He was not only Trajan’s political advisor, but also provided us with an important theoretical study on the political rhetoric of the period: the different forms of government, the dialectic of monarchy and tyranny, social harmony, Greek loyalty to the Romans, and the position of the intellectual in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. This book examines the connections between rhetoric, sophistics, politics and ethics in one of Dion of Prusa’s most famous speeches. The historical background, the literary context and significant aspects of the reception of Dion’s ideas and suggestions are illuminated, and major modern scholarly opinions are discussed and often disproved. The author always keeps the analysis and various interpretations of the text in the central focus of a critical reading. This gives the work its interest for philologists and historians in the field of the history of ancient rhetoric and the second sophistic as well as of Graeco-Roman society in the first two centuries of our era.

Il Dialogo - le cui personae sono 'un Alemanno, un Italiano, un Francese, un Inglese, e uno Spagnolo' - è stampato da p. 32 alla fine. L'autore, classicista intransigente, aveva avviato alla fine del 1818 - insieme al nobile bergamasco Trussardo Calepio e a Bernardo Bellini - un periodico dal titolo 'Attaccabrighe, ossia classico-romanticomachia'. Legatura leggermente allentata; leggera brunitura al margine superiore del frontespizio. Per il resto ottimo esemplare.

Testatine e capilettera xilografici. Alcuni errori nella numerazione delle pagine, ma testo completo. Antica sigla manoscritta di appartenenza al taglio di testa. Nota d'appartenenza di mano antica al recto della prima carta bianca. Brevi note manoscritte da mano coeva al margine esterno di qualche pagina. Piccoli segni di tarlo, alcuni dei quali ben sistemati con carta giapponese da recente intervento di restauro, nel margine inferiore o in quello superiore di alcune pagine, sempre lontano dal testo. Alla carta con le pagine 349-350, reintegrato l'angolo inferiore esterno, con 5 lettere, che erano cadute, riscritte a matita ben imitando i caratteri del testo.
