Fakinos,Aris
The Marked Men
"At the height of the Greek Civil War,a lost nationalist army patrol seeks refuge in Doliani, a small village in the rugged Macedonian mountains, decimated by an endless stream of invading armies - Bulgarians,Italians,Germans, and finally their fellow Greeks. (it) is a pentrating indictment of the current regime in Greece as well, for many of those now in power appear in the novel. "in 1966, while embroiled in a political trial, Fakinos dramatically proved existence of a 'generals' plot' to establish a Greek military dictatorship by force. When the predicted coup d'etat occurred on April 21, 1967, he fled Greece with the unfinished manuscript of this book" Book

LATIN POETS AND ITALIAN GODS
Large closed tear to back panel of DJ (8cm). Now protected in mylar sleeve. Bottom corners slightly bumped. ; The Robson Classical Lectures; 256 pages; Based on Elaine Fantham's 2004 Robson lectures, Latin Poets and Italian Gods reconstructs the response of Roman poets in the late republic and Augustan age to the rural cults of central Italy. Study of Roman gods is often limited to the grand equivalents of the Olympian Greek deities such as Jupiter, Mars, and Juno. However, real-life Italians gave a lot of their affection and loyalty to humbler gods with no Greek equivalent: local nymphs who supplied healing waters, the great Tiber river and other lesser rivers, the lusty garden god Priapus, and more. Latin Poets and Italian Gods surveys the representation of these old country gods in poets from Plautus to Statius. Fantham offers historical and epigraphic evidence of worship offered to these colourful lesser spirits and reveals the emotional importance of local Italian deities to the sophisticated poets of the Augustan age.

Faraone, Christopher A.
ANCIENT GREEK LOVE MAGIC
Spine sunned and a bit discolored. ; The ancient Greeks commonly resorted to magic spells to attract and keep lovers--as numerous allusions in Greek literature and recently discovered "voodoo dolls," magical papyri, gemstones, and curse tablets attest. Surveying and analyzing these various texts and artifacts, Christopher Faraone reveals that gender is the crucial factor in understanding love spells. There are, he argues, two distinct types of love magic: the curselike charms used primarily by men to torture unwilling women with fiery and maddening passion until they surrender sexually; and the binding spells and debilitating potions generally used by women to sedate angry or philandering husbands and make them more affectionate. Faraone's lucid analysis of these spells also yields a number of insights about the construction of gender in antiquity, for example, the "femininity" of socially inferior males and the "maleness" of autonomous prostitutes. Most significantly, his findings challenge the widespread modern view that all Greek men considered women to be naturally lascivious. Faraone reveals the existence of an alternate male understanding of the female as "naturally" moderate and chaste, who uses love magic to pacify and control the "naturally" angry and passionate male. This fascinating study of magical practices and their implications for perceptions of male and female sexuality offers an unusual look at ancient Greek religion and society. ; 224 pages

VERGIL'S GEORGICS AND THE TRADITIONS OF ANCIENT EPIC The Art of Allusion in Literary History
Gift inscription from author to R. E. Fantham on ffep. Else book is fine. DJ has very light shelfwear with 1 tiny chip to one corner. ; In this important and original new book, Joseph Farrell argues that there is a detailed and extensive program of literary allusion in Vergil's Georgics, moving basically from Hesiod and Aratus in the first book, to Lucretius in the middle two, to Homer in the fourth. This program involves what he calls "analytic" allusion, namely a reconstruction or interpretation of the texts alluded to; and, he contends, the direction of the allusion, moving from Hesiod (and perhaps Alexandrian poetics) toward Homer and heroic epic, helps to clarify the development of Vergil's poetic career, which moves from the Callimacheanism of the Eclogues to the full-fledged epic of the Aeneid. Applying to the Georgics the full range of recent scholarly methodology, Farrell's pathbreaking book will be of great interest to all scholars and students of Vergil, classical literature, and literary allusion. ; 416 pages
