Burkert Walter & John Raffan translator
GREEK RELIGION
Harvard University Press. Very Good. 2000. Softcover. 0674362810 . Faint crease to front wrap. Else very minor shelfwear. ; 512 pages; In this book Walter Burkert the most eminent living historian of ancient Greek religion has produced the standard work for our time on that subject. First published in German in 1977 it has now been translated into English with the assistance of the author himself. A clearly structured and readable survey for students and scholars it will be welcomed as the best modern account of any polytheistic religious system. Burkert draws on archaeological discoveries insights from other disciplines and inscriptions in Linear B to reconstruct the practices and beliefs of the Minoan-Mycenaean age. The major part of his book is devoted to the archaic and classical epochs. He describes the various rituals of sacrifice and libation and explains Greek beliefs about purification. He investigates the inspiration behind the great temples at Olympia Delphi Delos and the Acropolis - discussing the priesthood sanctuary and oracles. Considerable attention is given to the individual gods the position of the heroes and beliefs about the afterlife. The different festivals are used to illuminate the place of religion in the society of the city-state. The mystery cults at Eleusis and among the followers of Bacchus and Orpheus are also set in that context. The book concludes with an assessment of the great classical philosophers' attitudes to religion. Insofar as possible Burkert lets the evidence -- from literature and legend vase paintings and archaeology -- speak for itself; he elucidates the controversies surrounding its interpretation without glossing over the enigmas that remain. Throughout the notes updated for the English-language edition afford a wealth of further references as the text builds up its coherent picture of what is known of the religion of ancient Greece. . FURTHER VOICES IN VERGIL'S AENEID
Oxford Clarendon Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1987. First Edition. Hardcover. 019814461X . Light pencilling to about 10 pages with pencil notes to rear blank endpaper. Light bumping to upper corners of boards. Else minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; 0.61 x 8.46 x 5.5 Inches; 264 pages; The Aeneid can strike one as a relatively conventional epic an objective heroic tale of Rome's beginnings. Vergil designed it so that it might read in this way. This is one epic `voice' that he wished us to hear. But there are `further voices' and these may be disturbing even shocking as they add to comment upon question and occasionally subvert the implications of the epic voice. This is a detailed examination of Vergil's method of intruding such further voices. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

Baraz Yelena
A WRITTEN REPUBLIC Cicero's Philosophical Politics
Princeton University Press. Very Good in Fine dust jacket. 2012. Hardcover. 0691153329 . Minor pencil notes by R. E. Fantham. Ffep has note from author : "a gift from Yelena: Nov. 9 2012". Else fine. ; In the 40s BCE during his forced retirement from politics under Caesar's dictatorship Cicero turned to philosophy producing a massive and important body of work. As he was acutely aware this was an unusual undertaking for a Roman statesman because Romans were often hostile to philosophy perceiving it as foreign and incompatible with fulfilling one's duty as a citizen. How then are we to understand Cicero's decision to pursue philosophy in the context of the political intellectual and cultural life of the late Roman republic In A Written Republic Yelena Baraz takes up this question and makes the case that philosophy for Cicero was not a retreat from politics but a continuation of politics by other means an alternative way of living a political life and serving the state under newly restricted conditions. Baraz examines the rhetorical battle that Cicero stages in his philosophical prefaces--a battle between the forces that would oppose or support his project. He presents his philosophy as intimately connected to the new political circumstances and his exclusion from politics. His goal--to benefit the state by providing new moral resources for the Roman elite--was traditional even if his method of translating Greek philosophical knowledge into Latin and combining Greek sources with Roman heritage was unorthodox. ; 9.1 X 6.4 X 1.0 inches; 272 pages . THE CHILD AND THE HERO Coming of Age in Catullus and Vergil
University of Michigan Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0472104608 . Former owner's blindstamp to ffep. Else book is fine. ; Many generations of readers have noticed the prominence given to children and to heroes--usually young men--in the poems of Vergil and his contemporary Catullus. But until now it has not always been clear why Vergil and Catullus employ these characters or what readers are to make of these sometimes odd figures. In The Child and the Hero: Coming of Age in Catullus and Vergil Mark Petrini thoughtfully explores this group of characters and helps illuminate their places in the poems. After offering a brief introduction describing the world in which such characters find themselves the author studies in greater detail the key figures of Pallas Nisus and Euryalus and Iulus--in whom the future of Rome lies. Readers learn the links between these figures and literary characters who come before and after and the author thus helps the reader perceive the many levels on which Vergilian and Catullan poems resonate. ; 9.6 X 6.4 X 0.7 inches; 152 pages . HOMER: THE ILIAD
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1993. Softcover. 0521313023 . Very light shelfwear. ; Landmarks of World Literature; 126 pages; Michael Silk's volume offers a prevalent assessment of The Iliad both for the Homeric specialist and general reader. His starting point is the relationship between Homer's world the eighth century BC and the remote heroic age in which the events of the punitive Greek expedition against Troy were set. He deals with the poem's historical context composition and extensive influence and stresses the coherence and inter-relations of such apparently separate aspects of the poem as its style character-portrayal and ideology. .
