‎Lange, Johann Joachim‎

‎The Late Mr. Lang's Dialogues Translated Out of the French and Italian Tongues into the English with the Words and Phrases of Every Dialogue for the Advantage of Young Scholars by John Justin Herwig provenance: Mifflintown Pa.‎

‎Nurembergh Nürnberg: Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib 1763. Paperback. Poor. 78 p. incomplete probably of 96 p.; 17 cm. Signatures: A-E8 -E8 8vo. The remains of a contemporary wrapper are attached along the spine but lacking otherwise. The remaining paper cover is lined with part of a page of a German-language book. Several ink notations in the lower margins indicating that this belonged to David Beidleman of Mifflin Town Mifflintown Pa. A few ink corrections of errors. A translation of Verbesserte und Erleichterte Lateinische Grammatica by Johann Joachim Lange 1670-1744 a German Protestant theologian. The year prior to this publication the same printer Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib had issued a 96-page French edition of the work: Dialogues de Feu Monsieur Lang Traduits du Latin Avec les Mots et Phrases de Chaque Dialogue: pour l'Usage des Jeunes Gens. In 1769 an English translation was published in London by Edward and Charles Dilly under the title: Easy and Pleasant Latin Conversations or One Hundred and Forty-four Dialogues on Common Subjects Morals and the First Part of the Roman History. The edition offered here was intended to help German speakers learn English. Unfortunately the translator John Justin Herwig had a less than perfect understanding of English. This may explain the scarcity of the item only one copy is listed on Worldcat with no physical description. The dialogues are grouped by "decades" or groups of 10 dialogues each. The final leaf of signature E is lacking and the text ends at the beginning of the 10th dialogue in the ninth decade the 9th group of 10. Presumably a final signature is also lacking which would have brought the page total to 96 which agrees with the size of the French edition issued one year earlier by the same printer. Extremely scarce and unusual 18th-century work. In Poor Condition: incomplete as described above; old soiling and dampstaining; stitching is going. Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib paperback‎

‎Lavisse, Ernest, Editor‎

‎Histoire Générale du IVe Siècle a Nos Jours: Tome XII Le Monde; Ouvrage public sous la direction de MM. Ernest Lavisse et Alfred Rambaud 2 volumes‎

‎Paris: Librairie Armand Colin 1904. Hardcover. Very Good -. Deuxième Édition. Bound in two volumes: vol. 1: 8 478 p.; vol. 2: 479-934 2 p.; 26 cm. Red morocco over spines; marbled paper over boards. Front fixed endpapers bear small binder's label: Douron Relieur Grenoble. Philip Bayard 1872-1911 was descended from a long line of political and financial leaders in Philadelphia and Delaware -- he was the son grandson brother and nephew of numerous prominent Bayards. From 1906 or earlier to 1908 he served as American Vice Consul General in Morocco where he probably acquired this and a number of other works in French which he marked with this distinctive stamp combining the Roman and Arabic alphabets. Tragically he died in 1911 having jumped or fallen from the third-floor window of a hospital in Washington D.C. These volumes comprise the 12th and final volume of this important history of France produced under the directon of French historians Ernest Lavisse and Alfred Rambaud. In Very Good- Condition: corners and joints are rubbed; front joint of volume two has separated but hinge is solid; spines and upper section of back cover of vol. 1 and of front cover of vol. 2 are sunned; pages are clean and bright. ‎Paris: A. Lahure Imprimeur-Éditeur 1898. Paperback. Good. 4 172 6 p.: 24 leaves of tissue-guarded collotype plates many in-text drawings; 34 cm. Original brown paper covers with "Detaille" printed in black on the front cover. Colophon states: "Achevé d'imprimer le 30 Novembre 1897." Title page printed in red and black. This type of c. 1900 French publisher's insubstantial binding was meant to be replaced when the purchaser took the book to a bookbinder. It was not made to last for over a century and this one shows the expected signs of wear most significantly the loss of most of the paper over the spine and the resulting separation of the sections of the book. The volume is complete however with all 24 leaves of plates. In Good Condition with the binding as described: cover is soiled; fore-edges of some leaves slightly soiled and in a few cases slightly chipped; otherwise clean and bright. A.
