‎The Bodrum Jewish Cemetery. With contributions of C. M. Kösemen.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In English. 118 p., ills. The Bodrum Jewish Cemetery. With contributions of C. M. Kösemen. Tombstones have many memories to share about the past. For these reasons, they must be made to speak, and their sayings must be carefully recorded¿". Known today mainly as a holiday destination, the Aegean town of Bodrum also hosted a small but important Jewish community in its past. This book catalogues the only remaining physical traces of this community in a small, neglected cemetery. Written by Siren Bora and translated and photographed by C. M. Kösemen, this study includes detailed images of all surviving tombstones in the Bodrum Jewish Cemetery, translations of every legible epitaph and provides useful background information on the history of Bodrum's Jews, Jewish funerary traditions, the details of epitaph texts and more. ‎The Greek occupation of Izmir and the protest meetings in Istanbul, 15 May 1919-13 January 1920.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 338 p. "When my son asks me for the first time 'who am I?' I will tell him like an angel crying from the heavens that he is a Turk with a great history. This voice, this varnished sound will stir up storms in his soul. As I sing him his lullaby with my sorrowful voice, I will seed these days in his soul. I will recite to him the songs of the great Turkish nation. I will embellish his cradle with these monuments of the architects. I will tell him about Fatihs and Yavuzesin stories. He will see Izmir in his handkerchief, in his book, his wallet and his fez. When I die, I will give him the golden enchased sword from my father and the folded flag as inheritance. The shackles put on by the winners are bound to be broken, because on that day, the seeds that I planted in his heart will bloom as flowers of freedom, and will erupt as a red rebellion. The ones who think of an eternal peace should not forget that the echo of the blow to us will definitely damage the peace of humanity in the future.". The occupation of Izmir by the Greek forces on 15 May 1919 was a decisive moment in history that sealed the fate of the Turkish nation. This started a chain of events that lead to the National Struggle and the foundation of the Turkish Republic. However, before the military aspect of the Struggle gained momentum, the Ottoman public showed their denouncement of the situation by organising protest gatherings. This book is concerned with six protest gatherings that took place in Istanbul between 18 May 1919 and 13 January 1920, using newspaper articles from Ikdâm, Ileri, Sabâh, Hadisât and Alemdâr as primary sources. ‎Light rubbing and edgewear to wraps. Else fine. ; This is the final volume of the monumental corpus of more than 12,000 ancient inscriptions from Athens and Attica dating from 403/2 BC to the 3rd cent. AD, edited by Johannes Kirchner between 1912 and 1940 (IG II/III2 , partes 1-4). These are supplemented here by the late-Roman and early-Christian inscriptions from the years between the destruction of Athens by the Heruli (267/68) and the end of the 6th cent. AD. Together with Corinth and Thessalonica, Athens has produced the largest number of Christian inscriptions from the Greek motherland. Particularly notable is the co-existence of pagan and Christian texts well into the 5th cent. The volume contains 422 inscriptions, which have been re-examined and edited, and illustrated on 44 plates. Besides decrees, honorary inscriptions, quotes from the Bible, acclamations, intercessions and blessings, the main contribution comes from 300 funerary inscriptions. Detailed indices provide easy access to the texts. ; Inscriptiones Graecae. Vol. II Et III Editio Altera Pars V; Vol. 2/3.5; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 218 pages‎

‎THE DAILY LIFE OF THE GREEK GODS‎

‎Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Despite the rousing stories of male heroism in battles, the Trojan War transcended the activities of its human participants. For Homer, it was the gods who conducted and accounted for what happened. In the first part of this book, the authors find in Homer s Iliad material for exploring the everyday life of the Greek gods: what their bodies were made of and how they were nourished, the organization of their society, and the sort of life they led both in Olympus and in the human world. The gods are divided in their human nature: at once a fantasized model of infinite joys and an edifying example of engagement in the world, they have loves, festivities, and quarrels. In the second part, the authors show how citizens carried on everyday relations with the gods and those who would become the Olympians, inviting them to reside with humans organized in cities. At the heart of rituals and of social life, the gods were omnipresent: in sacrifices, at meals, in political assemblies, in war, in sexuality. In brief, the authors show how the gods were indispensable to the everyday social organization of Greek cities. ; Mestizo Spaces; 0.71 x 8.5 x 5.56 Inches; 287 pages‎

‎The Glory of Hera : Greek Mythology and the Greek Family‎

‎The ancient Athenians were "quarrelsome as friends, treacherous as neighbors, brutal as masters, faithless as servants, shallow as lovers--all of which was in part redeemed by their intelligence and creativity." Thus writes Philip Slater in this classic work on narcissism and family relationships in fifth-century Athenian society. Exploring a rich corpus of Greek mythology and drama, he argues that the personalities and social behavior of the gods were neurotic, and that their neurotic conditions must have mirrored the family life of the people who perpetuated their myths. The author traces the issue of narcissism to mother-son relationships, focusing primarily on the literary representation of Hera and the male gods and showing how it related to devalued women raising boys in an ambitious society dominated by men. "The role of homosexuality in society, fatherless families, working mothers, women's status, and violence, male pride, and male bonding--all these find their place in Slater's analysis, so honestly and carefully addressed that we see our own societal dilemmas reflected in archaic mythic narratives all the more clearly." 513p. bibliography. index. ‎A couple of corners are lightly bumped. Former owner's bookplate to ffep (name has been deleted). Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing with chipping to one corner. ; Roman Theater & Society; 9.75 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 200 pages; William Slater's new volume Roman Theater and Society brings an important perspective to the much-maligned status of the Roman theater, which has only recently been reappraised and appreciated as uniquely Roman rather than criticized for not being Greek. From this point of embarkation, William Slater and the nine contributors discuss theater in Rome and the Greek east with a definition of performance incorporating not only stage performances but also dinnertime entertainment, sporting events, and political events. Contributors are T. D. Barnes, K. M. Coleman, J. C. Edmonson, E. R. Gebhard, J. R. Green, E. J. Jory, W. D. Lebek, and D. S. Potter. Individual chapters combine literary evidence with archaeological, thereby engendering a deeper appreciation for the social and political roles of Roman theater. It becomes clear that these roles were of great influence in giving voice to the popular demands of the average Roman. In examining the roles of theater the contributors turn to the players and audience themselves for deeper understanding.‎

‎Slatkin, Laura M.‎

‎THE POWER OF THETIS And Selected Essays‎

‎Laura Slatkin's influential and widely admired book, here published in a second edition together with six additional essays, explores the superficially minor role of Thetis in the Iliad. Highly charged allusions reverberate through the narrative and establish a constellation of themes that link the poem to other traditions. Slatkin uncovers alternative traditions about the power of Thetis and shows how an awareness of those myths brings a far greater understanding of Thetis's place in the thematic structure of the Iliad. The six additional essays included in this volume--some of them classics, some never before published--cover a broad range of topics in the study of the Greek Epic: the workings of genre in Hesiod and Homer; the poetics of exchange; and the nature of enmity and friendship. The volume also includes a study of the Hesiodic Catalog of Women and reflections on particular heroes, such as Diomedes and Odysseus. ; Hellenic Studies 16; 238 pages‎

‎THE GOVERNOR AND HIS SUBJECTS IN THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE‎

‎This book presents new insights into the dynamics of the relationship between governors and provincial subjects in the Later Roman Empire, with a focus on the provincial perspective. Based on literary, legal, epigraphic and artistic materials the author deals with questions such as how provincials communicated their needs to governors, how they expressed both their favorable and critical opinions of governors’ behavior, and how they rewarded ‘good’ governors. Provincial expectations, a continuous dialogue, interdependence, reciprocity, and ceremonial routine play key roles in this study that not only leads to a better understanding of Late Roman provincial administration, but also of the successful functioning of an empire as large as that of Rome. ; Mnemosyne, Supplements ; History and Archaeology of Classical Antiquity, 275; 220 pages‎
