Il De ratione dicendi (1532) di Juan Luis Vives è stato tradotto in spagnolo, inglese, tedesco, ma mai in italiano. Questa di Emilio Mattioli è la prima traduzione italiana. Non si tratta di un ricupero erudito, ma di un apporto concreto al progetto di rivalutazione dell'umanesimo dal punto di vista filosofico che Ernesto Grassi ha lasciato come sua eredità spirituale. L'introduzione di Emilio Hidalgo-Serna, uno dei maggiori conoscitori di Vives, chiarisce il significato filosofico della retorica dell'umanista spagnolo: "la sua filosofia del linguaggio merita di essere valorizzata come uno degli apporti più originali della sua opera al pensiero del secolo XVI. Vives sostiene l'efficacia del linguaggio originario per arrivare a rendere concettualmente ingegnose quelle relazioni e quei significati che rimangono inaccessibili ad una visione razionale". La retorica di Vives è, dunque, un testo profondamente innovativo, fortemente polemico nei confronti della tradizione scolastica e permeato della consapevolezza della sua novità. La originale concezione del linguaggio, colto nella concretezza delle lingue storiche, dà a Vives la capacità di affrontare problemi di teoria letteraria, valga per tutti l'esempio del problema della traduzione che l'umanista sviluppa in una tipologia singolarmente attuale. Complessivamente questo testo rappresenta, insieme al De disciplinis (1531) cui è strettamente connesso, un capitolo fondamentale in quella tradizione di pensiero che va dall'umanesimo italiano a Vico. Fuori dello scenario significativo del linguaggio storico è impossibile immaginare l'esistenza di un metodo fruttuoso ed inventivo di parlare, di sapere o di pensare. Nella lingua e nel linguaggio comune, nella parola metaforica e nella elocuzione retorica si radicano inevitabilmente la comunicazione, le arti del sermo, tutte le scienze, la nostra conoscenza e la riflessione filosofica. L'ontologia scolastica e il pensiero occidentale dimenticarono spesso la stretta correlazione tra il verbum e la res. In questa tradizionale amnesia gli umanisti individuarono la causa del travisamento del linguaggio originario e della decadenza della filosofia e delle discipline. La struttura astratta del discorso metafisico e della logica formale non riconosce i vincoli che uniscono gli individui con la società e con le loro incessanti necessità di significare e di rappresentare la realtà storica. Questa edizione e traduzione del De ratione dicendi (1532) offre ora al lettore italiano uno strumento rapido ed efficace per capire meglio la tradizione umanistica e l'attualità del pensiero di Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540). L'Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici organizzò a Napoli nel 1992 un Congresso Internazionale su Juan Luis Vives. Linguaggio, retorica e umanesimo filosofico. Else book is fine. ; Traditionally, Homer's epics have been the domain of scholars and students interested in ancient Greek poetry, and Aristotle's rhetorical theory has been the domain of those interested in ancient rhetoric. Rachel Ahern Knudsen believes that this academic distinction between poetry and rhetoric should be challenged. Based on a close analysis of persuasive speeches in the Iliad, Knudsen argues that Homeric poetry displays a systematic and technical concept of rhetoric and that many Iliadic speakers in fact employ the rhetorical techniques put forward by Aristotle. Rhetoric, in its earliest formulation in ancient Greece, was conceived as the power to change a listener’s actions or attitudes through words? Particularly through persuasive techniques and argumentation. Rhetoric was thus a "technical" discipline in the ancient Greek world, a craft ( technê) that was rule-governed, learned, and taught. This technical understanding of rhetoric can be traced back to the works of Plato and Aristotle, which provide the earliest formal explanations of rhetoric. But do such explanations constitute the true origins of rhetoric as an identifiable, systematic practice? If not, where does a technique-driven rhetoric first appear in literary and social history? Perhaps the answer is in Homeric epics. Homeric Speech and the Origins of Rhetoric demonstrates a remarkable congruence between the rhetorical techniques used by Iliadic speakers and those collected in Aristotle's seminal treatise on rhetoric. Knudsen's claim has implications for the fields of both Homeric poetry and the history of rhetoric. In the former field, it refines and extends previous scholarship on direct speech in Homer by identifying a new dimension within Homeric speech? Namely, the consistent deployment of well-defined rhetorical arguments and techniques. Edizione primottocentesca di quest'opera di retorica in due volumi pubblicata in edizione originale nel 1725 e poi piu' volte ristampata. L'autore e' il gesuita Gabriel Francois Le Jay (1657-1734), docente di retorica al collegio Louis Le Grand di Parigi dove insegno' al giovane Voltaire. Il primo volume di quest'opera e' dedicato alla retorica, il secondo alla poetica e contiene una sezione antologica di testi. Le Jay analizza anche la tragedia basandosi sulla Poetica di Aristotele, individuando in Corneille e Racine i due giganti del teatro tragico francese.
