barbara Levick‎

‎Institute of Classical Studies. 2008. Softcover. Very Good. Inscribed to scholar R. E. Fantham from one of the contributors Geraldine Herbert-Brown on ffep. Light creasing to corners of wraps. Minor shelfwear.; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. The essays in this volume which honour the seminal work of Barbara Levick on the politics and society of imperial Rome above all in the period of Pliny’s life and literary activity further this re-assessment. They consider aspects of Pliny’s life and output which have not so far received serious attention. These include his value as a source for the kings of Rome and their achievements; his attitude to astronomy and natural wonders to gentilician commemoration philosophical sects Roman dress and coinage; and his moral judgements on the fall of the Republic. The essays consider the ideological climate of the Flavian period as reflected not only in Pliny’s attitude to the past but in his construction of Rome and Italy and his relationship to contemporary writers like Licinius Mucianus. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire.; Signed by Contributor . 1905670141 . Institute of Classical Studies paperback‎

‎THE PLAY OF TEXTS AND FRAGMENTS; Essays in Honour of Martin Cropp‎

‎Brill. 2009. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Minor shelfwear. Light bumps to one corner and along 1 edge. Else fine.; Mnemosyne Supplements 314; 580 pages; This volume is arguably one of the most important studies of Euripides to appear in the last decade. Not only does it offer incisive examinations of many of Euripides' extant plays and their influence it also includes seminal examinations of a number of Euripides’ fragmentary plays. This approach represents a novel and exciting development in Euripidean studies since it is only very recently that the fragmentary plays have begun to appear in reliable and readily accessible editions. The book’s thirty-two contributors constitute an international 'who’s who' of Euripidean studies and Athenian drama and their contributions will certainly feature in the forefront of scholarly discourse on Euripides and Greek drama for years to come. . 9004174737 . DJ has light creasing to head of spine.; Leicester-Nottingham Studies in Ancient Society 2; 324 pages; The ancient Greco-Roman world was a world full of cities: not of cities in the modern sense of massive conglomerations but in a distinctive sense of communities in which countryside was dominated by urban centre. Interest in the special relationship of town and country in the ancient world goes back to Max Weber and beyond. This volume of papers by influential archaeologists and historians seeks to bring together the two disciplines in exploring the city-country relationship and its impact on social political economic and cultural conditions in classical antiquity. ‎Hutchinson, G O‎

‎LATIN LITERATURE FROM SENECA TO JUVENAL; A Critical Study‎

‎Oxford University Press. 1993. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Minor shelfwear to boards. Light pencil markings to a few pages.; 384 pages; G. O. Hutchinson explores central aspects of the period in Latin literature often depreciatingly termed 'Silver'. It is unusual in embracing both poetry and prose and in offering close literary discussion of a large number of particular passages. It is a selective and comparative study--throwing fresh light on the period as a whole on individual authors and on differences and affinities between genres. Most space is given to epic and tragedy and to the prose of Seneca and Tacitus; but Juvenal Martial the Younger Pliny and other authors are also treated. The author also considers large features of genre and relates these to fundamental elements of style and to the treatment of some vital themes. He gives the reader a feeling for this brilliant and extraordinary writing and a sense of the excitement and fascination of the literary period. All Latin in the text is translated. . 0198146906 . ‎SIBYLS AND SIBYLLINE PROPHECY IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY‎

‎Routledge. 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good- in Very Good dust jacket. Corners are bumped. Pen lines to margins on about 9 pages. Pencil markings on 2 other pages. Small chip to one corner of DJ. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Writing in pencil to front DJ flap.; 236 pages; In antiquity a considerable number of books of prophecies went under the general title of "Sibylline Oracles". Rulers as significant as Augustus consulted them in time of danger or crisis for advice and prognoses. Increasing numbers of "ex post facto" prophecies laying a particular interpretation on facts of recent history came to be attributed to one of the mysterious Sibyls. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Cumaean Sibyl who guides the hero in the sixth book of Vergil's "Aeneid" . In fact she was somewhat unusual in her similiarity to other oracular prophetesses such as the Pythia. For where the latter prophesied in response to particular inquirers one of the distinguishing characteristics of Sibyls was that they composed discursive verses for distribution to the world at large. This Professor Parke's last book which was virtually complete on his death in 1986 is an account of a subject both rarely treated in recent decades and difficult to access for all but the most expert. In its pursuit of the sometimes elusive Sibyls it ranges from Heraclitus to Eusebius from Archaic Asia Minor to Christian Rome. This book should be of interest to undergraduates postgraduates and academics of classics. . 0415003431 . Routledge hardcover‎
