Gage, Nicholas;
Greece: Land of Light
"Greece is a legendary destination, and anyone who has once fallen under its spell dreams of returning again and again. GREECE: LAND OF LIGHT captures the essence of Greece, its striking sea and landscape, its peoples, its culture and history, and its ancient monuments.In the stark light of the Greek sun, colors become so pure and clear that they are almost audible. From the tip of the Peloponnese to the remote mountain villages of the far north to the islands of the Aegean, Brukoffs brilliant color images and Gage's evocative words delineate the heart of Greece. Included are the great classical ruins, Byzantine monasteries, colorful fishing villages, chairs at outdoor tavernas, octopus drying in the sun like laundry, and the ubiquitous catsthe vivid details that each traveler takes home as a memory." Gages insightful essays on the turbulent history of Greece, its myths and beliefs, life in the villages, the age-old wisdom and spirit of the Greek people, and above all, Greeces unearthly, spiritual, almost holy light are a passionate tribute to an extraordinary country.160p. plates (col) index Book

British policy towards the change of dynasty in Greece, 1862-1863
Based on a thesis the author produced while at Oxford University this book discusses both the internal and international difficulties created by the forced abdication of King Otto and the ensuing negotiations in finding a possibly acceptable successor amongst the scions of some aspiring royal families of Europe.This analysis of British involvement also includes the transfer of the Ionian Islands to Greece. Eventually the " Greeks and Great Powers winnowed their choice to William of Denmark.Aged only 17, he was elected King of the Hellenes on 30 March1863 by the Greek National Assembly under the name of George I" 194p,. bibliography, index. Inscription on ffep." To Jack - El. Prevelakis". However the pages are uncut and it remains unread, but the paper covers show some wear and tear Book
