A HITTITE GLOSSARY Words of Known or Conjectured Meaning with Sumerian and Akkadian Words Occuring in Hittite Texts,
Former owner's name in pen to ffep. Light rubbing to boards. Spine is heavily spotted and discolored. ; The Hittite language is the dead language once spoken by the Hittites, a people who once created an empire centered on ancient Hattusa (modern Bogazköy) in north-central Anatolia (modern Turkey). The language was used from approximately 1600 BC (and probably before) to 1100 BC. There is some attestation that Hittite and related languages were still spoken for a few hundred years after that. Hittite is one of the earliest attested Indo-European languages, although marked differences in its structure and phonology have led some philologists to argue that it should be classified as a sister language to the Indo-European languages, rather than a daughter language. ; William Dwight Whitney Linguistic Series; 192 pages

Creasing to top corners. Old price sticker to front wrap. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; Ann Arbor Paperbacks; 119 pages; Examining the revolution wrought by Catullus in Latin poetry, this volume encapsulates the way in which principles of modern literary criticism could be applied to classical poetry, without ditching the sound philological scholarship of the classical tradition. In its day this book led the way in showing the philogically trained student how to be a critic; equally it can show the critically trained student the importance of a sound philogical base today

THE LANGUAGE OF WORD MEANING
Upper corners very lightly bumped. Signed by Julius Moravcsik (one of the contributors) on titlepage. Else Fine. ; Xvi, 387pp. This volume is a collection of original contributions that address the problem of words and their meaning. This represents a still difficult and controversial area within various disciplines: linguistics, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. Although all of these disciplines have to tackle the issue, so far there is no overarching methodology agreed upon by researchers. The aim of the volume is to provide answers based on empirical linguistics methods that are relevant across all the disciplines and provide a bridge among researchers looking at word meaning from different angles. ; Studies in Natural Language Processing; 387 pages; Signed by Contributor

THOUGHT AND LANGUAGE
Very light shelfwear to book and DJ. ; Ix, 283pp. In this examination of the bases of thought and language, Professor Julius Moravcsik explores recent approaches to these topics and discusses the philosophical assumptions behind theories of language. He puts forward a new theory of meaning that is also a proposal about human concepts: viewing meanings as explanatory schemata and interpreting human cognition as primarily explanation-seeking, rather than information processing. This view of cognition, Professor Moravcsik argues, need not commit itself to either dualism or materialism. He defends the Platonic assumptions of his proposal, showing them to be no less "scientific" than current fashionable alternatives. Professor Moravcsik explores new ways of philosophizing that differ from analytic philosophy and its continental alternatives, and indicates how philosophers today can construct proposals about thought and language that have both conceptual and empirical import. This book should be of interest to students and teachers of philosophy of language and philosophy of mind, and advanced students of cognitive science and linguistics. ; 283 pages

ANTIPHON & ANDOCIDES
Spine slightly sunned else book is fine. ; Xxvii, 174pp. This volume contains the works of the two earliest surviving orators, Antiphon and Andocides. His six surviving works all concern homicide cases. Andocides (ca. 440-390) was involved in two religious scandals—the mutilation of the Herms (busts of Hermes) and the revelation of the Eleusinian Mysteries—on the eve of the fateful Athenian expedition to Sicily in 415. GUARDIANS OF LANGUAGE The Grammarian and Society in Late Antiquity
Lower corners bumped else book has minor shelfwear. DJ has light edgewear with a couple of chips and light creasing. ; What did it mean to be a professional teacher in the prestigious "liberal schools"—the schools of grammar and rhetoric—in late antiquity? How can we account for the abiding prestige of these schools, which remained substantially unchanged in their methods and standing despite the political and religious changes that had taken place around them? The grammarian was a pivotal figure in the lives of the educated upper classes of late antiquity. Introducing his students to correct language and to the literature esteemed by long tradition, he began the education that confirmed his students' standing in a narrowly defined elite. His profession thus contributed to the social as well as cultural continuity of the Empire. The grammarian received honor—and criticism; the profession gave the grammarian a firm sense of cultural authority but also placed him in a position of genteel subordination within the elite. Robert A. Kaster provides the first thorough study of the place and function of these important but ambiguous figures. He also gives a detailed prosopography of the grammarians, and of the other "teachers of letters" below the level of rhetoric, from the middle of the third through the middle of the sixth century, which will provide a valuable research tool for other students of late-antique education. ; 524 pages
