NAMING ACHILLES
Oxford University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1987. Hardcover. 0195048601 . Light shelfwear. Foxing to textblock. ; 0.75 x 8.56 x 5.63 Inches; 204 pages; F. A. Wolf set the "Homeric Question" nearly two centuries ago when he argued convincingly that "Homer" was a non-literate bard incapable of composing and performing the monumental Iliad and Odyssey as we have them. In the long debate that has followed one of the most prominent figures has been Milman Parry who argued that there was great economy and extension of formulaic diction in the Homeric poems that the poet was in effect highly constrained by this formulaic diction and by the strict metrical requirements of the oral tradition. He concluded that only a non-literate bard could have composed such epics under these constraints. In Naming Achilles David Shive takes issue with Parry's findings. Engaging in a close analysis of the hero Achilles as he is named in all the grammatical cases he has concluded that Parry's thesis does not hold that there is more extension and less economy than Milman Parry claimed to find. Homer's poetry can be seen as more creative less restricted and in fact does not differ markedly from subsequent literary work. . Oxford University Press hardcover

WILD JUSTICE A Study of Euripides' Hecuba
Oxford At the Clarendon Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 0198147899 . Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Minor Shelfwear. Review of book by Marsh McCall tipped in signed by Mccall to Philippa Goold. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 283 pages; Euripides' Hecuba is is dominated by the vengence which Hecuba takes on the faithless Polymestor and explores in a complex and profound manner the potential of revenge as a subject for tragedy. The sacrifice of Polyxena is in counterpoint to the revenge action; the whole is set in the chaotic aftermath of the fall of Troy. The combination of plots creates one of Eruipides' most effective dramas full of pathos suspense and excitement. This the first book-length study of the play in English argues that it has been greatly undervalued by critics who have failed to appreciate the power of its rhetoric the subtlety of its characterization and the beauty of its choral odes. The book also examines and seeks to explain the powerful influence of Hecuba in the Renaissance and compares the play with English revenge tragedy of the 16th and 17th century. . EURIPIDES: HERACLIDAE With Introduction and Commentary
Oxford Clarendon Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0198147589 . Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; 240 pages; This edition and commentary provides an invaluable introduction to one of Euripides' less well-known plays and describes the enormous value of the text for our understanding of Athenian drama religion and society. Heraclidae is one of Euripides' "alphabetical" plays preserved exclusively in a Laurentian manuscript and therefore not selected in antiquity. Not even in modern times despite the excellent commentaries of Elmsley 1821 and Pearson 1907 and powerful articles by Wilamwitz has the play been given the prominence it deserves. This edition interprets the play in a wide cultural setting considering unorthodox aspects of the structure of the drama but placing particular emphasis on the cults and myths of Heracles in Attica on his apotheosis and marriage on his association with the young and most of all on the two most striking rituals in the play: the voluntary self-sacrifice of the daughter of Heracles and the conversion of Eurystheus from an enemy of Athens to a hero whose dead body will protect the city-state. The text is James Diggle's Oxford Classical Texts 1984. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

EURIPIDES: HECUBA With Introduction Translation and Commentary
Aris & Phillips. Very Good. 1991. Softcover. 0856682373 . Foxing to textblock. Creasing to spine. ; The Plays of Euripides; 224 pages; Hecuba in slavery after Troy's fall fails to dissuade Odysseus whose life she once saved from sacrificing her daughter to honour his dead friend Achilles; but the girl dies proudly true to her royal blood in surmounting degradation. Then Hecuba learns of her sons' treacherous murder by a former ally; out of her terrible loss comes determination for revenge which she claims as a right but how just is her horrific cruelty How credible against her earlier characterisation The play has striking effects: the ghost of the murdered son and his murderer subsequently blinded; poignant lyricism; vivid narratives; above all a careful pattern of scenes demonstrating the equivocal power of 'Persuasion man's only sovereign' v.816. Hecuba is both a study of resilience and weakness and a typically Euripidean comment on the uncertain even collapsing values of his time. Text with facing translation commentary and notes. THE EPIC SUCCESSORS OF VIRGIL A Study in the Dynamics of a Tradition
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1993. Softcover. 052142562X . Minor foxing to textblock. ; Roman Literature and its Contexts; 144 pages; This book is a critically sophisticated introduction to the epic tradition of the early Roman empire specifically the epic poems of Ovid Lucan Statius Valerius Flaccus and Silius Italicus. It explores the use that they all make of the great Augustan epic of Virgil the Aeneid. Instead of being feeble imitations of the great classic a common critical viewpoint these poems are shown to be dynamic works that use the Virgilian model creatively to reflect the moral and political issues of their own day. All Latin is translated. . Cambridge University Press paperback

LATIN WORD ORDER Structured Meaning and Information
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 0195181689 . Light foxing to textblock. TLS review clipping tipped in. Minor creasing to lower section of DJ. ; Word order is not a subject anyone reading Latin can afford to ignore: apart from anything else word order is what gets one from disjoint sentences to coherent text. Reading a paragraph of Latin without attention to the word order entails losing access to a whole dimension of meaning or at best using inferential procedures to guess at what is actually overtly encoded in the syntax. This book begins by introducing the reader to the linguistic concepts formalism and analytical techniques necessary for the study of Latin word order. It then proceeds to present and analyze a representative selection of data in sufficient detail for the reader to develop both an intuitive grasp of the often rather subtle principles controlling Latin word order and a theoretically grounded understanding of the system that underlies it. Combining the rich empirical documentation of traditional philological approaches with the deeper theoretical insight of modern linguistics this work aims to reduce the intricate surface patterns of Latin word order to a simple and general crosscategorial system of syntactic structure which translates more or less directly into constituents of pragmatic and semantic meaning. ; 9.2 X 6.4 X 1.5 inches; 656 pages .
