‎ROMAN SATIRE‎

‎Staining to last couple of blank pages (does not affect text). Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (Robert Brown). Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Else book is VG. ; 289 pages; This study appraises the work of all the Roman satirists, from the 2nd century BC, to the end of the reign of Hadrian in AD 138. The satirists' work is shown to reflect the constantly changing society in which they lived, and its topics range from the morally earnest to the bawdy. Certain themes are examined which are common to some degree to all the satirists -- autobiographical revelation, personal invective, political and ethical judgements and literary criticism. The book provides an exposition of the tradition of verse satire from Lucilius through Horace and Persius to Juvenal, with an assessment of the structure and distinctive literary quality of each satire. It discusses satire in the Menippean tradition, a composite form of prose and verse which was used first by Varro, then by Petronius and by Seneca in his "Apocolocyntosis", a comical and malicious satire on the deification of the emperor Claudius.‎

‎GREEK AND LATIN LITERATURE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE From Augustus to Justinian‎

‎Upper corners lightly bumped. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Minor shelfwear to book. Some creasing to DJ with a bit of staining to rear wrap. ; Professor Dihle sees the Greek and Latin literature between the 1st century B. C. And the 6th century A. D. As an organic progression. He builds on Schlegel's observation that art, customs and political life in classical antiquity are inextricably entwined and therefore should not be examined separately. Dihle does not simply consider narrowly defined `literature', but all works of cultural socio-historical significance, including Jewish and Christian literature, philosophy and science. Despite this, major authors like Seneca, Tacitus and Plotinus are considered individually. This work is an authoritative yet personal presentation of seven hundred years of literature. ; 656 pages‎

‎EXITS AND ENTRANCES IN MENANDER‎

‎Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; Most studies of Menander's comedies concentrate on the playwright's talent for characterization and plot construction while ignoring his artful use of theatrical conventions to create live theater. This book, based on close readings of the surviving texts, is the first to examine systematically the techniques of stagecraft--particularly stage movement--employed by the playwright in his effort to work successfully within theatrical limits. ; Oxford Classical and Philosophical Monographs; 144 pages‎

‎LINGUISTICS AND FORMULAS IN HOMER Scalarity and Description of the Particle Per‎

‎Edgewear to corners and spine ends. Spine a bit sunned. ; The purpose of this study is to provide a description of the Greek particle per as it occurs in the text of Homer. As such it is a contribution to the study of Ancient Greek in general and of the Greek' particles in particular. But the work transgresses the boundaries of Greek linguistics' proper. First, the discussion of per as a scalar article contributes to the discussion of scalar phenomena in general. Second, as a description of a linguistic feature in the Iliad and Odyssey, metrical texts of oral-formulaic origin, this study is also an essay in the relation between linguistics on the one hand and formulas and metre on the other. ; 318 pages‎

‎LUCRETIUS: DE RERUM NATURA Book III‎

‎Very light to book else fine. DJ has minor shelfwear with 1 small tear and light edgewear. DJ is price-clipped. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 272 pages; The De Rerum Natura of Lucretius is a sustained and impassioned protest against religious superstition and irrationality. The poem takes the form of a detailed exposition of Epicurean physical theory - an extreme materialism designed to remove and discredit popular fears of the gods, death and an afterlife. Book III is generally accepted to be the finest in the whole poem; Lucretius argues there that the soul is as mortal as the body and shows that human response to the fact of mortality and death can be at once rational, dignified and liberating. Professor Kenney's commentary is the first to give proper critical emphasis to the techniques and intentions of Lucretius' poetry; it can be read with profit by all students of Latin from senior school level upwards.‎

‎THE CROWD IN ROME IN THE LATE REPUBLIC‎

‎Minor shelfwear book is fine. DJ has 3 small holes to foreedges. ; The Crowd in Rome in the Late Republic explores the consequences of a democracy in which public office could only be gained by direct election by the people. And while the Senate could indeed debate public matters, advise other officeholders, and make some administrative decisions, it could not legislate. An officeholder who wanted to pass a law had to step out of the Senate-house and propose it to the people in the Forum. In an expansion and revision of his Thomas Spencer Jerome lectures, Fergus Millar explores the development of the Roman Republic, which by its final years had come to cover most of Italy. To exercise their rights, voters had to come to Rome (or to live in or near the city as about one third of them did) and to meet in the Forum. Millar takes the period from 80 to 50 B. C. , the dictatorship of Sulla to Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon, and shows how crowd politics was central to the great changes that took place year after year. The volume will interest general readers, as well as students of politics and Roman history. Technical terms are explained, and foreign words are kept to a minimum. ; Thomas Spencer Jerome Lectures; 1.06 x 9.32 x 6.34 Inches; 256 pages‎
