‎THE ANCIENT GREEKS A Critical History‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Small chip along foreedge. Minor edgewear. ; 1.46 x 9.2 x 5.98 Inches; 736 pages; An esteemed teacher offers a major reassessment of the history of Greece from prehistoric times to the rise of Alexander. This is a work of prodigious scholarship written in grand style. John Fine surveys the archaeological work that has revealed so much about the civilization of Crete and Mycenaean Greece, and discusses the age of colonization during which Greek colonies were established from the Crimea to the Nile, from the Caucasus to Spain. Analyzing social and economic developments, as well as foreign and inter-city affairs, he assesses the history, culture, and democracy of Athens, and Sparta's institutions and military exploits; recounts the Greeks' relations and then war with the Persian empire; details alliances, struggles, and the varying fortunes of the Greek city-states; and relates the rise of Macedon. Fine treats the Greeks' story in the context of events elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. Throughout he indicates the nature of the evidence on which our present knowledge is based, masterfully explaining the problems and pit-falls in interpreting ancient accounts. The Ancient Greeks is a splendid narrative history and a refreshing reinterpretation that will please students of ancient history, and everyone interested in early civilizations.‎

‎SLAVERY IN CLASSICAL GREECE‎

‎Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). ; Emphasizing the variety of systems of servitude, the author surveys the development of chattel slavery and then describes several cases in which entire communities were subjected. Next he considers the theories by which the Greeks justified the enslavement of particular peoples, and points out the absence of slavery in some Greek conceptions of utopia. He also discusses such topics as the condition of slaves in the various poleis, the role played by slaves in political life and in civic defense, the rarity of genuine slave revolts, and the means by which slaves and Helots sometimes reached accommodation with their masters. ; Classical World Series; 8.3 X 5.4 X 0.4 inches; 128 pages‎

‎COMPETITION IN THE ANCIENT WORLD‎

‎Very light creasing along top edge to DJ. ; Part I: Competition in comparative perspective: 1. Rivalry in history: an introduction (Hans van Wees) 2. Fame and prizes: competition and war in the Neo-Assyrian empire (Karen Radner) 3. Levels and strategies of competition in the Aztec Empire (Frances F. Berdan) Part II: Competition in Greece: 4. Ancient Greek competition - a modern construct? (Christoph Ulf) 5. Conflict and community in the Iliad (William Allan and Douglas Cairns) 6. Peer-polity interaction and cultural competition in sixth-century Greece (Sara Forsdyke) 7. Competitive delights: the social effects of the expanded programme of contests in post-Kleisthenic Athens (Nick Fisher) Part III: Competition in Rome: 8. Lotteries and elections: containing elite competition in Venice and Rome (Henrik Mouritsen) 9. Keeping up with the Joneses: competitive display within the Roman villa landscape (Hannah Platts) 10. Competitiveness and anti-competitiveness in Philostratus’ Lives of the Sophists (Jason Konig); 320 pages; Ancient peoples, like modern, spent much of their lives engaged in and thinking about competitions: both organised competitions with rules, audiences and winners, such as Olympic and gladiatorial games, and informal, indefinite, often violent, competition for fundamental goals such as power, wealth and honour. The varied papers in this book form a case for viewing competition for superiority as a major force in ancient history, including the earliest human societies and the Assyrian and Aztec empires. Papers on Greek history explore the idea of competitiveness as peculiarly Greek, the intense and complex quarrel at the heart of Homers Iliad, and the importance of formal competitions in the creation of new political and social identities in archaic Sicyon and classical Athens. Papers on the Roman world shed fresh light on Republican elections, through a telling parallel from renaissance Venice, on modes of competitive display of wealth and power evident in elite villas in Italy in the imperial period, and on the ambiguities in the competitive self-representations of athletes, sophists and emperors.‎

‎THE IMPERIAL CULT IN THE LATIN WEST Studies in the Ruler Cult of the Western Provinces of the Roman Empire. Volume III: Provincial Cult. Part 2: the Provincial Priesthood‎

‎Very slight bump to bottom back corner else Fine. ; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World, 146; Vol. 3.2; 0.9 x 9.7 x 6 Inches; 256 pages; This volume analyzes the priesthood of the provincial cult in every province of the Latin west where evidence has survived in the period from Augustus down to the mid third century. Particular attention is paid to the epigraphic record, notably the Testimony of honorific statues especially at provincial centres, but discussion also focusses on the origin and background of provincial priests, their office and duties, and their careers both before and after holding provincial office. Of special interest are the sixteen tables that list the main facts preserved by the epigraphic record, also a concluding overview that summarizes the principal features of the institution including the office of priestess and the role of administrative officials. Some fifty plates illustrate the text.‎

‎ANNAEANA TRAGICA Notes On the Text of Seneca's Tragedies‎

‎This volume is a companion to the author's new Loeb edition of Seneca's tragedies (vol. 1, 2002; vol. 2, 2004). It offers reasons for his editorial choices, and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. Hercules Oetanus and Octavia, now generally regarded as imitations of Senecan drama, are both included. The volume is intended to be read alongside Otto Zwierlein's Kritische Kommentar, published in 1986. In the intervening years there has been much new work pertaining to Seneca's text, including full-scale editions with commentary on individual plays, such as Keulen's Troades, Töchterle's Oedipus and Ferri's Octavia. Annaeana Tragica seeks to supplement and advance Zwierlein's work in the light of this new material. An appendix reviews the scholarly controversy concerning the anapaestic odes of these plays, and offers fresh evidence relevant to the issue. ; Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 293 pages‎
