THE GREEK WAY OF LIFE From Conception to Old Age
Creasing to spine and front wrap. Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). Pen markings to a few pages with notes in ink to rear endpapers. ; 0.75 x 8.75 x 5.75 Inches; 376 pages; Garland's book is a survey of the major life experiences which constituted the social reality of classical Greece. The method of analysis is dense description assembled mostly from classical literary and philosophic sources and broken down into the general topics of conception and pregnancy, birth, childhood, coming of age, early adulthood, and elders and the elderly. What emerges is a conception of the human being as a social animal par excellence whose nature was largely realized in the attainment of paradigmatic social roles: military service for men and childbearing for women. Among the subtopics are Greek medical ideas, the roles of women and children, marriage, care of the elderly, and the role of religious ideas.

TRADE AND FAMINE IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY
Gift inscription to titlepage from editor (Peter Garnsey). Light knock to base of spine. Corners have light creasing. Mild shelfwear. ; A theme of the volume is that a combination of natural and artificial shortages made inevitable the bulk movement of staples between regions in all periods of antiquity. Novel contributions are offered in addition in relation to the cost of shipping, the extent of long-distance trade in wine, the relative demand for wheat and barley, the incidence and gravity of food crises, the efficiency of famine-relief measures and the part played by food shortages in the collapse of the late Roman frontier system. ; Cambridge Philological Society Supplementary Vol 8; 126 pages; Signed by Editor

SEXUAL CULTURE IN ANCIENT GREECE
Pencilling and a few notes in pencil by Jenifer Neils. DJ has long scratch to front panel and chipping to extremities. Includes letter from Wolfgang Haase tipped in with handwriting by him requesting a book review from Neils. ; Erotic sensibility pervaded the art, literature, and social mores of the ancient Greeks. Early religious figurines emphasize sexual features, and written documents confirm that the people worshiped deities with strong sexual characteristics. Out of this background came a distinctively Greek sexual culture--guilt-free, graphically frank, and uninhibited by taboos that became entrenched in the Middle Ages. Illustrated with art from the earliest agricultural periods as well as from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman eras, SEXUAL CULTURE OF ANCIENT GREECE presents nine successive stages of Greek sexual culture. Daniel H. Garrison uses well-known passages from Biblical, Near Eastern, and Greek literature to show the centrality of sexual culture in the civilizations of the area, particularly as they reflect the traditions passed on to the Western world. The only comprehensive overview of Greek sexual culture, this book is a valuable guide to the origins of our complex attitudes regarding marriage, the rights of women, homosexuality, and the role of eroticism in art, religion, ethics, and literature. ; Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture; 358 pages

AESCHYLUS' SUPPLICES Play and Trilogy
Very light foxing to textblock else Fine. ; 288 pages; This remains the major book on Aeschylus' Supplices, its dating and the trilogy to which it belonged. Its first appearance, in 1969, was a response to the publication of a papyrus fragment from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt, which indicated a late production date (the 460s BC) for Aeschylus' play. This upset the previous consensus that it was the earliest Greek tragedy to survive: there was, Garvie argued, no longer good reason to suppose that the play belonged to an early stage in its author's development. The book also examines the evidence for reconstruction of the other, lost plays of the trilogy. Garvie remains convinced that, even without the additional testimony of the papyrus, all the internal from the text of the play points to the 460s, though some have tried to pull it back to the 470s because it feels like an early play. Some of the salutary lessons to be drawn from the discovery of the papyrus have still to be learnt.
