THE HELLENISTIC AGE FROM THE BATTLE OF IPSOS TO THE DEATH OF KLEOPATRA VII Translated Documents of Greek and Rome Volume 3
Cambridge University Press. Good with no dust jacket. 1985. Hardcover. 0521236916 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. Bumping to top of boards near spine. ; Valuable documentary material is buried in inscriptions and papyri and in the works of Greek and Roman grammarians and scholars and less well known historians and literary figures of whose writings only isolated quotations have been preserved. Translated Documents of Greece and Rome has been planned to provide above all primary source material for the study of the classical world. It makes important historical documents available in English to scholars and students of classical history. The format of the translations is remarkable in attempting to reproduce faithfully the textual difficulties and uncertainties inherent in the documents so that the reader without a knowledge of classical languages can assess the reliability of the various readings and interpretations. The author"s purpose in compiling this book is to help the teaching of Hellenistic history ; Translated Documents of Greece and Rome 3; Vol. 3; 196 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears now protected in mylar. Light browning to DJ. DJ is price-clipped. ; This book is written in the belief that a proper understanding of Greek civilization in antiquity requires some knowledge of its background of seafaring. A knowledge of nautical practice is required for an understanding of some passages of Greek poetry and prose writing and for a correct interpretation of numerous historical events. This is an attempt at a thorough study of the evidence both literary and archaeological. Modern reference books tend to repeat the misconceptions of nineteenth-century scholars. In contrast Mr Morrison and Mr Williams have written a scholarly and scientific study of the subject. They collect in this volume evidence for Greek oared ships between 900 and 322 BC. The book is primarily a catalogue of decorated pottery and quotations from literature and from naval inventories. The pottery is illustrated by diagrams and plates; and the quotations are given in full. ; 356 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Light lifting of corners. ; Revised Paperback Edition. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 1.11 x 8.74 x 5.7 Inches; 424 pages; The era of Diocletan and Constantine is a significant period for the Roman empire with far-reaching administrative changes that established the structure of government for three hundred years - a time when the Christian church passed from persecution to imperial favour. It is also a complex period of co-operation and rivalry between a number of co-emperors the result of Diocletian's experiment of government by four rulers the tetrarchs. This book examines imperial government at this crucial but often neglected period of transition through a study of the the pronouncement that the emperors and their officials produced drawing together material from a wide variety of sources: the law codes Christian authors inscritpions and papyri. The study covers the format composition and promulgation of documents and includes chronological catalogues of imperial letters and edicts as well as extended discussions of the Gregorian and Hermogenian Codes and the ambitious Prices Edict. Much of this has had little detailed coverage in English before. There is also a chapter that elucidates the relative powers of the members of the imperial college. Finally Dr Corcoran assesses how effectively the machinery of government really matched the ambitions of the emperors. . Oxford University Press paperback

ORAL TRADITION AND WRITTEN RECORDS IN CLASSICAL ATHENS
Cambridge University Press. Near Fine. 1992. Softcover. 0521425182 . Very minor shelfwear else Fine. ; Despite its written literature ancient Greece was in many ways an oral society. This is the first serious attempt to study the implications of this view. Dr Thomas stresses the coexistence of literacy and oral tradition in Greece and examines their character and interaction. Concentrating on the plentiful evidence from Classical Athens she shows how the use of writing developed only gradually and under the influence of the previous oral communication. Drawing on anthropological discussion the author isolates different types of Athenian oral tradition building up a picture of Athens' traditions about its past and examining why they changed and disappeared. This study provides crucial insights into the methods and achievements of the Greek historians. It also has major implications for the interpretation of ancient literacy. ; Cambridge Studies in Oral and Literate Culture; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 321 pages . Cambridge University Press paperback

Former classics scholar's name on ffep Peter Fraser. ; No historian of ancient Rome in this century has had a greater influence on historical research or won greater international acclaim than Sir Ronald Syme 1903-89. His outstanding position was due mainly to his first two books The Roman Revolution which appeared in 1939 and Tacitus two volumes 1958 - although he went on to produce many more monographs and seven volumes of his Roman Papers have so far appeared. The long gap between his first two books is partly explained by the war which took him on official duties to Belgrade and Ankara and he spent the years 1943-5 at Istanbul as Professor of Classical Philology. It was known that in spite of the war Syme had continued to write in these years in particular 'Strabonia' investigations into the famous ancient Geography composed by Strabo a native of Asia Minor in the time of Augustus. After Syme's death the manuscript was discovered among his papers: he had not quite completed the work but what he had written with almost complete annotation represents a substantial and fascinating study of the historical geography of Anatolia in the Hellenistic and early Roman period. Syme ruthlessly dissects the often incoherent and inconsistent text of Strabo at the same time providing rich detail on client kings Roman generals and emperors writers and travellers. Above all he shows unequalled ability to understand the landscape and settlement of Anatolia. ; 424 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover

FEEDING THE ROMAN ARMY The Archaeology of Production and Supply in NW Europe
Oxbow Books. Fine. 2008. Softcover. 1842173235 . These ten papers from two Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference 2007 sessions bring together a growing body of new archaeological evidence in an attempt to reconsider the way in which the Roman army was provisioned. Clearly the adequate supply of food was essential to the success of the Roman military. But what was the nature of those supply networks Did the army rely on imperial supply lines from the continent as certainly appears to be the case for some commodities or were provisions requisitioned from local agricultural communities If the latter was the case was unsustainable pressure placed on such resources and how did local communities respond Alternatively did the early stages of conquest include not only the development of a military infrastructure but also an effective supply-chain network based on contracts Beyond the initial stages of conquest how were provisioning arrangements maintained in the longer term did supply chains remain static or did they change over time and if so what precipitated those changes Addressing such questions is critical if we are to understand the nature of Roman conquest and the extent of interaction between indigenous communities and the Roman army. Case studies come from Roman Britain Alchester Cheshire Dorset France the Netherlands and the Rhine Delta looking at evidence from animal products military settlements the size of cattle horses pottery and salt. The editors also provide a review of current research and suggest a future agenda for economic and environmental research. ; 160 pages . Oxbow Books paperback

In a remarkable work of interpretive history Fergus Millar shows us this world as it was forged into the Roman provinces of Syria Judaea Arabia and Mesopotamia. His book conveys the magnificent sweep of history as well as the rich diversity of peoples religions and languages that intermingle in the Roman Near East. Against this complex backdrop Millar explores questions of cultural and religious identity and ethnicity--as aspects of daily life in the classical world and as part of the larger issues they raise. As Millar traces the advance of Roman control he gives a lucid picture of Rome's policies and governance over its far-flung empire. He introduces us to major regions of the area and their contrasting communities bringing out the different strands of culture communal identity language and religious belief in each. The Roman Near East makes it possible to see rabbinic Judaism early Christianity and eventually the origins of Islam against the matrix of societies in which they were formed. Millar's evidence permits us to assess whether the Near East is best seen as a regional variant of Graeco-Roman culture or as in some true sense oriental. FINAL JUDGMENTS Duty and Emotion in Roman Wills 200 B.C.-A.D.
University of California Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1991. Hardcover. 0520071034 . Freed from the familial and social obligations incumbent on the living the Roman testator could craft his will to be a literal "last judgment" on family friends and society. The Romans were fascinated by the contents of wills believing the will to be a mirror of the testator's true character and opinions. The wills offer us a unique view of the individual Roman testator's world. Just as classicists ancient historians and legal historians will find a mine of information here the general reader will be fascinated by the book's lively recounting of last testaments. Who were the testators and what were their motives Why do family kin servants friends and community all figure in the will and how are they treated What sort of afterlife did the Romans anticipate By examining wills the book sets several issues in a new light offering new interpretations of or new insights into subjects as diverse as captatio inheritance- seeking the structure of the Roman family the manumission of slaves public philanthropy the afterlife and the relation of subject to emperor. Champlin's principal argument is that a strongly felt "duty of testacy" informed and guided most Romans a duty to reward or punish all who were important to them a duty which led them to write their wills early in life and to revise them frequently. ; 228 pages .
