Patterson, Cynthia B.
THE FAMILY IN GREEK HISTORY
Light pencilling to last 2 pages. Else very minor shelfwear. ; 286 pages; The family, Cynthia Patterson demonstrates, played a key role in the political changes that mark the history of ancient Greece. From the archaic society portrayed in Homer and Hesiod to the Hellenistic age, the private world of the family and household was integral with and essential to the civic realm. Early Greek society was rooted not in clans but in individual households, and a man's or woman's place in the larger community was determined by relationships within those households. The development of the city-state did not result in loss of the family's power and authority, Patterson argues; rather, the protection of household relationships was an important element of early public law. The interaction of civic and family concerns in classical Athens is neatly articulated by the examples of marriage and adultery laws. In law courts and in theater performances, violation of marital relationships was presented as a public danger, the adulterer as a sexual thief. This is an understanding that fits the Athenian concept of the city as the highest form of family. The suppression of the cities with the ascendancy of Alexander's empire led to a new resolution of the relationship between public and private authority: the concept of a community of households, which is clearly exemplified in Menander's plays. Undercutting common interpretations of Greek experience as evolving from clan to patriarchal state, Patterson's insightful analysis sheds new light on the role of men and women in Greek culture.

ROMAN ELOQUENCE Rhetoric in Society and Literature
Pencilling and underlining to a few pages. ; 1.02 x 8.43 x 5.59 Inches; 268 pages; Rhetoric is once again becoming valued as an essential element in the exploration of the ancient world. This volume is part of a general renaissance in the study of rhetoric and draws together established and newer scholars in the field to produce a probing and innovative analysis of the role played by rhetoric in Roman culture. Utilizing a variety of critical approaches and methodologies, the contributors examine not only the role of rhetoric in Roman society but also the relationship between rhetoric and Rome's major literary genres. Roman Eloquence emphasizes the theory and practice of rhetoric in a variety of social, political and literary contexts, and reveals the important role played by rhetoric in the formation of the various genres of literatures.

SEEING SENECA WHOLE Perspectives on Philosophy, Poetry and Politics
Gift inscription from Volk to R. E. Fantham in pencil to titlepage. Pencil marginalia to a few pages. Creasing along upper edge of DJ. DJ spine a bit sunned. '2006' written in pen to front panel of DJ. ; Columbia Studies in the Classical Tradition; 222 pages; This volume contains ten essays by an international group of scholars on various aspects of the work of L. Annaeus Seneca the Younger, the famous (some would say, notorious) Roman playwright, philosopher, and politician of the Claudian and Neronian periods. Approaching Seneca from a number of different angles, the authors endeavor both to illuminate individual aspects of the writer's enormous output and to discern common themes among the many different genres practiced by Seneca. Given its interdisciplinary approach, the collection is of interest to classicists, historians, and historians of philosophy alike.

PARTY POLITICS IN THE AGE OF CAESAR
Some rubbing and creasing to wraps. Light pen marginalia to about 10 pages. General shelfwear. ; Later reprint of 1949 edition. ; Sather Classical Lectures 22; 255 pages; The advice given to Cicero by his astute, campaign-conscious brother to prepare him for the consular elections of 64 B. C. , has a curiously modern ring: "Avoid taking a definite stand on great public issues either in the Senate or before the people. Bend your energies towards making friends of key-men in all classes of voters. " Party Politics in the Age of Caesar is a shrewd commentary on this text, designed to clarify the true meaning in Roman political life of such terms as "party" and "faction. " Taylor brilliantly explains the mechanics of Roman politics as she discusses the relations of nobles and their clients, the manipulation of the state religion for political expedience, and the practical means of delivering the vote.

SUETONIUS The Scholar and His Caesars
Coloured pencil marginalia and a few notes to some pages. Creasing to spine. Some rubbing to wraps. Scholar's small bookplate to ffep (R. E. This biography sets the historian's career and his method of dealing with his subject matter in the context of Roman society in the early Empire, and draws a picture of the coherence of Suetonius's life, appointments, scholarship and literary activities. Suetonius is presented as a man of learning, rather than as a failed narrative historian. This portrait takes account of recent evidence concerning his life and seeks to clarify the character of "The Lives of the Caesars" as a description of emperors and Roman imperial society by a scholarly biographer who himself was in the service of a scholarly Caesar - the Emperor Hadrian. ; Classical Life & Letters; 216 pages
