Complete with half-title; wanting one blank preliminary.Louis-Antoine Caraccioli (1723-1803) was a prolific writer of poetry, history, fiction and biography. Born in Paris, he served as colonel to Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, and so travelled widely throughout Europe. Despite close ties to both Louis XV and Louis XVI he managed to survive the Revolution, though eventually he died in penury. The broad thematic range of his works makes him interesting to scholars of manners and many other subjects. He is best known among bibliophiles for two publications printed with coloured inks: Le livre de quatre couleurs (1757) and Le livre à la mode (1759) But the full list of his works is much longer ('trop fécond' complains the ungenerous Nouvelle Biographie Générale), and many of them are of interest. The present work was first published in Paris by Nyon earlier in the same year. It remained popular throughout the eighteenth century and was translated into English as 'The Language of Reason' in 1802. This edition, the first non-French issue, is scarce.

Substantial archive of documents concerning the publication and production of several notable literary works and theatrical plays by Peter Ulrich Weiss, including correspondence, draft agreements, contracts signed with leading publishers and producers, as well as some programmes and peer reviews, being the working files of his New York agent, Joan Daves. Together with 3 LP record box sets of the first and complete Broadway original cast music recording for the Marat/Sade play. Octavo and Folio documents and letters, ranging in size and number of pages, some signed in the original. Most are in English; some are in German; the lot neatly contained in four ring binders. The vast majority of the documents date to the 1960s, with a scant few being later including a letter regarding a special television production in 1979 with NBC. Occasional wear to extremities, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved, clean and bright. A generous and comprehensive archive chronicling the work and partnership of a leading literary agent in the rise of German-American publishing, and one of her notable German writers. Provenance: From the desk of Weiss' literary agent for the US, Joan Daves. Joan Daves (1919-1997) was a leading literary agent with her own agency in New York, whose client list boasts six Nobel Prize winners including Martin Luther King, Jr. Daves had a profound effect on the very existence of German literature in America. Born Liselotte Davidson in Berlin, she escaped Nazi Germany by fleeing to Paris and England before emigrating to the United States in 1940. Her agency, established in 1948, handled the original works of several American authors. She handled Martin Luther King, Jr.'s literary property from 1957 until her death. Of great emphasis with her firm was the representation of several major German publishers, such as Suhrkamp, Piper, S. Fischer Verlag and others. It was the prime time of German writers such as Peter Weiss, Uwe Johnson, Max Frisch, Heinar Kipphardt, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and Hermann Hesse. In the mid-1960s, communication with German publishers was quite different from today. A shipment of galleys was prepared with a 'by sea mail' label. When the New York Times printed the date and time the next ship would leave the harbor, delivery of the parcels of documents to that specific ship was requested. Peter Ulrich Weiss (1916-1982) was a German author, playwright, and experimental filmmaker, who gained celebrity fame on Broadway in the 1960s. He is particularly known for his plays "Marat/Sade" of 1963/65 which is largely represented in the present archive and which was enormously successful, for "The Investigation" of 1965, and for his later novel "The Aesthetics of Resistance" (1971-81). In the 1960s Weiss also embraced and promoted politically controversial groups, standing for revolutionary Cuba, standing against US intervention in Vietnam, and joining Sweden's eurocommunist party. This a monthly issue of an obscure and rare Geographical publication issued in Weimar/ Germany in the late 1700's and early 1800's named 'Geographische Ephemeriden.' It contains a large 50 page report about New Georgia which today is part of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. In this report the author explores the history, fauna, flora and people of the islands and draws on accounts by John Hunter, Bougainville, Carteret, Labillardiere and others who visited them. The report is accompanied by a portrait of Captain John Hunter as well a fold-out map measuring 250 mm x 190 mm. A very early report and map on the Solomon Islands and very rare.

Rare pamphlet. Author's Presentation Copy. 17 pages. Text is in German. Very Good Condition in original sage wrappers, titled to front. Containing the author's geological speech on the formation and features of the great canyons in the Colorado plateau, and with mention of Major John Wesley Powell, who in 1869, led the first expedition down the Grand Canyon. Carl Hermann Credner (1841 - 1913), was a German earth scientist. In 1870 he was appointed professor of geology in the University of Leipzig, and in 1872 director of the Geological Survey of Saxony. He is author of numerous publications on the geology of Saxony, and of an important work, "Elemente der Geologic". He also wrote memoirs on Saurians and Labyrinthodonts. The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata, and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province. The Grand Canyon is unmatched throughout the world for the vistas it offers to visitors on the rim. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.

These are the original pages printed in 1798, the same year as Vancouver's book, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal. Contains a thorough contemporary review of Captain Vancouver's historic scarce 1798 title 'A Voyage of Discovery' with comments on Tahiti, Hawaii, and the Northwest coast. Of further interest in this rare volume is an early notice of Malespina's Spanish voyage to the North West Coast, which had returned to Spain in 1794, but as was customary, details were not released to the public. The expedition had explicitly scientific goals, and the crew consisted of some of the period's leading scientists. Data collected during the expedition surpassed that of Cook, but due to changed political circumstances in Spain, Malaspina was jailed upon his return. The reports and collections were seized and prohibited from publication. The expedition and its findings remained obscure and nearly unstudied by historians until the late 20th century. While exploring along the Strait of Georgia, Captain Vancouver's crew encountered ships from the Malespina expedition under the command of Dionisio Galiano and Cayetano Valdes y Flores. Although the interaction was friendly, it was not until Vancouver met Commander Bodega y Quadra at Friendly Cove, in Nootka Sound, that he asserted England's claims. The two men established friendly working terms, but were unable to agree on how the two countries would settle their respective positions.

Middleton and Dobbs Controversy - Scarce Letters

A scarce publication comprising two letters written by Christopher Middleton while at his quarters at Churchill, on the shore of Hudson Bay, dated June 1741 and September 1741 respectively, illuminating details of the long-standing disagreement between Middleton and Dobbs. Christopher Middleton (late 1600s-1770), English naval officer and navigator, was appointed on 5 March 1741 to the command of the Royal Navy's sloop 'Furnace'. He was encouraged by the theories of Arthur Dobbs who was convinced that tide differences pointed to the Passage's entry being near Wager Bay. In May 1741 he left England in the Furnace, accompanied by a smaller vessel, the purchased pink HMS Discovery under the command of Commander William Moor, and sailed to North America in search of a Northwest Passage to the East Indies. He spent the winter at the entrance of the Churchill River in Hudson Bay, then proceeded as far north as Repulse Bay, but was prevented by extreme ice conditions from going any further. Middleton returned to England in 1742, where he was presented with the Copley Medal and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society to whom he presented a paper on "The extraordinary degrees and surprising effects of Cold in Hudson's Bay". Dobbs however accused Middleton of falsification, and the two engaged in a pamphlet controversy for years. In 1744 Dobbs produced 'An Account of the Countries Adjoining to Hudson’s Bay,' which extolled the virtues of the region and criticized the HBC for its stewardship of it. The revered German physician, explorer and zoologist, travelled from 1802 to 1806 travelled extensively in southern Africa, and whom was hired as the personal physician to the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. This scarce firsthand preliminary account pre-dates and provides insight into the author's book, which would be published in 1811, 'Reisen im südlichen Afrika in den Jahren 1803, 1804, 1805 und 1806.' This issue contains a contemporary analysis of the first German translation, by Karl Ludwig Methusalen Müller, of the first edition of Claude Robin's now classic French title , 'Voyages dans l'intérieur de la Louisiane, de la Floride occidentale, et dans les isles de la Martinique et de Saint-Domingue, pendant les années 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805 et 1806.' In itself a fascinating essay contemporary to slave revolts and the Louisiana Purchase, including statistics on slavery, passages are drawn from both the French and German editions, making this a unique item to pair with the collector's volume. Claude C. Robin traveled with his son in Louisiana and in the Caribbean from 1802 to 1806, recording his observations of the rebellion and the subsequent settlement of the refugees in Louisiana. In his 3 volume work, he gave an excellent account of Louisiana's western interior and of Spanish Texas, including natural history and agriculture, the French inhabitants of the area, Louisiana's new American government, geographical delineations, conflicts with Spain, and other civil and political issues. The Louisiana Purchase (Vente de la Louisiane) was the acquisition by the United States of America of 828,800 square miles of the French territory Louisiane in 1803. Robin was present at ceremonies turning Louisiana over to the United States, both in New Orleans and in Natchitoches. He published his account in 1807. The subsequent German translation by Müller, discussed here, was published in 1808. These are the original pages printed in 1809, and NOT a reprint. The region was once part of the Kingdom of Sicily, then the Kingdom of Naples, and at the time of this publication, had recently fallen under the reign of the French. French control endured from 1806-1815, resulting in the abolition of feudalism and the reformation of the justice system. 1810 Island of Elba - French Law and Statistic

This issue contains a German translation of an official French document concerning laws imposed by the King of France during his reign over Elba island, when it was divided into only 7 municipalities. With brief notes on the structure of the criminal court or tribunal, and featuring a poulation chart which includes Portoferraio, Marciana, Rio, and Porto-Longone Capoliveri. In 1802 the island had become a French possession, and its economy flourished. Following the Treaty of Fontainebleau, French emperor Napoleon I was exiled to Elba after his forced abdication in 1814 and arrived at Portoferraio on May 3, 1814 to begin his exile there. He was allowed to keep a personal guard of six hundred men. Although he was nominally sovereign of Elba, the island was watched (more or less) by British naval patrols.
