THE POLITICS OF PLUNDER Aitolians and Their Koinon in the Early Hellenistic Era 279-217 B. C.
University of California Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0520201876 . Light shelfwear to DJ. ; Between 279 and 229 B. C. the Aitolian koinon a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition which views them as backward semi-barbarous brigands. The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography epigraphy and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture. Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political economic and social history of the Hellenistic Era this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories particularly federalism. ; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 2.72 x 9.31 x 7.94 Inches; 339 pages . THE LIMITS OF EMPIRE The Roman Army in the East
Clarendon Press. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0198148917 . Light shelfwear to DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; For more than seven centuries most of the Near East was part of the Roman empire. Yet no work exists which explores the means by which an ancient power originating in the western Mediterranean could control such a vast and distant region. What was the impact of the army presence on the population of the provinces How did Rome respond to the challenge posed by the desert and its nomadic population Isaac here offers answers to these questions in the first comprehensive treatment of the Roman military presence in the Near East. Using both well-known and neglected sources he reassesses the means by which Rome achieved and maintained its control over the region. His study now revised and updated to reflect recent research findings casts new light on an important issue which has far-reaching implications for the understanding of ancient and modern imperialism. ; 506 pages . THE DEATH OF CLASSICAL PAGANISM
Geoffrey Chapman Publishers. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1976. Hardcover. 0225660970 . Shelfwear book and dustjacket. Rounding to top of spine. Light pencil underlining on a few pages. ; It is a study of the Roman world in the first five centuries after Christ and it tells the story of the historically improbable oddity of how a religious cult centered on an obscure construction worker living in the backwaters of a great Empire supplants the sophisticated Classical European religious worldview that had been embraced for thousands of years. Of particular interest to me was the story of Julian the Apostate the last Roman emperor to openly embrace paganism. The author generously devotes an entire chapter to this remarkable personage. Although Julian was a nephew of Emperor Constantine and was raised as a Christian he renounced the "new" religion when he became an adult and embraced the gods of his fathers. Because Julian ruled the Empire for a scant three years he had insufficient time to turn back the tide of religious history and we are left to wonder how things might have been different if he had ruled for 30 years instead. The author's sympathetic portrayal of this little-known Emperor lent a touching air of wistfulness to the sad story of the clash of Christianity with Paganism. ; 280 pages . STYLE AND SOCIETY IN DARK AGE GREECE The Changing Face of a Pre-literate Society 1100-700 BC
Cambridge University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1991. Hardcover. 0521373832 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; In this innovative study James Whitley examines the relationship between the development of pot style and social changes in the Dark Age of Greece 1100-700 BC. He focuses on Athens where the Protogeometric and Geometric styles first appeared. He considers pot shape and painted decoration primarily in relation to the other relevant features - metal artefacts grave architecture funerary rites and the age and sex of the deceased - and also takes into account different contexts in which these shapes and decorations appear. A computer analysis of grave assemblages supports his view that pot style is an integral part of the collective representations of Early Athenian society. It is a lens through which we can focus on the changing social circumstances of Dark Age Greece. Dr Whitley's approach to the study of style challenges many of the assumptions which have underpinned more traditional studies of Early Greek art. ; New Studies in Archaeology; 10.25 x 1 x 7.5 Inches; 245 pages . EROS IN MOURNING From Homer to Lacan
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0801849233 . Dustjacket has light rubbing. ; Eros in Mourning begins with a reading of the Iliad that shows how Homer not yet influenced by the ideology of transcendence analyzes the structure of unassuageable mourning in a way that is as up-to-date as the latest poststructuralism. Then in readings of Dante Hamlet La Princess de Clves Heart of Darkness and Lacan Staten depicts the "thanato-erotic" hysteria that is set off by the specter of the dead and decomposing body that is also the body of sexual love and which in the "transcendentalizing" tradition is more female than male.
