br. Da un continuo scambio tra le suggestioni di una teoria generale delle forme letterarie (o poetica) e i dati concreti di una tradizionale, e spesso penetrante, analisi critica nascono i saggi di Figure III. Di questa doppia anima l'autore è ben conscio; la raccolta si apre, infatti, col breve scritto su Critica e poetica, che è una riaffermazione della pari e complementare dignità di entrambe. Ad esso fa seguito una ridiscussione dei rapporti tra Poetica e storia, classico tema della possibilità di una storia letteraria, visto da una specola non italiana (ma con risultati che suonano conferma a quelli di scuola italiana). Di questa collaborazione tra poetica, nella specie narratologica, e critica, Genette dà subito prova affrontando la Recherche proustiana, prima sinteticamente, con un magistrale saggio sulla Metonimia in Proust; poi analiticamente, smontando i meccanismi narrativi dell'opera. La lezione di metodo che ne risulta ha così un merito in più: quello di dimostrarsi, fin dalla sua formulazione, utile alla comprensione di un testo straordinariamente complesso, dal quale è lecito estrarre conclusioni generali sui rapporti tra storia, narrazione e racconto.

Ma l'esperienza mostra che il mero dominio di questa tecnica può rivelarsi addirittura dannoso per l'oratore, che corre il rischio di vedersi sospettato di manipolazione. La retorica è un paradosso: quanto più la dominiamo, tanto più ci si rivolta contro. È vero? Dal punto di vista tecnico, sì; ma, fortunatamente, la retorica è più profonda: per convincere qualcuno bisogna prima entrare in contatto con lui, non soltanto col suo intelletto, ma anche - e fondamentalmente - con le sue emozioni, che ne rafforzano la libera decisione. Ma siccome il ricevente ha la sua sensibilità e non si lascia ingannare tanto facilmente, è fondamentale che l'emittente esamini le proprie intenzioni comunicative: quanto più esse sono sincere e rispettose, tanta più fiducia indurrà e, di conseguenza, tanto più efficace sarà la comunicazione. Nel presente libro si studia una retorica dei valori con un fondamento ecologico, basato sulla responsabilità e sulla solidarietà, in cui occupa un ruolo centrale la riflessione sulla qualità umana del relatore, perché soltanto una persona convincente saprà convincere con efficacia.

Les 33 p. de tables placées en fin donnent une liste précieuse des synonymes utilisés pour chaque entrée ("voleur, larron, fripon, filou") "Quoique l'intérêt pour les synonymes remonte à l'Antiquité, c'est l'abbé Gabriel Girard (1677-1748) posa les bases modernes de leur étude (...). Les 'Synonymes français' ne sont pas 'seulement' un dictionnaire: le titre l'affirmait avec orgueil : il s'agit de la 'justesse de la langue', de cette justesse qui 'convient par tout', qui 'plaît toujours' et qui 'plaît seule', alors que 'rien ne plaît sans elle' " (cf. J. Breuillard, ‘Les synonymes de l'Abbé Girard’ in ‘Dix-huitième siècle’, 2006/1, n° 38). Grammairien français, chapelain de la duchesse de Berry et secrétaire interprète du roi pour les langues slavonne et russe, l'auteur fut élu à l'Académie française en 1744. Très bel exemplaire.
