Spanish American War Camp Thomas Frank Ellsworth
1898 Spanish American War letter from Frank Ellsworth of St. James Minnesota written at Camp Thomas Lytle Georgia to his mother. Ellsworth writes about playing music on his guitar competing for a Corporal position and general camp life
Camp Thomas Lytle Georgia: n.p. 1898. Letter. Very good. Five page letter written on lined paper 9" x 6" with an addressed envelope. Contents are written on the front sides of the paper only. Two folds to each page. Paper is clean and in very good condition. A few of the words are not legible. Transcribed below. Patriotic envelope from Camp George H. Thomas Chickamauga Park Lytle Georgia is addressed to Mrs. L. M. Ellsworth St James Minn. It is postmarked with a 2c stamp. The letter is transcribed as written as best as possible: Camp Thomas Lytle Ga June 26-1898 Dear Mother Have rec'd both drafts for $5.00. the first was already a dollar more than it before I received the second as I had already gone to Lookout Mountain and Chatanooga. I am out again or will be as soon as I go Chatanooga and have a new neck put upon my guitar; it is broken and as Henton wants us fellows to play at Col. Gordon's - a fine southern home near camp and then we play around camp for the officers . Rec'd pen with which I am writing and today just finished a letter to Gazette. Ed just told me of a box at the commisaries hurrah! We have just unpacked the box every thing o.k. Its the greatest thing ever happened to me in my life: better than any Christmas present I suppose you know that Doc. Griswold is soon to resign. That leaves me out on corporal. I have looked at my chances and find them very slim. There seems to be a sort of a ring cut and dryed - railroad men - Nixon Van Valkerburg Wagiel and Lobben Running and Korth which get every thing and I am entirely left out. If Griswold does'nt resign before another corporal ship apointment takes place on account of recruits 2 may get something however. The other day I had a pleasant time - Fairweather and I were detailed on guard over a bridge about a mile and our half from camp on a man's farm we only stand on gaurd from 1 to 3 then our relief was off the next day. The scenery was great. We took four meals at the man's house - 25c per meal this was great too - They had a guitar and two daughters. We strolled around and looked the neighboring farms in the after noon there some fine well kept places. In the evening after supper the Lieutenant in comand and we twelve men sat out on the front porch and I played the guitar; then the old man of the house an old rebel talked war. It was one of the most typical days in war I ever expect to spend. Every sunday excepting today Ed and I walked down to Lytle Station where a small town as you know has built up and squander 50c a piece for a good square meal at a first class restaurant. The whole camp is cleering/cheering every thing is worked up. Official - Official notice has just been received by Col Bableter to hold the regiment in readiness to move out any moment for Santiago. I'll have to quit now and get into the xcitement. Your Son Frank. From wikipedia: Franklin Fowler Ellsworth July 10 1879 - December 23 1942 was a Representative from Minnesota; born in St. James Watonwan County Minnesota July 10 1879; attended the grade and high schools; enlisted as a private in Company H Twelfth Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War; attended the law department of the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis; was admitted to the bar in 1901 and commenced practice in St. James; city attorney of St. James in 1904 and 1905; prosecuting attorney of Watonwan County 1905-1909; elected as a Republican to the 64th 65th and 66th congresses March 4 1915 - March 3 1921; was not a candidate for renomination in 1920 having become a gubernatorial candidate; unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Minnesota in 1920 and 1924; moved to Minneapolis Minnesota in 1921 and resumed the practice of his profession; died in Minneapolis December 23 1942; interment in Lakewood Cemetery. At the onset of the Spanish American War the United States had fewer regular troops in the entire United States then Spain had in Cuba. The United States recruited thousands of men to start training for war. The National Military Park the location of the 1863 Battle of Chickamauga was picked as the place for the Regular Army and the new recruits after the Regulars had departed for Cuba. The site was named Camp Thomas after General H. Thomas the Union General hero of the Battle of Chickamauga. The location had a good water supply and was convenient to the Western Atlantic and the Chattanooga Rome and Southern Railroads. Colonel Henry Boynton a veteran of the Battle of Chickamauga was promoted to Brigadier General and began setting up the Camp for the Regulars. The camp included over 7000 regular army soldiers and contained the Twenty-Fifth regiment the Tenth U.S. Cavalry Regiment - a black soldier unit better known as the "buffalo soldiers" and the Ninth Regiment another black unit. By May 14th prior to this letter the Regulars were shipped out to Cuba. In May and June more recruits arrived at Camp Thomas increasing its size. Later that summer the Camp was so overcrowded that sanitation issues led to sickness among several units of men. Later in the fall of 1898 the soldiers were moved out of the polluted Camp. Of approximately 200000 soldiers who enlisted in the spring and summer of 1898 136000 soldiers never left camp summarized from an article in the Georgia Historical Quarterly Winter 1986 by Gregory Dean Chapman. n.p. unknown

Spanish American War: March y Garcia Emilio
BANDO. DON EMILIO MARCH Y GARCIA GENERAL DE DIVISION Y GOBERNADOR MILITAR DE ESTA PLAZA Y PROVINCIA. HAGO SABER: QUE LOS JEFES DE LAS PARTIDAS INSURRECTAS.caption title and beginning of text
Puerto Principe Cuba 1898. Broadside 16 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches. Toned old folds and creases minor edge chipping short closed tear slight fold separations. Very good. A very rare possibly unique surviving example of a Cuban broadside dating from the month after the conclusion of the Spanish- American War. The war ceased with a truce between the United States and Spain on Aug. 12 1898; the official end of the war came a few months later on December 10 when the two parties signed the historic Treaty of Paris. Here on September 10 in the interim between truce and treaty the outgoing Spanish colonial governor of the south-central Cuban city of Puerto Principe present-day Camagüey Emilio March y Garcia calls for reinforcement of the truce agreement that would ensure free and open commercial trade in the region in the face of continuing interference by Cuban insurgents. March y Garcia claims that the Cuban revolutionaries are illegally detaining people interrupting the cattle trade trampling property rights carrying arms in flagrant disregard for the law and more. The ARIZONA REPUBLICAN published an English translation of this proclamation in its Sept. 26 1898 issue. The translation reads: "I hereby inform the commanders of insurgent bands who are pillaging in the neighborhood of this city; who not observing the agreement between the Spanish and American governments with regard to the freedom of commercial relations are illegally detaining the country people; who are obliging the land owners to procure special passes and permits in order to put in order their plantations and will not allow them either to sell their cattle under the absurd pretext that the estates are the property of the nominal Cuban state and that its government alone can distribute and sell them and turn their products to what uses it sees fit thus trampling under foot the rights of property whereas on the part of this government the most absolute liberty in making contracts has been allowed and will be allowed in the future thus demonstrating the respect it has for the rights of all persons within its jurisdiction. I must call to notice with real sorrow that if these towns are suffering almost the horrors of starvation it is the result of the measures adopted by the chiefs of the insurgent bands who are impeding free traffic by forbidding the entry of all kinds of provisions especially cattle into the towns. In view of what I have already explained I consider it necessary to publish the following warnings: Article 1. I repeat my order of August 23 last permitting free entry and exit to all towns of this province subject to my authority and the most absolute freedom of trade between all the inhabitants of the province. Article 2. The prohibition to enter towns with arms remains in force and whoever is found with arms in his possession will be punished in accordance with the laws." Don Emilio Augusto March y Garcia Mesa was a career Spanish military commander who spent at least three stretches of time in Cuba the last as military governor of Puerto Principe during the Spanish defeat in the Spanish- American War. He also served as the colonial governor of Puerto Rico and general captain of Arago the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. The present broadside is exceedingly rare and quite possibly unique with no copies listed in OCLC and no records at auction. unknown

Spanish American War Massachusetts Second Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry
Forty-Nine Photographs of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Most Identified
Massachusetts 1898. The 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers mustered into service in May 1898 and within a month saw significant action in Cuba at the Battle of El Caney. They were one of three volunteer units from Massachusetts to see action on the Santiago Campaign. The regiment was inexperienced - 55% were untrained recruits. The lack of experience combined with their rifles giving off a very visible black smoke led to a heavy casualties in the Battle of El Caney. After an encampment near Santiago de Cuba in which a large number of the soldiers became ill with disease - estimates are as high as 65% - the regiment returned home in August. Historians have noted that soldier demographics changed considerably from the Civil War to the Spanish American war as the smaller number of troops and the lack of a draft led to a more enthusiastic army with higher morale. The photographs in this group are interesting as a typological grouping of images of untrained soldiers and also for their historical value as most contain identifications to versos. The highlight of the group is forty-four uniformly mounted portraits of soldiers nearly all identified measuring 3 x 2 inches each. Other photographs include a large portrait of Captain Frederick E. Pierce with the blindstamp of Goldsmith Studio Springfield Massachusetts and a 3 x 3 inch square card of Capt. Pierce in Camp Turner. Also included are two slightly larger photographs on similar mounts. Overall an interesting group. Good condition overall with assorted chips and wear. unknown
